  1. Black max is very good. Walmart sells them for about 50$. I'd suggest buying 150 yards of 30 or 50lb braid to go with it.
  2. I have an Abu Garcia revo sx and a shimano chronarch. I love them both and they were within 30$ of each other. The revo casts farther and has twice the drag of the shimano and is just as smooth, but the shimano is a bit smaller profile and more comfortable. I have the shimano paired to a st croix triumph and the Abu is paired with a Berkeley lightening rod.
  3. I use green power pro. I've used it in 30# and 50#. I've used red but don't like how i notice it bleeding color more and having a white chronarch and pink water all over it drives me nuts... Good braid though.
  4. Hey guys I need your professional opinions. Right now I have these two combos I use mostly. -6' MH Berkeley lightening rod -revo sx 6.4:1 -50lb power pro -6'6" MH st croix triumph - shimano chronarch e 6.5:1 -30lb power pro I fish senkos, topwater hollow body frogs, spinnerbaits, sometimes buzzbaits, rapalas and poppers. Would you keep these combos as is or swap rods and reels around? I've always wondered whether they were mated correctly. What would you guys have them setup as. And what do you think each one would excel at?
  5. I use 30 on my chronarch and 50 on my old accurist pt and my my revo sx, all green power pro.
  6. Yeah I can service them myself I just hate doing it because I'm such a perfectionist and it takes forever.
  7. I usually use a 1 piece 6' or 6'6" MH
  8. Hey guys. I have a shimano chronarch 201e7 and an Abu Garcia revo sx. I got the revo in April and have fished it on and off. The chronarch I've had almost a year and fish a lot. It's never been dropped in the water. I keep it very clean, blow water off it whenever it gets soaked and spray it down an clean it every few outings. I've taken a few bait casters down in my time but it was years and years later. Never had a problem. But the shimano and revo were somewhat expensive To me so I'd like to keep them in tip top shape. I oil the worm drive on the shimano and wherever else they recommend lightly as wel as the abu. I'd rather use my reels then take them apart but if need be I will. Each reel is unique so this is why I ask about these two reels. I have quantum hot sauce to use if need be.
  9. I've never fished saltwater lol, just always have used overkill. I fish a lot of swampy areas and lillypads have taken my lures before so I beefed my stuff up. I never used snaps until I used braid, it's expensive to keep cutting, a pain to cut and only a few knots work with it. I feel like using 30lb braid an a 10lb mono leader defeats the purpose of having the braid. I used straight braid only because I found a way that works and won't slip.
  10. Adjust the drag to 1/4 of your line weight. For example 40lb braid will be 10 lbs of drag. As far as the knot, try a normal Albright it should serve fine and will be thinner. Just keep in mind the weak link will then be your mono leader unless it is of similar size. I run 30 and 50 lb braid straight on my spools with no backing, just a thin strip of tape for grip. Then cut the swivel off a snap swivel and tie the snap straight to braid. That way I get quick lure changes and braid all the way.
  11. I love my revo sx. I have a second gen. Bought my chronarch around the same time. Same year manufactured. I have to say my revo casts light years ahead of my chronarch but not as smooth, light or low profile. Drag beats the shimano out of the water. Backlashes aren't really an issue. If I know I'm fishin somewhere that I need extra reach I'll bring the sx, if it's somewhere tight I'll bring the chronarch. But just for pure power and casting distance the sx outmatched the shimano every time.
  12. Hey guys. I personally don't need a new baitcaster, my shimano, Abu and quantum are still going strong. This is for my brother. He has castes my older quantum a few times quite a while back, but I want to get him his own. I don't know if he will take to it or not, he expresses interest but I don't want to shell out a ton of cash. So what's a good but inexpensive setup? Left handed, 6 foot rod.
  13. I say do it yourself. You'll never learn if you send it in. .RM. has a point though, if you have any doubt in your mechanical ability, send it in. Otherwise dive in. The first baitcaster i worked on had no schematics to be found online and it came to me as is, no box or anything. So i just laid out all the parts in order from outside to inside and left to right as i took them apart so i could visually put together in my head where they would go, including screws. I've done some daiwa, shimano and quantum, all easy. Just don't tear the entire thing down at once. Work on a section or side at a time. As others have said, grease on gears, oil on bearings. I grease my worm gear, others oil. Oil washes away faster so i lightly grease. Also, a drop of oil per handle paddle makes it smoother. Depending on the drag (do some research) it may be a dry system, or it may need some oil or grease depending.
  14. Try a normal Albright. It's a bit thinner because you don't double wrap the knot.
  15. No problem. Glad I could help! Always remember when you're going to leave the reel for more than a day or so back the drag off. You can also back the weights off if You have the kind you switch off and also the spool tension knob if storing for a long time.
  16. No. Since the drag is backed all the way off there is no pressure which explains why the spool won't spin. As far as the drag being stuck, try holding the handle an turning the star drag also.
  17. Yeah I've heard and seen that too much oil can be a bad thing. I was just wondering if there are any areas I have to keep close attention to more often than others
  18. Powerpro GREEN or white. The red I find makes a mess but it's just as strong.
  19. I actually had no backlash issues at all the first time out with my new sx. I just adjusted the spool tension knob so it fell fast but not to the point where it peeled all the line off and kept the brakes off.
  20. What points, on say a chronarch and revo sx, get oiled often? And how often do they get oiled? What warrants a full strip down and cleaning? I used my quantum for 9 years on and off before I stripped it and cleaned it. But having two new expensive reels (to me anyways) I'd like to take care of em.
  21. I just recently became familiar with falcon rods. I saw one in Walmart and thought it was an amazing rod. Came home to see what the prices were like and holy crap.
  22. Is it expensive? I wouldn't mind sending in my shimano chronarch 201e6 and my Abu Garcia ambassadeur revo after this seasons end.
  23. John, do you cast with your left hand though? I too feel the same way. I won't buy righty reels though.
  24. Anything cheaper. I more so want decent looking handles and knobs. Maybe some bearing upgrades. I don't so much care about the drag. Just want to make it look unique. The shimano and revo are my main goals.
