Any reel can benefit form a thorough cleaning and proper lubrication. Many are over lubed from the factory. If evening out the brakes and cleaning don't do it, definitely get a replacement. A Curado that's working up to potential is a quality reel.

I do a lot of wading and use neoprene with wading shoes.When the weather heats up I pair my wading shoes with a pair of shorts. I would add wearing a PFD to the other good safety advice given already. Give wading a try especially in the smallie creeks!

shackman, Based only on the info you have provided, you might start at the spool and work outward looking at the supporting parts that might allow the pinion gear to move slightly out of alignment.

Do you have more detail on the model? The Capricorn schematics I have are for spinning reels and can't find it on Daiwa's site either. If you're sure you don't have them mixed up, make sure you're putting it straight in. Did it lift out easily?

What make reel do have? There be some swap-out options but there isn't a lot of room to play with on the brakes.

It depends on the circumstance. Some handles have more bearings, are different lengths and materials which may trim weight or provide a smoother feel. Knobs can be of other material or smooth vs. textured. Some changes are for personal preference alone.

Some carbon washers come with dry lube, but if you're satisfied with the performance of the drag there's no harm in a light coat of good drag grease.

A Tennessee handle would save the weight of a reel seat and possibly some grip material weight if made from shrink tubing, tape etc. As far as moving reel placement, there is some flexibility but guide size and placement and reel spool size would dictate a range and placement outside that range may affect casting. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see the TN handle come back into style.

It's true that there is no written standard for rod power or action. I'd look more at the designated lure rating and as stated, you can experiment on either end of the weight range with good results. You can check the action or "speed" by flexing the tip. A fast action will bend into the first 1/4 of the rod, a med about 1/2 way.
