  1. I only have chest waders, all the waist waders I have used were inadequate for where I was going, and the temperatures I wade in. Chest waders are warmer, so if you use them primarily during the warm season, then they would be hotter. If I get too hot, I just roll down the waders over the wader belt, so yeah. I think it would be a good idea to prepare for the worst, and pull the trigger on chest waders. The front pockets and handwarmer slots are too handy to give up
  2. Its a tough world out there for us. My one and only LH bc reel broke 3 months ago at the beginning of the spring summer bass season, so I've had to relearn how to fish with RH reels. Now, I have no preference for baitcasters, so thats nice and all! But if I want a LH, to the internet I go
  3. I primarily fish braid with a 3-8 foot leader of fluorocarbon. I never use a swivel, unless it is absolutely necessary for line twist. I don't like how swivels effect my rate of fall and they can catch on grass, rocks, etc. I am primarily a slack-line line watcher, and with braid (zero slack-line sensitivity) I need as much direct connection and the least amount of factors affecting the rate of fall and movement of the line as possible.
  4. Hello! I'm a Warren County guy over here, going to college in South Central PA so those are the two places I cover. SC PA sucks for bass fishing, so I love it when I'm home for getting my line wet, much more bass and fishing spots!
  5. For el cheapo, I just use heavy braid and tie it to the butt of the rod and the other end to somewhere convenient on the kayak, or a carabiner that i can clip onto parts of my kayak if it gets too annoying. Although recently I have been living life dangerously and haven't leashed at all!
  6. I think its more of a tale of caution. Taking the slime coat off will only make the fish more vulnerable to infections and disease, not give it diseases spontaneously. So if anything it just increases the risk. Plus, handling the fish quickly and gently may not remove the slime coat entirely.
  7. I primarily fish alone. I enjoy the time to myself, and I tend to want to go to areas of the lake/pond/river that are difficult to get to, so that really shrinks the pool of people that I can bring along with me. I like fishing alone, because I get time and privacy to myself, but I also like sharing the experience with someone every now and then. My old fishing buddy has been straying from fishing a bit, and now doesn't make time to get up at 4am to go anymore, or go out till sunset. Only been out on the water with another person half a dozen times this year, and its probably going to stay that way. I don't know of any other fisherman my age who takes it as seriously as I do. I would like to go fishing with someone else some more, but alot of the older guys in my area dismiss us young fellas.
  8. Thanks everyone for their help and assurance! I have taken it apart again and currently degreasing, with assembly later today in mind. Sucks to hear that the 2 speed is a crap reel, its such an interesting design and thought. I like the idea of pressure changing gear shifts, but I guess in practice its not very viable. I'll heed your warnings and crank the shift knob to the winch side, I prefer the slow crank. For the play in the handle, I think I'm just used to anti-reverse bearings on the drive-shaft. The fact that the dog-tooth gear allows for a little play in the handle is just something I'm going to have to get used too. And by play, I mean that I can move the handle backwards around half a radian while it is engaged. Just something I'm gonna have to deal with.
  9. I could definitely see that being the problem, that was honestly one of my first thoughts that the clutch was somehow not engaging all the way. So if the issue lies with the spring plate, could i manage to bend the spring arms on the spring plate and see if that a quick fix, or should I not even bother? It might take a bit to get the part so it would be a fix till then. Thanks for all your input thus far!
  10. So I managed to fix the auto-shift and changing between the two gear ratios, but the other problems are still prevalent. I would prefer to do this myself instead of sending it away until I've exhausted all of my resources.
  11. Hello! So I have an Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5500 c3 2 speed that I have had since I was younger. When I was younger I did take it apart a few times, so I may have lost a piece or two, but in general the reel works. Except! There are 3 problems with the reel that I would like fixed but I can't figure out what is wrong. I have taken it apart a few times and assembled to spec but it still doesn't perform ideally. First, the over-spin problem. If I spin the handle quickly while the reel is engaged, the spool will spin like normal. But if I suddenly stop cranking the handle, then the reel will continue to spin for half a second and make a clicking noise, as if the spool is spinning over the "clutch" that engages/disengages when you turn the handle/push the button. Second, the dog-tooth gear works fine, but the play in the handle is still a little more significant than I would like. Is there anything I can do about that? And lastly, the 2 speed shifting doesn't appear to be working anymore. Is there a more detailed explanation on how it works somewhere online? I would love to learn how the mechanics of it work coming from someone who knows more than me about it! Any response will help, and I'll do what I can to answer any questions that would help lead to the answer! Thank you!
  12. I always set the hook about half a second after i feel the thump, it gives me the security that the fish is definiately "mouthing" it. Sometimes it will be a 3 thump pick up. The first thump is the fish picking it up, the second thump is the fish turning away, and the third thump is the fish spitting it out. So you want to make sure you set before the third thump!
