  1. If you are heading down to choke and want a little power plant fishing then you should hit up Calaveras or Braunig lake south side san antonio. Its state park, but there is not much action on the shore its on open water where the magic happens you can catch cats, bass, and some reds =) good luck wherever you go.
  2. ... well college is here and i recently moved to U.T.S.A. *go roadrunners* so finally im on the right forum haha had to let the saltwater go *saddest thing ever* moving onto freshwater. I know there is calaveras lake and braunig lake but yeah im totally new here i went out and bought some new lures couple spro frogs, every kind of rage tail, rattle traps, some rapalas, lighter action rods then my sturdy stick. So, starting new on these lake and surrounding lakes, rivers, any help will be greatly appreciated.
  3. I do actually =) when me and my freinds hit the water early enough ill pull out the lures never got a flounder though =/ dont seem to be very many this season havent caught one yet =/. Reds and trout however i catch a lot on beetle spins and gulp shrimp. Dead shrimp and cut bait is my choice though =)
  4. thats a bull red =)
  5. No problem your not alone my brother in law called it the same thing had hes been fishing the good part of 30 years in these waters lol
  6. Thats pretty crazy never had anythign like that happen =/ you call the company or something or was it a fish you caught?
  7. awesome thanks a lot =)
  8. Thanks! =D so whats up with these fish? anything special?
  9. I looked up rockfish and dogfish and non of the pictures look like what i caught. They all look tooo much like fish (weird?) what we caught looks more like a angler and has small eyes not big and round like the rockfish
  10. So my friend was fishing with me today and he hooked up with this weird fish thing that ive only seen dead on the shore once. Its about 4 feet of saltwater inshore wading were not in the gulf just like a inlet kind of. Looks a lot like a ling cod or monkfish but im pretty sure those arent it. its brown no scales wide mouth that can swollow good sized fish and has a set of teeth that are a little back in the mouth before the gills after the lips. any idea?
  11. well i just got back from a trip of fishing and i was catching decent not much trout just drum and few reds. Half way through i remembered about trout eating more suspended and thinking about it i realized its true catching trout always on the top leader never the bottom so i cut the bottom of a float off and slid it onto the top leader (slot? hook holder? idk you understand i hope) well i then crimped it in place and gave it a shot and my numbers of trout and red shot up! no joke i used my dad brother in law and uncle as a independent variable in this experiment and they were just not catching trout when i was reeling them in! Got going good since the bottom rig was catching drum and the suspending hook was catching trout pulled in 4 doubles (1 with a trout and drum, 3 with red and drum) all keepers good day of fishing great find =) just a tip try it lemme know how it goes!
  12. ...so in the past couple of years ive been saltwater fishing ive seen the same old set up of leaders. Slightly modified but same. Mono filament, braid, steel, cable, single hooked, double hooked, all with the extra clip for a weight. So my question is, are their any other types of leaders or set ups that you all use for saltwater fishing and im talking about hook up some shrimp throw it out and grill up some fajitas until you see the rod holder tilt and the tip of the rod kiss the water.
  13. well if i had to make a list of biggest croakers i have caught it would be like... 1. the 30 inch beast 2. 7 inches 3-5. 5 inches
  14. Seriously? I catch tons never thought of cooking them though! How do you like to cook it?
  15. "A big croaker is a great fight" Agreed! even small ones have me thinking that they are keeper drum or reds it was a good one =)
  16. ...went fishing out at our favorite wading spot on sunday morning. Wasnt catching much just a few 12-16 inch reds and undersize drum. Baited a new shrimp threw out and BAM! my reel was screaming and i was just about to crap my pants. Had a good fight for about 10 min didnt wanna lose it till i could finally see it on the top looked like a big red. I got it closer and in the net when i found out it was a 30 inch atlantic croaker! I showed my friends i was fishing with saying "This is a monster croaker i didnt know they got that big!" and of course the original "This might be a state record!" we were only joking though as i though the record would be a huge 50 inch plus croaker caught in the open water not a bay. So i released it and it came to mind as i was on the computer to look up the state record and from what i found the "World Record" was 28 inches and about 5.8 pounds....*sigh* :'(
  17. The fish werent biting they were nibbling which made it a little hard to set the hook. Compared to my make shift surf rod it ran a little too smooth. It was windy so i was using the weight to have tension so i can feel the bites but it worked so well that with the sturdy stick it would just pull in the weight no biggie just used bigger weights. The line was great actually did bust though i got hung up on one of those fossil rocks couldn't power through. Wont know how well it runs till the next time after its been through saltwater hell but initially i liked it =) might try on a longer rod though sturdy sticks seem to be for more of the "grab bait and haul ***" kind of fish were they set the hook on themselves.
  18. The water i fish is full of fossils from ancient worms that use to dwell here so the only way you can fish is with a float but its usually too windy to use one impo. The steel leader and heavy line is just so when i get caught on one of these fossils i can just power my way through it. Also with a 20# test they break really easy when im trying to throw over the rows of weeds that covers most of my area due to the weight that i have on the leader. id just rather be safe then even having losing leaders and losing fish on my mind. Use to happen a lot and im just skittish of the idea.
  19. good plan going out tomorrow =) expect a review at about 10 =)
  20. A Shakespeare sturdy stick, and alpha 50 fishing reel for my birthday from my best friend and fishing pal =) put on a 65lbs spiderwire (stealth)? braid on it with a steel leader (nothing but bay fishing over here) what yall think =) cant wait to take it on the water.
  21. Same can be said for tennis ive been ranked top 3 and am number 2 in the state for 1A highschools and have taken down the top ranks from 5A's and 4A's (bigger schools). Played everyday since age 14 (turned 18 today) and i still have to do a tryout tournament for U.T.S.A. (division 1) and even if i win i am not guaranteed a spot on the team 347 kids tryed only 32 got into the tournament and nobody may be put on the team of 8. The stats are crazy you have a better chance at winning the lotto (not really but ya get the point). Just keep trying and dont give up =D thats all ya can doo!
