I have been an avid user of PLINE CXX this year as well as PLINE CX. Both are great lines, but lately with all the threads about Yo Zuri Hybrid, I decided to give it a try when I saw a spool of 12# Camo Green in the bargan bin at Gander Mountain for $4. I would have rather had the lo-vis clear but hey for $4 I figured I'd give it a go.
Now I hear a lot of people on these forums talking strictly about CXX, the high abrasion resistance extra strong version. But I think many are overlooking the other products in this line that PLine offers, the PF and CX.
PLine PF is a great line as well. it is a small diameter, clear line that has a higher break rating than the # it is rated for (much like other lines, but this one is up there.). This line was nice, smooth and had very low memory and management issues. 12# diameter was .01244 and broke at 18#.
PLine CX is a clear fluorescent copolymer. The line is coated with fluorocarbon to help with abrasion resistance and also gives the added benefit of lower visibility. This line has some line management and memory issues that are a turn off for me caused by the fluoro coating. It is a good line overall, but will not be my choice in the future, it is almost as if they couldn't get the sweet spot. It's close... but not quite there. 12# diameter was .011 and broke at 16#
Pline CXX as stated this is the heavy duty line. When I tested this line I used the 12# (which actually had a breaking point of 27#). This line is a beast had a diameter of .0148.
This line is highly abrasion resistant. Great for working around rocks, never broke off from smacking rocks with spinners, jerk baits etc (!with re-tying). This speaks for it self, I found PLINE CXX to have very little memory issues. This includes fishing in cold weather (Cold WI weather). When I switched to PLine CXX I immediately noticed how great the sensitivity was, this stuff was amazing!
I then tried out the Yo-Zuri hybrid in my testing today. First I'll get the technical stuff out of the way. I used 12# test, it has a diameter of .013 and broke right at 20# on the mark.
That being said, it doesn't have the added strength of the PLine CXX but has a smaller diameter. It has a larger diameter than the PLine CX and PF but also a higher breaking point.
This line is smooth. I will say that right off the bat, the first cast I watched my spinner bait hit the water and sat there for a minute and thought... wow, that was nice. There was no memory, no issues at all, it was just smooth. It remained that way the entire duration, I was surprised to see absolutely no line management issues. The other thing that surprised me was along with the smoothness, was added casting distance. I got probably an added 10-20% distance with this line over any of the PLine lines I threw. I decided the .0006 increase in diameter size over the PLine PF warranted the 2# breakage increase and better casting distance any day in my book.
Well to wrap things up, it comes down to my 2 favorites...
PLine CXX and my new favorite Yo-Zuri Hybrid. I do not think these lines can be compared directly, to me they are in two different categories and intended for two different applications. I will now be throwing Yo-Zuri hybrid on my spinnerbaits, cranks, jerkbaits and I will be throwing PLine CXX on my t-rigged plastics and other set ups I deem to require a higher break point.
This has definitely prompted me to give the yo-zuri hybrid soft variation a shot on my spinning set ups.
I hope this has been informative and will help some of the people who have been trying to figure out these two very different types of line.
