  1. Agree with Jrob. You're asking for contradictory things. By their very nature, flat-sided crankbaits have tighter wobbles than round sided.
  2. I used to carry two colors, black and pumpkinseed. But over the years I've seen what my partners do and I've tried other colors as well. My feeling is that watermelon, green pumpkin, junebug and numerous other colors work just as well. I could be 100% wrong, but I just don't have color at the top of my priority list. It's extremely important for others though. Like so many other things, go with what you have confidence in.
  3. I use 50-60 yards of line to fish with and the rest is backing. Since I never get past the good line, it matters not what the backing is. Its only purpose for me is to occupy space and any line will do regardless of diameter.
  4. I wouldn't if I already owned the number of rods and reels that I felt suited my needs.
  5. Never, unless it's broken or something obviously wrong with it. I can't answer your questions but I've never noticed anything about wearing out. I've got a Fenwick that's gotten heavy use for 15+ years and a Quantum that's even older and performing just as well.
  6. The best advice I can offer is to move around a lot, covering as much water as possible. Eventually you may find some spots that are good and others that are not so good, even if the reason is not apparent to you from shore.
  7. That's pretty interesting. I've been fishing for 40+ years and that thought never occurred to me, but you're right. It'd be fascinating to know why the company named it that.
  8. I think in the past, fishing in Central Park has been talked about on the NY forum.
  9. I carry a stream-type thermometer and attach it to the line and let it sit in the water for a while (30 seconds).
  10. As has been mentioned, it's marketing. I'm convinced that sales of Sweet Beavers, Sexy Shad, Horny Toad and other things that escape my memory would have been less with more ordinary names.
  11. Maybe it's semantics, but to me it's not fishing defensively. I'm trying to maximize my catch regardless of whether or not I'm using wire. As has already been mentioned, there's more involved than the loss of a lure. Some of us don't like the thought of a fish swimming around with a mouthful of crankbait. In the grand scheme of things, it probably makes no difference, but I still don't like it.
  12. I think you've been very fortunate thus far because a toothy fish, even a small one, could cut that line with ease. Someone said recently--I think on this forum, but I can't be sure--that if you can cut the line with a knife a pike can cut it with its teeth.
  13. As the previous poster said, weight and line capacity. Also, bigger spools give more inches of retrieve per turn of the handle. All other things being equal, the larger the spool the better the line handling and casting distance. I bought my first President this spring, model 6935, and it's working out well with my 15# braid. My personal preference is to go with the larger if your choice is down to two because of the aforementioned better line handling.
  14. I agree, go for it. Your chances of catching something big are greater than at most other times.
  15. There are pike and/or pickerel in most of the waters that I fish and I do use wire leaders at times and have caught bass while using them. Would I have caught more bass if I hadn't been using them? Impossible to know, but I don't lose confidence when fishing with them.
  16. Too bad. Customer service in general has a bad reputation, undoubtedly well deserved. In general, when not getting satisfaction with a rep it often helps if the customer asks to speak to the rep's supervisor.
  17. I've been around a long time and have never heard that term.
  18. Buzzbaits are my 2nd favorite topwater after Jitterbugs. Here in New York, an awful long ways from Texas, topwaters, not just buzzbaits, are effective in the fall, say, down to the low to mid-50s in these parts in my experience.
  19. I've read about fishermen making homemade scents. Fow example, using petroleum jelly as a base and adding flavor. Just make sure that what you use is not a substance that has a negative effect on a bass. A gel should last considerably longer than a liquid. I say go for it. Lots of anglers have had success with their own creations, be they lures, scents or otherwise.
  20. Cheap and quality are like beauty, in the eye of the beholder. To me, reels of $100 and up are not cheap. The most expensive reel I've ever bought was this year, $70 (I think) for a Pflueger President. I also use Daiwa Regal series reels. These handle line well, stand up to use and have smooth drags. I don't ask more of a reel than those things.
  21. That's my opinion as well. The fish readily hit my black Jitterbugs and soft plastics and there's no reason they wouldn't hit black cranks as well.
  22. They won't be there for long if you listen to the "experts", unless someone loses. Oregon's schedule is getting tougher and that by itself should be enough for them to jump FSU. But your team is way more relevant than it's been for years.
  23. I agree. It'd be political suicide to let that program fail.
  24. Ever hooked a snapper? I have a couple of times and it's definitely an adventure.
  25. I've seen a lot of complaints about Charlie over the years, and I'm not crazy about him myself, but he's the EverReady battery, keeps on tickin', for whatever reason.
