  1. I'm going fishing on a river this weekend with a couple of buddy's. we don't have a boat so we will have to fish from shore. the spot we want to fish is close to a dam and the water looks pretty slow with the lack of rain we have had. there is still current and it is split by a big island in the middle. where will the fish be positioned and what lures will catch them? the weather has been pretty warm(70-75) so cold water isnt to much of a factor.
  2. i live in Illinois. last year i had a lot of numbers and only a few fish over 4 pounds. this year I've gone to swimbaits for bigger fish. i haven't caught that 10 pounder yet but I've caught 2 6 pounders and dozens of 4 and 5 pounders. also i have gone to finese baits and those have paid off great! placed 8th in a high school tournament where i cought 3 non keepers and a big 4 pounder on a shaky head worm. didn't get us into the top five though :'(. compared to last season i have caught a lot more of quality fish.
  3. big fish love a deep diving crankbait! make sure it has a tight wobble to imitate a shad. if you want a lot of fish then a soft plastic jerkbait will work great. rig it on a weighted hook (1/16 ounce). if you are after a giant fish try fishing a storm wildeye swim shad. fish it right over the bottom and give a couple jerks upward to make any fish nearby or following the lure will create a reaction strike. if all else fails try using a lipless crankbait. won a tournament fishing 30 ft of water using a lipless crankbait. mainly because of a 6 pound kicker.
  4. if your fishing shallow then the fish are probably scattered. dont spend all your time in one spot. if there are weeds then pitch a jig or creature bait in the holes of the weeds. if your fishing deep (12 ft+) then fish a crankbait or a swimbait. these fish are usualy schooling and are in a feeding mood. if the school turns off try using a finese worm or a jig to get the school going again. if none of these work then use a 7 inch worm and fish rocks and drop offs. good luck!
  5. there is a local quarry near my house that is super clear. the visibility is about 25 feet. i can see bass in shallow water sitting in the weeds and they dont spook when i walk by. I cast all types of lures and none are producing. what lures will get these fish to bite?
  6. I'm going on a little fishing trip this weekend and I'm mostly going for pike and bass.I going to have a pole for live bait and a i am picking some up at the local tackle store. what will work better bluegill, shiners, suckers or big minnows. all of these baitfish are in the river. bobbers or bottom fishing? what will work? and what time will the live bait be best?
  7. there are some big ones but most of them are 18-23 inches. but i did catch a 38 incher last year. you just have to fish for the big ones and the small ones only seem to bight bass lures. we call them snakes.
  8. for the past week i have been fishing a channal of the fox river. > and every day i catch 3 times more pike than bass. i gone to topwater to jigs. what am i doing wrong. I WANT MORE BASS!!!!!
  9. fishing with big lures! like swimbaits and big jigs. big fish are lazy. they want an easy meal so a big lure is a good choice. fish slow. good places to fish would be lily pads, matted weeds, blufs and riprap and dropoffs. fish these places with big lures and your chances of a lunker will sky rocket!! ;D
  10. Our area is getting pounded with rain. the lake i usualy fish is low right now so the rain will probley help it rise a little. the lake has little shoreline brush and those areas are usualy not very productive. how will the fish be affected the next day and what will catch them?
  11. i just found a KickTail® XL-5 swimbait and it floats and swims on the waters surface. I love how it swims on top but i dont have the money to buy to new one (Since its $30 dollars). what is a good way to give it weight so it can swim under the surface and wont mess up its great action.
  12. i just fished in a tournament that had conditions almost the same as yours. the top ten that went on to day two (including me ;D) they were using creatures and frogs. they would swim the creatures over the heavy matted weads and fish would blow up on them. if that doesnt work take your out board and go through the pads and make lanes for you to cast in. after you have done that go to another spot and do the same thing and by the time you get back the fish will have calmed down. if all else fails then try fishing a spinner bait on the edges of the pads. good luck!
  13. if you dont get any fish in deep water, put on a jig or or plastic worm and fish shallow water with plenty of heavy cover. some fish might be spawing or be in pre-spawn and if this is true fishing shallow with a big presentation like a swimbait or big jig will catch you the most active fish in the area.
  14. if you own a boat try fishing where shore fishermen cant get to. if you don't own a boat, then fish the weeds along the bank and try to fish far away from other fishermen or other people. and be careful, pay attention where your walking because if you don't pay attention you can wind up on private property and get into a lot of trouble.
  15. the local quarry by me is finally being opened to the public up after 10 years of being closed and the lake has been stocked with all kinds of fish. I've heard that people have been down there (illegally) and they caught some big fish. the lake is really clear and there is no boat pressure. how long will the fishing stay really good and what are some good lures to catch them on?
