  1. Sam - I actually did that on Labor Day, but didn't go out until mid afternoon. I had a fish on a texas rigged lizard, but I'm still figuring the hookset with texas rigging...either that or I'm doing it wrong. Still learning that one. The wife caught a sunfish on a nightcrawler. And then it started pouring down rain. Definitely interested in figuring it out more since its close to the house. There any decent sized fish in there? I know its only recently been reopened. Wish I had a smaller boat so I could putt around there, great cover everywhere, and the kind I know how to get into. How is fishing Powhatan Ponds? Only ever went hiking there(we just moved here at the beginning of summer) and ended up with ticks crawling all over us. And another boating question...when do the jet skiers and water skiers disappear from the Watkins Landing area?
  2. Thanks for the info. Was trying to figure out a place to go this weekend, but I've given up on taking the boat out. Don't want to deal with all the people. Luckily their time is up as the temperature starts to drop.
  3. Anyone ever fish there? Any suggestions? I always forget about this place and I'm hoping pleasure boaters do as well.
  4. I put in at Morris Creek this past Sunday, absolutely no luck with all my usual baits. My wife even showed me up with a a nightcrawler and caught a catfish (first fish she ever caught). My first time out there, though, and thought the place was pretty awesome as far as the scenery goes, so I'm definitely interested in trying some more. Found a really deep ledge as you exit Morris Creek and head upriver(which I'm sure everyone knows...got up to 60+ feet in areas). This a good spot for catfish? Pretty sure I'm gonna change tactics and try that out until I get to know the area better. Oh...and kept seeing some large splashes all around, stripers?
  5. Was driving out to Rt. 155 in Charles City County on Friday to look at a road I'll be working on this coming week and saw a "Public Boat Landing" sign. As per usual I followed it to see where it brought me. I ended up out at the Chickahominy WMA. The place looked peaceful, quiet, and most importantly, not busy. Now I'm interested in taking my boat out there and finding out what there is to be fished. I'm fairly new to boating and have no experience on the Chickahominy, but my father purchased a bass boat for us to use, so I just want to make sure I'm not gonna end up anywhere too shallow. Is this place safe for said boat? And if so, whats the fishing like?
  6. Thanks for the info. We're looking to get into the smallies and I've heard flathead fishing is supposed to be really good up that way as well.
  7. Is it safe to use a bass boat on the upper James? I'm talking Powhatan/Goochland(or further up if possible) down to Bosher's Dam. I know I've seen ski boats on the water as far down as Bosher's dam, so I'm just curious as my dad is talking about buying a boat this summer and we're trying to figure out what we want. Lots of good prices on all types on craigslist, but we don't want to limit ourselves to a small jon boat since we want to fish freshwater anywhere and everywhere we couldn't really access before. Thanks ahead for any info.
  8. Anyone been since the last post? I'm gonna be in Richmond this weekend, trying to figure out what kind of fishing I want to do and wanted to know if they are still active.
  9. Live bluegill is the best for big cats. If you want to be sneaky about the legality of it, you can always use them as cut bait. For the best chances, make sure you catch bluegill in the body of water you want to fish for cats.
  10. Springfield Construction Inspector Getting ready to move back to Richmond in the coming months, though. I haven't had a whole lot of luck up here in this area. When I have a little bit of time I'll hit up Burke Lake just so I can say I got some fishing in. Otherwise I just stick with catfishing on the Occoquan River at the park. I'm getting a boat this summer, which will open up more for me, BUT...I'll be back in Richmond on the good old James River. I've only gone to Fountainhead once, not much luck, any suggestions for that place if I find time to rent a boat and hit it up before I move?
  11. Like kingofkistler said, this place gets overfished, so bank fishing can be a waste of time. If you are on the bank, though, I've been catching small large mouth near the boat ramp on stickbaits and spinners. You can see the bigger ones suspended there with them, but I haven't been able to entice them at all. I did however see someone catch a bigger one over near the dam on what looked like a jig. Good luck.
