  1. Man, you and me are gonna have to have some serious discussions. Either that, or you'll have to write a Beale AFB Bass Fishing Guide! I think I'll try the bend this weekend, if I find the time. Frisky on base wears me out already!
  2. Lipsticker, Frisky is the lake you need the key for, and my personal best bass was outta that pond. I drag my float tube out there after work all the time, and it's always good fishing! I didn't know you could fish that creek coming out of the dam, but I do now. I'm going to have to check that out. Same with the pond outside the Grass Valley gate. As for fishing outside the base, I've done Oroville twice now, and I'm headed to Clear Lake in a few weeks. Did you ever try fishing the quarry ponds, near the concrete companies outside the Doolittle gate?
  3. Road Warrior advised me to get it, so I bit the bullet and bought 1200 yards (I went a little nuts). No complaints, and I won't be using anything else. That stuff is as smooth as ice!
  4. One thing I will not do is go to another spot like it That got my attention right there. When we nearly got skunked at Oroville, we moved from favorite hole to favorite hole, but every single one of them was rock piles in 15ft of water. Changed lures, changed styles, changed colors, but we kept blasting away at the same structure type. We were in a rut, or perhaps fishing what was comfortable and familiar, but that was the problem! Thanks for the wake up call! Frank
  5. All I can think of is that Talladega Nights quote: "One of you turds is about to get punched in the mouth!"
  6. A buddy of mine went fishing at Oroville yesterday, and we nearly got skunked, and I'm trying to figure out if the carp we saw had anything to do with it. I know most of you haven't seen Oroville, but it's a decent lake with a steep bank that continues down into the water. There are tons of rock slides that start on shore and continue down into the water, and these are our favorite places to fish. But each of these piles we went to had dozens of massive carp, easily 6lb+, cruising and various depths, as well as thrashing the shoreline, doing what I don't know. We usually bounce Senkos and jigs off those rocks at 8 to 10 feet, with great results, but the 5 bass we caught in 11 hours were deep (25ft or more). I'm looking for your opinions on whether or not these trash fish might have an impact on the bass bite. I was thinking the bass might have been deep because the temperature was 101, but that had just started and the water was still pretty cool, so in my mind it was those stinkin carp. I just need one person to say it was, and I'm going out there with my 9mm. Frank
  7. I'd take rain over sun any day of the week for fishing, and not just for bass, but for trout and crappie. 95% of my fishing is from a float tube, so the rain won't mess with any of my equipment (it's all canvas and rubber), and I just get a good feeling while fishing in the rain. If any of you on the forums had your dads cut holes in black garbage bags to make easy ponchos, you know what I mean. Last time it rained here I fished the base pond with some of those Spro Bronzeye frogs, and I tore em up!
  8. Review w/pics: http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1242241244 That Mojo is paired with a Pflueger President XT. That combo is as smooth as ice.
  9. Preciate it. I'll be there on June 4th.
  10. Last week I bought the Bass Mojo/Pflueger President spinning setup that Bigmountaineer was advertising as a little birthday present to me from me. After work I took my tube out on one of the base ponds, just to make sure that Mojo would catch fish, which it did, as you can see below. They're not hawgs, but still not bad for a quick trip after work! Montaineer, thanks again for getting that rod to me so fast. That combo is as smooth as ice! Frank
  11. Tomac, Do you have a time that they meet on those Thursdays? Bass Busters sounds like something I'm going to have to get in on.
  12. Man, I'm carrying a vendetta against Collins right now, after two trips with nothing to show for it! At least my wife doesn't mind going as long as we pick up some ice cream. I'm trying to make it out to Oroville and Engelbright more often, so if you guys in the area want to fish, let me know! DGF, I'll always take a back seat that's available! I'll keep this board up to date with reports from fishing trips. Frank
  13. Thank God for the Lower 48! While all three of those destinations are outstanding, they don't pay government workers all that much... Man, I can see that conversation play out in my head right now! "Hon, we can't really get any groceries for the next few months, but just think of how much fun I'd have bass fishing in Brazil!" I'll think of that next time I have the hiccups!
  14. Just wanted to see if anyone knew off the top of their heads of Buckeye jigs are American-made? A buddy of mine told me they were, but I can't find it on their site. If you know, chime in! Thanks. Frank
  15. I guess it's just the way you fish growing up! Cattails are a cover I'll fish, but I can't walk away from rock piles in ANY body of water, no matter what I'm fishing for.
  16. NorCal here, Yuba/Sutter, 45 minutes north of Sacramento. More fishing to come on Oroville and Collins, if the wind would drop from Hurricane to just good ol' Tropical Storm. Mostly I use a float tube on small ponds, but I think I've talked my wife into letting me get a boat!
  17. I went fishing over the weekend at Oroville, and I've got a question about cover in general (or Oroville specifically, if you've been there!). Now, the banks of most of the lake are rock slides that continue down into the water, with a semi-steep bank. The water was decently warm for the weather (sunny but windy), considering the size and depth of Oroville. My buddies and I were nailing bass with Senko's and Trick Sticks from sun-up til around 5, but ONLY if we stuck to the rocks in coves around the lake. As we explored, we found coves and areas with tons of submerged trees with their tops poking out of the water (no depth finder, so I have no idea how large those trees really are, but there were several shallow areas). Screams "cover", right? Stick baits, jigs, spinners, nothing produced in the trees. I know there are no cut and dried answers for this, but I'm curious why largemouth would stick to the large boulders on the slopes instead of trees and brush in shallower areas. Any ideas? Frank
  18. Weightless, all the way, but I fish weeds in 6ft of water average, and the vast majority of the strikes happen about 3ft down on the drift. Just personal experience!
  19. I'm still new to the Beale AFB area, and most of my forrays into the bass fishing world have been confined to the base, but if anyone lives in the area and wants to hook up for some fishing (and doesn't mind sharing tips and secrets!), give me a holler! Frank
  20. They do have a few canoes available, but I forgot to mention that I fish this pond in a float tube (fishing from the bank would be near impossible, with the rattlers coming out). I'll try deeper water, like right off the edge of those weeds. One thing I completely forgot to mention is the possibility of using topwaters. Now, I didn't really think it was an option, since I figured that warmer weather = bass go deeper (that and topwaters are lowest on my "confidence" list), but I might have to give that a shot. You think a bass would hesitate to hit a frog if he's sitting at the bottom of 8 feet of water?
  21. Hey guys, just a quick question about pond fishing. There's a small one on base, and I've been fishing it since the season opened. Off the bank there are about 3 feet of cattails, and then another 10-15 feet of submerged weeds. The water drops off from a foot to about 8 feet right off those cattails. Right off the bank are also some submerged trees and cover. Every fish I've caught up there has been on a black/red flake Zoom worm (shhh!) that I would cast right up against those cattails. The bass pics in my sig, as well as the rest of the 16"-18" bass I've caught have nailed that worm after sinking maybe 3 feet into those weeds. I went up there the other day and nearly got skunked, and the fish I did catch were dinks. There are three things that changed between my previous trip and the most recent: -Temperature has gone up nearly 20 degrees to around 90, and the water line has dropped about 4". -I've noticed that, since the water has warmed up, the pond has gotten a little clearer. It's still murky, but not as solid as it had been. -I changed from 6 lb Trilene XL to 10 lb XT. Now the water line hasn't changed much, so I can't help but blame my recent bass shortage on changing my line to something a good bit heavier. Do you guys think I should pull back and fish the edge of the submerged weeds instead of the cattails? This would mean leaving the trees and other cover, but I'm kind of stumped on where the bass might have moved to. I've used nothing but those Zoom worms, since the weeds are pretty heavy, but if I back off a bit I could probably try out a spinnerbait or rattletrap. I guess that wasn't so quick, but opinions would be great!
  22. Hey guys, I've been watching this site for a couple of weeks now, but I didn't want to actually join until I went out and caught a few respectable bass, just in case the admins want proof! I just moved to Beale AFB, CA, after 5 years overseas, and it's a whole different world of fishing for me now. 2 years ago you would have seen me on a high mountain lake in my float tube, casting delicate size 16 flies to try and convince finnicky trout to sip them up. Now I sit in that same float tube on back road ponds, chucking 8" Zoom worms and Senkos at ticked off bass! I guess the move to the dark side is complete. You can't post links to images until you've posted 10 times, but I put a few in my signature block, to show proof of my rite of passage. Thanks for letting me join! Frank
