  1. A ruler is an instrument used to measure items - you can't weigh with a ruler.
  2. BK, do you kill every fish that you catch? Every pic you post has the fish lying in the dirt!
  3. Unless you are fishing tidal waters forget the moon.
  4. laisser le de phase bas - tuer seulement la truite
  5. Gotta watch out for some of them Georgia boys.
  6. Opinions are like your butt - everyone has one, and everyone thinks everybody elses stinks. When you become dogmatic with your opinion you become the butt. I've been fishing in Florida for the last 5 decades and I have only seen collosal improvements. The hydrilla is missing from the Stick Marsh, but the bass are still there! My boat is and always has been C&R. What you do on your boat within the law is your business and I have no right to think otherwise.
  7. Study Osmosis and Difusion to understand how a bass's respiration works. Basics: The bass clears its gill area by closing its mouth and pushing out water out through the lower operculum area - The bass opens it mouth and water fills the void - the bass closes its mouth and pushes the water out through the lower operculum. (Note that when you have the bass's mouth open by depressing the lower lip, the operculum is also open.) As the water surrounds the gill surfaces Osmosis occurs. (movement of a highly concentrated substance moving through a semi-permeable substance to an area of low concentration; disolved oxygen.) So you see: if the bass's mouth is hung open with your fingers you cut the bass's ability to respire quite a bit. Hold the bass by the tail firmly until it swims forcefully from your hand. I say forcefully because the initial surge to freedom in many cases is only a nerve induced reaction to flee. It is much the same as you, when you are severely hurt, trying to get to your feet. Different fish breath through different means - for example, catfish, mudfish, and gar can breathe oxygen from the air, which is why you find them thriving in areas of low oxygen. Bass, a member of the sunfish family have unusually large gill surfaces which is why they are able to wander in and out of these areas.
  8. You answered your question with your first statement.
  9. Never give a bait to a critter. They are too expensive! Gators are a regular: play them like you would a bass. Osprey, Hawks, Sea Gulls, Terns, Pelicans, Snakes - both friendly and unfriendly, Turtles, and more. The only critter we couldn't get the hook out of was a full grown adult otter.
  10. Rope You can attach the boat to the anchor with rope, chain, or a combination of the two. Rope is the overwhelming favorite, usually with a length of chain at the anchor end. Use nylon rope only. Nylon rope is strong, light, easy to handle, and elastic, the latter a most desirable characteristic in an anchor rode. Three-strand offers the dual advantages of greater elasticity and lower cost, but where the anchor line will be fed through a deck pipe for stowage, the added flexibility of braided nylon can make it a better choice. Determining how long your anchor rode should be is as simple as multiplying the deepest water you expect to anchor in by 8. As for rope size, the rule of thumb is 1/8" of rope diameter for every 9' of boat length. So if you expect to anchor your 26' boat in 30' of water, you need 240' of 3/8" nylon rope. Unlike oversizing the anchor, oversizing the line is not recommended because that reduces its beneficial elasticity. As a practical matter, however, rope with a diameter smaller than 3/8" is difficult to grip. In an emergency the line can be tied to the chain or the anchor using an anchor bend, but for regular use give the end of the line an eye splice around a thimble, and shackle the line to the chain Boat US: Don Casey
  11. You are disturbed by what is legal in the state of Utah.
  12. Buy a scale - any measurement formula is just a guesstimate and highly inaccurate.
  13. Gizzard shad - great for crab or crawfish bait: not much for bass bait.
  14. Greenwood Lake is an interstate lake approximately 7 miles long and the lake is 9 miles, straddling the border of New Jersey and New York. It is located in West Milford, New Jersey (in Passaic County) and Greenwood Lake, New York (in Orange County). Fisherman's House, Greenwood Lake (New Jersey) 1877 by Jasper Francis CropseyThe lake was originally called "Quampium" by the Munsee Native Americans who lived there. It was renamed "Long Pond" by Europeans, who settled the area as a farming community in the 1700s, and eventually came to be re-christened "Greenwood Lake." Around the corner was a producer: Green Turtle Pond - Before Monksville, Stonetown had some good ponds along the stream - Upper Greenwood was a big fish producer - Best of the area although difficult to get to: Bear Swamp Lake, located on the top of the Ramapo Mountains in Mahwah. What a gem this place was before Green Acres.
  15. Caught on a Paul Higgins hand pour before Worminator was a household word. The 5" curly tail was as dynamic a producer as you could get your hands on. Sid caught this bass back somewhere around "98-99" and at the time was the Region 7 director of Virginia.
  16. Have never seen anything that can beat the foothills of the Sierra Madres. Huites is a major gem.
  17. Drag washers become compressed over time - do not store reel with drag tight: always loosen at end of day.
  18. Their location does not mean its right - also perhaps the transducer was replaced previously; in any event it sounds like it has a void under it. Fuse size would not alter running.
  19. Transducer located poorly, is the probable reason for the poor reads. Air voids in the glass can cause this. '' Engine problem sounds like a fuel flow problem, which could be from several things including dirty filter.l
  20. As I said: check with your DNR. How To Certify a State Record Freshwater Fish 1. Angler must have a valid Florida fishing license or be exempt under provisions addressed in FloridaFreshwater Sport Fishing Regulations. 2. The fish must have been caught legally using an active hook-and-line method (bush hooks, ****** hooks, set lines, trotlines, etc. are excluded) in fresh waters of Florida. 3. If possible, keep the fish alive. If it is not possible to keep the fish alive, place it in ice water. Avoid freezing the fish, because it will dehydrate causing it to lose weight. 4. Before contacting the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), weigh the fish to determine if a possible state record exists. 5. Make arrangements with the local FWC office during business hours to have the fish species certified by abiologist, and to have a FWC employee witness the official weighing, on a certified scale, and take measurements. In most cases an autopsy wil be performed on the fish whether presented alive or dead.
  21. Refraction can make objects appear closer than they are, it is responsible for allowing water to magnify objects. First, as light is entering a drop of water, it slows down. If the water's surface is not flat, then the light will be bent into a new path. This round shape will bend the light outwards and as it spreads out, the image you see gets larger.
  22. Catch and release law does not alter what is a legal or an illegally caught fish. An out of season fish is an illegally caught fish. For a state record the fish must be a legally caught fish. The operative requirement is the fish must be legally caught. Killing the fish could make the catch highly contestable because you could have found the fish floating dead. Your state DNR can supply you with requirements for submission. IGFA can supply you with requirements for submission.
