  4. Sometimes ludicrous tales travel through this media and this certainly seems to be one of those tales. "Who is John Fox? I found a guide named John Fox that claims to have caught numerous fish in the upper teens. Like 18 and 19 lbs. Anybody know him?" Mr. Fox presently has at least 6 world record bass pending. These and other dubious claims have been pending for the last 15-20 years. This fishing world of ours is actually quite small and there are very few within the industry that don't know about Mr. Fox's stretchable veracity when it comes to claims about bass. The film for the Incredible Walking Worm was shot at the Stick Marsh. You might ask what was the name of the lead fisherman: Mr. John Fox. Other than that he's a great guy.
  5. Top song, top performer. Jennifer is here to stay! Carrie: been rooting for that gal since her first audition on American Idol, and she certainly has proven how good she is.
  6. Two things come to mind: Jerkbaits, try both suspending and floating.

  8. The opportunity to learn in a club atmosphere only comes if you have two open-minded people on board. The opportunity to learn in a circuit tournament, if you are observant, is how to improve your mechanical skills. The mechanical skills involved in this past-time of ours are of extreme importance, but it is an area that is only a few will improve to a level needed in upper level tournaments. The use of rod, reel, and associated tackle can be improved by paying attention. The opportunity to learn the fine points of locating fish aren't likely to be presented when fishing the circuit tournaments as the "Pro" will have already laid out his choices and rarely with any input from the "Co". However, if the "Pro" is talkative you might gain in this area. Club tournaments offer the opportunity to "share and learn" fish locating simply because in most cases, two heads are better than one. If you do get good at the "mechanics", and good at "locating" you can then learn what observation and concentration truly mean by observing both levels of tournament fishing, but circuit tournaments will lead the way in these two areas. These attributes are the most difficult to learn, and the most important of all your fishing skills.

  10. Mutiple spawns occur frequently in the southern reaches of North America: however, further north would need unusual weather conditions to have this occur. For example, here on the Stick Marsh there are two distinctive spawns most years. The first will occur from December to February depending on weather conditions. Its occurence will determine the spring spawn, which will range from late February through May. Both spawns will be major events. I have also noted a minor spawn occuring in September, however this is a rarity.
  11. Interesting writing: now if he can just apply that to really finding fish I won't find him fishing in the spot that I reported on yesterday.
  12. "Fishing has been particularly good due to fishery management efforts of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department who began stocking Lake Fork with Florida largemouth bass in 1978. Lake Fork was opened for fishing in the fall of 1980. A new state record largemouth bass weighing 18.18 pounds was caught from Lake Fork in January 1992." (I believe that is 14 years after stocking) However Fork is/was a tributary of the Sabine river and there certainly was bass there before the dam was build. The most difficult thing to learn is reality in this sport of ours. I would encourage anyone that wishes to learn to do some research in publications other than fishing magazines. The growth in bass is not linear. It is slow in the beginning, accelerates for a period, and then slows again. The separation of fact and fiction is a real challenge.
  13. I am confidant therefore I am patient. You cannot reverse that statement.
  14. A nice story yes, but a great article no.
  15. Florida strain: Age and Growth - Growth rates are highly variable with differences attributed mainly to their food supply and length of growing season. Female bass live longer than males and are much more likely to reach trophy size. By age two or three, females grow much faster than male bass. Males seldom exceed 16 inches, while females frequently surpass 22 inches. At five years of age females may be twice the weight of males. One-year old bass average about seven inches in length and grow to an adult size of 10 inches in about 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 years. The oldest bass from Florida whose age has been determined by fisheries biologists was 16 year of age. Generally, trophy bass (10 pounds and larger) are about 10 years old. The formula used by Florida scientists to estimate weight based on length and girth is: log(weight, in grams) = -4.83 + 1.923 x log(total length, in mm) + 1.157 x log(girth, in mm). Click here for an automated formula, and here to determine how to properly measure your fish. Typically a two-year bass will be between 10 and 13 inches. With ideal conditions a growth rate of 2-pounds per year can be seen from the 3rd year on, with a drop in growth rate after the attainment of 22-24 inches. However, ideal condtions are very rare.
  16. Repairable by having it cut off and a new one welded on. It probably won't bother your handling much, if at all, but if it does you will need to have it done. I cannot be straightened more than likely as it will probably snap off if it is attempted. If you have a new one welded on than have the seals replaced in the lower unit as the heat needed may well ruin the seals.
  17. Circuit board component break-down. One of these times it simply will not come back on. MK is guaranteed for 3 years. Take it in for repair.
  18. Gotta love it cause it is so often the truth - Nothing like witnesses to change everything. Thanks Mr. M
  19. 1959 - 19.9 per gallon - for about 3 days .081 to .099 depending on station: this was the approximate federal tax amount per gallon. Many came with trucks loaded down with 55-gallon drums to fill.
  20. If you had purchased $1,000 of shares in Delta Airlines one year ago, you would have $49 today. If you had purchased $1,000 of shares in AIG one year ago, you would have $33 today. If you had purchased $1,000 of shares in Lehman Brothers one year ago, you would have $0 today. But, if you had purchased $1,000 worth of beer one year ago, drank all the beer, then turned in the aluminum cans for the recycling refund, you would have received $214. Based on the above, the best current investment plan is to drink heavily and recycle. It is called the 401-Keg Plan.
  21. When you talk northern strain I think you really mean northern state strain. Intergrade (Northern strain bass mixed with Florida strain) are found as far south as the St John's river in Florida. George Perry's bass was either an intergrade, (mixture of Northern and Florida), or a northern strain but not likely northern. If it was a Florida strain someone transported it there and planted it. To get a guaranteed Florida strain bass you need to be fishing south of what is known as the weather line, (Tampa to south Melbourne).
  22. According to history - everything south of that line.
  23. They both offer a base with a 3/4" pin receptor.
  24. From what I am reading you need to clarify if: 1) Won't start because it will barely turn over. 2) "or" turns over just fine but doesn't want to start. #1 based on your statement that the battery is new is either alternator or starter. To check the alternator is relatively easy - using a volt meter check the battery with the motor running - as stated above voltage should be 13.5+ to 14.2. To check the starter is more difficult as you need to check amperage draw when cranking. However an indication that it is starter is varying cranking speed. ie: one time it cranks over easily and the next it will barely crank over. Not sure on this one? Take it to someone. #2 gets far more complicated and could be a multitude of things: Take this one to a technician.
