I was once told that OB2 and OB3 engine controls have a memory of the vehicle driving "history" and this type of thing can happen if you do this; sorta' puts it in safe mode?
Also told that if you remove the negative post for longer than 45 minutes, it will re-set the computer.....
thus said, maybe you need to nail it AFTER you reconnect.....

I just leave 'em alone and they do the same for me.
When i'm fishing out of the 8' 'Gecko, i tend to be a little more calm as they cruise by........ one place has one a lot longer than my boat..........no problems.
Now, if he's waitin at the dock, that's a whole different story.....
I use an old conveyor(?)-belt foot pedal on my two-man boat. It came from an old grocery store; some may recall the age before the electronic "eyes" was introduced as controllers to stop/start the belts.
There are many industrial machines that use heavy steel foot controls. Hobart meat mixer/grinders is one example.
Sure, it's probably pricey, but you will never have to buy another one......
