  1. There could be lots of things going on there. But lets be honest my jigs are not any different form the War Eagles you are used to throwing, they utilize the same hooks, the same basic head design (depending on which head you are using) and the same skirt material. The difference is on the small details, hand tied, better paint, better overall quality. Did you have a problem with one specific jig, or the whole lot? If its one specific jig its possible the hook point is bent, tweaked, or whatever. You also mentioned trimming the weedguard, which imho is a big no no, it makes the weedguard stiffer and inturn affects your hookset, imho if you are going to do anything to the weedguard fan it out, otherwise leave it alone. There also may be a difference in hooks, if you have the Alien head jigs with a trimmed weedguard, that set up is going to require one heck of a hookset, thick 3x hook, stiff weedguard because it is trimmed. I don't know which ware eagles you have but most I have seen have the considerably lighter duty flat eye mustad hook with thinner wire, which will make hooksets easier but are also a weak point in landing of the fish.
  2. Not against it or for it, it is illegal where I live and I am happy it is, that way I don't have to put up with any drama surrounding it, either in making it, marketing it, or fishing it!
  3. ODU magazine online, its free and has some really good articles Outdoors unlimited http://www.odumagazine.com/
  4. lol Allen I want one though, but do you ever read the comment section on Yahoo.... some people are just downright scary
  5. HAHA they do chip, it just takes awhile, and its ot really a chip the paint just eventually wears off,, you know you got the paint good when you can take a cured jig head and repeatedly smash it against concrete and the paint isn't chipped off, the head will be deformed but the paint still doesn't chip.
  6. lol was thinking the same thing about the populations rising for both when I typed that...
  7. if you can get tungsten for $20 a pound I would buy that all day, the last time I checked the going rate for tungsten in powdered form to be pressed it was over $78 a pound, as opposed to about $.25 a pound I pay for lead. You also have to remember the weight factor, I am sure there would be a process to melt down just about anything and get it into a jig or sinker form, but it will not have the weight needed unless your adding tungsten powder, which is again $78 a pound. Your also adding huge manufacturing costs to the process that don't need to be added. there are more loons in this country right now than there was 75 years ago, so tell me, how much is lead effecting them if there over all numbers are rising?
  8. I am betting that the water temp is lower than you guess, I would wait until ice out, then if you have a good warming trend the fish will move up to feed, is the creek dumping in colder water or warmer water? I am guessing that this time of year the water coming in from the creek is frigid and they stay away from it. As the water warms it will atract bait fish and the bigger fish will follow. right now I would think that the fish are holding in a deeper area of the lake waiting for things to warm up, the deeper the water the warmer it is closer to the bottom, at 20' the water temp will be closer to 39 degrees as opposed to 33-34 closer to the surface of the ice. this is why most fish hold in the deeper part of the lake during ice cover, and move shallower as the ice comes off.
  9. I disagree with the above posters, I use powder and it does not chip, is stronger than any vinyl and is a breeze to apply, there are some "secrets" to powder the first thing you need to do is throw a thermometer in your oven and check the temp, it sounds off to me lots of toaster ovens have horrible temp control, it probably initially gets up to 350 but then cools back down to 250 anf then back up to 350 and you never get your full cure, you can also leave it in the oven for longer it won't hurt anything and will help it cure if the temp isn't great , I cure at 365 and have digital ovens, 365 is 365. If your temp is not high enough the paint will chip. The other "secrets" are usiing as thin of a coat of powder as you can to still get full coverage, watch the temperature that you are dipping the jig at, if you remove it from your cup and it already flashed you are going to have to much paint on it, you want it kinda flat looking when removed from the powder. Temp control on both baking and dipping are your two most important factors
  10. The onlt thing I coulf think of would be a total inches tournament, make everyone carry a measuring board (no soft tapes very inaccurate) and photo there top 5 on a board, this way they have proof, you could make them wafe in pairs to make it easier and verifiable if didn't want to do the photo thing
  11. Natural river fish are not usually a tough nut to crack, unlike lake fish they are almost always eating, they have to in order to deal with the current in natural rivers. If it is a just a single channel river start looking for current breaks, either man made or natural, current breaks can either be visible like a shoreline eddy, wing dam or other man made structure that restrict current flow. Or not visible, like an underwater drop off, at the front of the drop off there is a spot where fish can sit and get out of the current, it depends on the size of the structure as to how big this spot is, it may be big enough for only one fish, or it maybe big enough for a whole school, underwater boulder fields will also hold fish and are not visible depending on how deep they are. usually when you locate a current break the most active fish will be at the front of the break taking advantage of the conveyor belt that is bringing them food, but this is not a steadfast rule, if the water is rising fish tend to stick closer to structure, if the river is near flood stage fish tend to be on the slack water side of flooded structure, falling water is probably the toughest imho, fish tend to scatter more. There is also alot to learn about current in a natural river, more or less your pattern in a given day is how are fish relating to the current, the majority of the time they are going to be in or directly adjacent to the already mentioned breaks, but sometimes they will appear to be right out in the current feeding. If you look at one common peice of current structure like a river bend the fastest water usually is towards the outside of the bend, there is usually stuff to break up current on the outside next to shore, like limbs or whole trees that have gotten pushed into the area, or dugout banks from the fast current cutting into them, often times fish will use these peices of cover as ambush points. What often gets overlooked on a structure like a river bend is the inside of the bend, that to is a current break as the water ius forced towards the outside of the bend there is a pocket created on the inside turn that is usually relatively void of any current, this might be a rather large break and under the right conditions can hold more fish than the ambush points directly across the river from it, the fish tend to be more nuetral on the inside turns but they are river fish, so you can usually entice them to bite. So after that long rambling post which you may or may not have gotten info from, if you are trying to pattern river fish on a single channel river fish all sorts of different current breaks, figure out what type of current break the fish are holding on for that given day and look for similar types of current breaks and fish the heck out of em!

  13. Yeah to much desk showing, next time buy more...lol
  14. That is awesome way to go Mike and Glenn!
  15. 5% for me also, for both Largies and Smallies, although the "official" weight of the largest smallie was 5.1 so barely, I have caught what i perceived as bigger but no scale to prove.
  16. The fg9 9 strand weedguard is not long enough to even come close to covering the hookpoint, you would be better off with an fg12 12 strand weedguard, it is cinsiderably lighter than the fg30, I use a 7' ml spinning rod and 6lb test wiht this weedguard all the time and have no problem getting a good hookset. I could help you with this but would have to order the 614 (I believe that is the number) Gammi hook as I only stock the Mustad 32798. Let me know if you want em, there will be a minimum order of at least 25 and would take at least a couple extra days to get the hook in.
  17. Yes they tried to do a better job on the second batch, I know Hooligan likes the Trokar hooks but I personally can't stand them in a jig, my personal experience with them out of 5 jigs was one rolled tip setting into a dock piling (yes it happens, and sometimes I even try to in testing) and one unexplainably bent out hook on a 4lber, I wouldn't think that was normal, but it happened. My biggest gripe about the hook was my sliced up hands after tying jigs with them, the way the cutting point is angled you will get sliced up just by looking at it, let alone trying to tie on it. I still have 3 or 4 jigs left with Trokars and plan to get another batch in later in the spring for more testing, but right now for the money I feel like the Owner deepthroat is still the best jig hook out there.
  18. I only have two hands...lol
  19. That is pretty hard to do for most small companies that hand inject or pour there own, 2 colors would be more realistic, there really is not a 3 color set up for the home hobbiest/business, pouring 3,4,5, or even 6, colors into an open mold is more realistic.
  20. Jig, you can even flip with the right jig so you could cover both bases, but you can also fish a jig deep and anything inbetween. Most versatile bait there is.
  21. LOL, no pics yet, will hopefully have some in a few weeks, waiting on skirt material and trying to take care of the backlog right now!
  22. Haha Nick, I was going to show you last fall when we fished together, but you were catching to many fish as it was so I decided to make you wait...lol
  23. I am finally getting around to adding some of my new stuff onto my website. I have added a 3/8oz size to the Flip and Swim jig, and the finesse jigs are now available in sizes up to 5/8 oz for people who like dragging finesse jigs deep these will work very nicely! In the coming months look for some other new stuff, including a pretty sweet gill color for swim jigs, spinnerbaits, and the Flip and Swim, I did some private testing on this color late last year and it was lights out on Clear water lakes.! Buzzbaits, a new line of standup shakey heads featuring Owner light wire hooks, a new jig for throwing grubs also featuring the same light wire Owner hooks, and possibly a new and improved grass head (this one is a long shot since it is still in the development stage and might have to get "tested" all summer by me . We will also be running monthly specials all of 2012, this months special (i know I am late) is raw and painted jig heads and spinnerbaits, they are all marked 15% off!
  24. hmmmm is what he said about a year ago when someone asked about a rage grub and now that is here!
  25. I am a fan of both Owners, (big surprise I know) usually go with the 36 but have used the 41 on bigger baits and like em both. I don't throw hardbaits much anymore, but if I did would really be looking at switching every bait to an Owner
