I Always start with fast moving baits first to see how aggressive the fish are. For example, a spinnerbait or lipless crankbait are my go to baits. If I get no attention, then I'll progressively slow it down with a senko, tube, grub, finesse worm. If that doesnt work, then I'll go for a jig.
2.5 inch tubes are too small. I use 3.5-4 inch tubes all the time. My favorite finesse setup for smallies is a 3.5 tube w/1/8oz jig. Gets them all the time.
Lucky strikes for me too. Very soft. I bought these tubes about 15 yrs ago and still have them. They are very soft. I dont think they make them anymore. I havent seen them in years.
So far I'm loving the Yo-Zuri hybrid. This is my first season using it and it is very smooth casting, and very manageable and strong. I just put 6# on my spinning reel and it works flawless. As far as knots go, I always use a uni-knot and NEVER lost a fish. Its a very reliable knot for me.
I use 2 different set ups.
Quantum Tour Edition Gary Klein signature series 7' MH rod with a Quantum Energy PT750 w/5.1 ratio w/10# Yo-Zuri Hybrid.
And my back up set up
7' M BPS Extreme Woo Daves cranking rod with a BPS Dave Fritts cranking reel w/ 5.2 ratio w/10# Yo-Zuri Hybrid
