I have multiple rods/reels/line combos for different kind of cranks. If I had to pick one size to accommodate most cranks, I would probably go for a 7'4" med/mod rod.
I've fished Quantums exclusively for over 20yrs now. I have NEVER had a problem with them. I have about 20 reels right now ranging from Catalyst PT's to Tour Edition PT's and they have all performed flawlessly. No finish blemishes either. I love Quantum reels and will always fish them. I also use Quantum Tour Edition PT rods and they have been great as well.
I would recommend the following for a beginner bass fisherman:
spinnerbaits
flukes
tubes
finesse worms in both 4.5" and 7"
lipless cranks
grubs
jigs
senko
off-set worm hooks in 3/0,4/0,5/0
