SK Zeros, Finesse or any 3x Elaztech plastics do not work well with twist locks. SK makes a shaky jig head that works best for the finesse worms. I rig my Zeros weightless with 3/0 or 4/0 EWG Gammy.
I compile waaaay to much informatin on my fishing logs, so here's my data for 2009.
Black Buzzbait w/ trailer hook: 94 bass 14.23" avg
Topwater cranks (LC Kelly J, Heddon Spitn Image, Spook, Devil Horse): 29 bass 13.07"
Frog (SK Rage Toad, Spro Bronzeye): 22 bass 13.26"
"Handier than a sleeve on a shirt." as Bill would say. I do not go fishing without it. It's perfect for treble hooks and works better than needle nose for single hooks taken deep. You won't regret this purchase.
This thread contains subliminal messaging from the Bait Monkey!!!
I have around 30 community fishing lakes in my area that are perfect for those 2-4 hr bank fishing outings. The levels seldom change enough for me to get a glimpse of depth and structure...so I jumped on the Hawkeye Fish Finder for $46. I will let you know how it works when the snow melts....
Bullfrog that attacked my SK Rage Toad.
Plastic lawn chair.
Cheap rod/reel combo that was beyond repair.
Metal minnow bucket that felt like the biggest fish ever - kept diving everytime I'd reel it up. :'(
I've had good luck with Zman and SK Pure Poison. I'll use them in murky/stained water the same way I'd use a spinnerbait - with slow steady retrieve or stop n go. I have a lot of colors, but Chartreuse/White seem to work best for me.
I like Zman ChatterFrog too. It stays up toward the surface and is a lot of fun.
A 5lb Larry snapped my 7M KVD Signature series spinning rod last year with 8lb flouro. I was not impressed with this rod at all. I matched it with KVD reel. Took it back to BPS and exchanged it for Bionic Blade.
Yes. I tried one and lost one last year (it was a ghost or bone color on sale from TW). Caught a few fish before I hooked a big log. It is a quality lure and very heavy. Great action and proven effective. I think it was the FC30 though.
I have thought the same thing. Last year, I was walking along the spillway and came across the biggest uglies crawdad - he was in a defensive position (almost as big as my hand) and he was 3 different shades of blue. I have seen greens and browns, but never blue.
So my guess is anything on the bottom that is dark or a version of dark replicates some type of forage and the movement triggers the predatory nature of the bass.
Now is the time for the biologist to add to the thread...
Those two combos you mentioned are perfect. If I'm on the bank, I'll carry:
6'6" Med/F Spinning
6'6" MH/F Casting
IMHO, For the $$ you want to spend, I'd look at Bass Pro Shops-unfortunately, you just missed some decent sales which would have saved you $40-50.
Spinning: mid-sized BPS Extreme $50 or Pflueger President $60 matched with BPS Extreme $70 or BPS Bionic $80 rod.
Casting: BPS Pro Qualifier $80 with rods mentioned above.
Good luck!!
I bought a dozen yesterday @ BPS for $.94/each. You can't go wrong at that price. I catch just as many as I do with the SK Red Eye shad. We don't have a lot of grass on my waters. It's been very productive for me with the yo-yo technique. Crank/raise rod, then let it fall...BANG!!
SK's 3X plastics/Elaztech do NOT work well with screw-type heads. SK Shaky Head's are made for this type of plastic and you can save $1/bag @ BPS Classic.
Long story short....
I have a 3 week business trip and wanted to fish on the weekends, so I bought the Flambeau Bazuka Pro which would accomodate my 6'6-7'0 rods. Day before my trip (yesterday) I check Southwest Airlines luggage policy. Anything over 62" is $50 oversize charge...arg!! I could not justify ($70 case + $50 airline charge + $40 nonresident license) for 2 weekends of bank fishing.
I returned the Bazuka Pro and went with the smaller/collapsable Plano Airliner (40") and dug out my old 2-piece rods to pair with my Revos.
Something to consider if you're just wanting to fish recreationally as you travel.
I'd say the hook set!
The strike is exciting.
The hook set is the reaction to the excitement and determines the outcome.
The fight is nerve racking for me. I want the bass in the boat ASAP which means there is no future for me hosting a fishing show.
Carolina Rig...
1. No confidence
2. Can't cast it
3. Rather work on other techniques when the bite shuts off
4. No fun shopping for sinkers and glass beads
Banjo Minnow...
I have fished it once and had to stop because it was driving the BIRDS around me insane! They sat in trees and waited (and calculated) my casts and dive bombed me. I was LOL...too bad it didn't work this good on the fish.
