  1. I suppose its possible that you unknowingly loosened the pawl cap while trying to detangle the line, which would explain why tightening it solved the problem.
  2. No idea. In fact, until I saw the title of your post I had no idea there were 80's music aficionados either.
  3. Without knowing your exact situation, it seems like unless you want to do this long term, the startup cost for a legitimate lawn cutting business (truck, trailer, mowers, etc.) would be prohibitively high, and the type of lawn cutting "business" I had when I was 14 or 15 where you just mow a few neighbors or family friends lawns wouldn't earn you very much money. Since the title of your post is summer job options, let me tell you about some summer jobs I've had that you might consider. The best summer job I've had as far as money and hours was as summer help for a mechanical contractor. I got over ten dollars an hour an hour and worked a normal 7-3:30 monday through friday schedule driving materials and tools from the shop to job sites and doing some pre-fab work. It was a good job and I usually found it relatively enjoyable. I loved the hours and the pay and I met some interesting characters, but I only did it for a year. For the past 3 summers, I've worked as a counselor and climbing wall instructor at a summer camp for kids with special needs, and I absolutely love it. The hours are much longer than the summer help job I had and the pay isn't as nearly as good, especially if you calculate my weekly salary into an hourly rate, but its a ton of fun and one of the most intrinsically rewarding things I have ever done. Also, although I don't make as much money, I also spend a lot less because I live at work and meals are provided. Another job I had before the summer help mechanical contractor job was as kitchen staff at a summer camp. I did a little bit of everything, from prep and service to scrubbing pots and pans. This was another fun job with a normal workweek, although the pay wasn't as good as the summer help job.
  4. I'm still working through my stockpile of Stren Super Braid I got for $4.00 a spool at walmart when it was discontinued. Maybe by the time I'm done with that, the 832 will be discontinued too and I'll get a bunch of it on clearance while Dodgeguy is calling it obsolete and touting the latest and greatest best braid.
  5. I don't have the plastics model, but I do have the spinnerbait model. I throw mostly jigs and t-rigged plastics on the spinnerbait rod. I really like it for those applications. If you're throwing weightless senkos the lower powered rod might be better, but I just use one of my spinning rods for those. I've used mine for spinnerbaits a couple times and its ok, but I have another combo that I prefer for spinnerbaits. That might have more to do with the line than the rod though. I have the reel on my mojo spooled with braid, and I prefer mono for spinnerbaits. Between the two rods you're considering, it really comes down to personal preference. Both should be a good all-around rod, which is better for you depends on how they feel to you and the size of baits and types of cover you fish most often.
  6. Not mine, but the most unique I've seen was an 8" piece of railroad track welded to a chain link.
  7. I'm pretty sure you have that backwards. Mono floats, fluoro sinks.
  8. I saw some in Dick's the other day. I didn't really look at it because I don't need line right now, but if you have one near you might try looking there if you're interested in it. I haven't seen any reviews yet either.
  9. Al didn't invent global warming, he just told everyone about it. You're thinking of the internet.
  10. It appears to be fixed now. Thanks Glenn!
  11. When I look at a thread on here lately, the first post is in the normal position on the page, then the next post is staggered over to the right so the persons username and avatar is displayed where the actual post should start. Each subsequent post is further staggered in similar fashion until by the time I get 5 or 6 posts down there is only room for 1-2 words per line, the the next post is shifted all the way back to the left in the normal starting position. I tried clearing my cookies and it didn't help. Does anyone know whats wrong and how I can fix this?
  12. My brother posed this question to me the other day while we were fishing. My response: a hook.
  13. I had three days in a row off from school and work for the first time in I don't know how long, so I decided to make the 4 hour drive up to Great Sacandaga with my brother to visit my grandparents. We got up there Saturday and left Monday, but only fished Saturday and Sunday. Fishing was slow, and we only managed a grand total of 4 smallies between us for the whole weekend with me outfishing him 3 to 1. One of my fish came on a DT10 and the other 2 hit tubes, while my brother's fish hit a hair jig. I'm not sure how deep we were fishing because there's no electronics on the boat we use up there, but based on how high the water was and my knowledge of the lake from seeing it drawn down, I would estimate that most of our fish came out of 10-13 feet of water on a sloping sandy bottom interspersed with boulders and adjacent to deeper water. Here's pics of our 2 best fish: My brother's fish, caught on a hair jig My biggest fish for the weekend, caught on a Strike King bleeding tube
  14. I usually use braided line for jigs and soft plastics. I like 20# for spinning and 30# for baitcasting. I have spool of 50# that I am waiting to try on one of my baitcasters when I need a line change as well. Although it does fray and cut easily in rocks I still use it in rocky areas, I just tie on a few feet of mono leader. A lot of guys use fluoro for a leader instead, and I just bought some to try as leader material this weekend so we'll see how that goes.
  15. Kenai as in Kenai Alaska? I don't think you have bass up there, but its a great salmon fishery from what I hear. I've never been so I'm not sure what to recommend as far as gear, but talking to some local fisherman should be a good start.
  16. For me its because I like trying new things and having different options. Case in point, I currently own 4 baitcast reels from 4 different companies. I have a Daiwa, an Abu Garcia, a Shimano, and a BPS reel. I like all of them, and I wouldn't want all of my reels to be Shimanos any more than I would want them all to be BPS reels. For my next couple reel purchases, I'll probably try more different companies. Right now I'm leaning towards Lews and Ardent, but that could change. Another thing worth mentioning is that the name-brand gear can be very affordable if you wait for deals. All of my reels with the exception of 1 were purchased at some sort of discount, and the one exception over half the purchase price was paid with gift cards, which I consider to be almost the same thing as a discount.
  17. I have the Mojo 7'MHF casting rod that I use for plastics and jigs. I love mine and never understood the complaints about it being tip heavy until recently. Since I've had it, I've had a Daiwa Advantage on it, and the combo balanced really well for me. I recently got a BPS Carbonlite reel, which is about an ounce and a half lighter than the Advantage. I tried it out on the Mojo, and it did feel tip heavy with the lighter reel. To fix this so-called problem I just put the other reel back on it and decided to use the Carbonlite on a different rod. I still fish the Mojo/Advantage combo a lot and really like the way it fishes for plastics and jigs, but it seems to me that the reel can make a big difference with these rods.

    Grubs

I usually fish them on a 1/8-1/4 oz round jighead. I'll either crawl them on the bottom or swim them back. Vary the retrieve until you find something that works. I like the Zoom Fat Alberts.
  19. I bought a bag years ago, used them a few times and never caught anything. I probably didn't give them enough of a chance though. I don't really like using senkos or senko type baits for the most part, with the exception being a 3" senko on a dropshot, which I fish quite a bit. I still have that bag, maybe I'll give them another shot this weekend.
  20. I finished yesterday. I actually only had 1 final in my 4 classes this semester, but I had large projects or papers due at the beginning of this week in all the other ones.
  21. I read the same or a similar article, and the reasoning behind leaving line attached in cases where you absolutely can't get the hook out is because the drag created by the line moving through the water as the fish swims will pull the hook to one side and at least allow the fish to pass food through its gullet, whereas a hook left in a fish without line will often stay right in the middle and prevent the fish from swallowing food. That said, I've never gut hooked a fish so bad that the hook wouldn't come out using the method Catt posted, so learning how to do that should be your best bet in 99% of cases.
  22. I have a bunch of friends in their late teens/early 20's who have had it done. What your friend says about your eyes not being done changing doesn't make sense to me. I'm no eye doctor but it seems to me that no one's eyes are ever done changing. The problem is, they keep getting worse, not better.
  23. Casting or spinning?
  24. I'm very happy with who the Bills picked. Dareus was the guy I wanted in the 1st, but I didn't think he would be there so I'm really glad they were able to get him. At first I was scratching my head at all the DB's they picked, but a lot of their better DB's are old or are free agents or both so from that perspective it makes sense. I'm glad they focused so heavily on defense this year. The guy they got with their last pick in the 7th is an absolutely huge dude who is very athletic especially for his size. He wasn't on anyone else's radar because he's from a small, unknown school but if he pans out he could end up being the steal of the draft. Now I just hope I'll be able to see these guys on the field come September.
