  1. I was 7 for the first fish I remember catching, but my parents have pictures of me holding fish I caught when I was 3 or 4. it's kind of weird to me that I remember lots of things from when I was 3 or 4, but not fishing, even though I evidently did.
  2. Did you hear about the constipated mathematician? He worked his problems out with a pencil.
  3. Next time you get the urge to go to the tackle shop, go fishing instead. This should work until you break off enough that you need to stock back up, or until you're on the way to the lake and realize you forgot your spinnerbaits, and it'll be quicker to stop at the store to get a couple than to go all the way home, and then you walk in and last year's rods are on clearance...
  4. I think y'all misunderstood me, I'm looking for a paddle to go with the ping pong table! J/K, thanks for all the replies. I think I'll probably go the cheap route for now if weight is the major difference. I'm not afraid of a little extra exercise, and having never used a lighter paddle I won't know the difference anyway.
  5. I use a 7'6" Heavy, moderate-fast BPS bionic blade with an Abu Garcia Ambassaduer 6500 c3 as my swimbait/a-rig rod. Decent setup that wont break the bank. the rod is rated for weights 1 to 4 ounces, but to me it starts to feel a little underpowered over 3 ounces so you won't be able to throw some of the larger swimbaits with it.
  6. I knew what he was talking about as well, I have one of those no fun office jobs! Pops is a pipefitter though, musta picked up the language from him.
  7. I've been wanting to get a fishing kayak for a while. This weekend I went into Dick's looking for a ping pong table and went over to the fishing section while I was there. They had the Perception Sport Caster 12.5 on clearance, and I brought one home with me the next day ( I had to wait a day because there was no room on top of the car with the ping pong table up there). I can't wait to get this thing out on the water! I still need to get a paddle though. Any suggestions on that front? I don't really know what to look for in a paddle as far as length, blade style, etc. Would it be a huge mistake to just get the cheapest one I can find to start with?
  8. It sounds like your drag spring washers could be improperly installed. If that's the case it should be a relatively easy fix once you can get inside the reel, but if it were me and I paid someone else to service it and i got it back in a nonfunctional state I'd take it back and have them fix it.
  9. Depends. Are you still rockin' JNCO's from 1998?
  10. I cant speak to how the performance compares to a Revo since I'e never used one, But I have 5 low profile reels from various companies, and 2 Abu round reels (a 4600 C4 on my spinnerbait/lipless rod, and a 6500 C3 on my big bait rod). I can go back and forth between the low profile reels and the round reels without any issue. Sometimes if I've been fishing with one reel for a while, I find that switching to a different profile will actually be more comfortable, whether it be switching from low profile to round, round to low profile, or just switching between different low profile reels. The only minor issue I have had adjusting was when I first got the bigger reel on the big bait rod. I hesitated when I bought the C3 because I didn't think I would like not having the thumb bar, but I wanted the 5.3:1 gear ratio so I ultimately chose it over the C4 in the same size. When I first got it I did try to press the nonexistent thumb bar a few times due to muscle memory, but I quickly got accustomed to pressing the button on the top of the handle sideplate, and with a little practice I was able to learn to press the button and go straight into thumbing the spool in one motion. I do think that the 4000 size ambassaduers make great general purpose bass reels at their price point.
  11. I had a hunch this might be the case when I saw the knob on the 2000 size spinning reel was the same as the knobs on my Advantage baitcaster.
  12. Has anyone ever used St. Croix reels? I don't think I've ever even seen one in a store, but they have them on their website. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with these.
  13. I prefer baitcasters for a lot of techniques and use them more than my spinning combos overall, but I think I'd have to go with a spinning combo for the one rod only question. I could probably do most of what I prefer baitcasters for with a spinning combo, but there's certain lures I really like to use, like #5 shad raps or #9 and #11 original rapalas that I can't cast on any of my baitcasters. I think my combo of choice if I could only choose one would be a 6'6" MF spinning rod with a size 30 or 35 reel spooled with 20# braid on one spool and 8# mono on the other. (Another pro of a spinning combo is lots of reels come with spare spools so it's almost like having 2 combos).
  14. I have and use both. Once I'm actually fishing I don't care if its a one piece or a two piece. Most of my rods are one piece just because they are easier to find in anything but lower end rods, where I tend to see more 2 piece rods. That said, ever since this past summer when my wife and I went on vacation and we didn't have room in the car for my one piece rods, I've been looking for a couple higher quality 2 piece rods to have as car rods, and found a couple from st. croix in the premier and avid lines that I want to get. So to summarize, for selection in my preferred price point I prefer one piece, but for ease of transportation I prefer two piece.
  15. I decided to try to make some pumpkin spice boiled peanuts this weekend. Boiled them in salt water with cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and a little sugar. Turned out pretty good.
  16. Make sure you keep your thumb off the spool when reeling in. On one of my reels, the most comfortable palming position is with my thumb resting on the spool, and I have to make a conscious effort not to keep it there or else my thumb pushes the line away so it stacks on the opposite side of the spool.
  17. It was hungry.
  18. A rod builder might be able to build you a top half, but at that point you would probably be better off cost-wise just getting a new rod.
  19. EJ led a nice TD drive with less than 2 minutes left and no timeouts for the win. I like this guy so far.
  20. I use an Abu Garcia C4 4600 as my primary lipless reel. This reel has a 6.3:1 ratio. This reel is also my primary spinnerbait reel, so occasionally I throw the lipless cranks on a different combo if I want both tied on or only have 1-2 rods with me bank fishing, but they all have reels with gear ratios in the 6:1 range as well. I don't own any reels with a 7+ gear ratio, and I didn't really like throwing them on my Curado E5 the couple of times I tried it.
  21. I just bought a pack of these couple days ago and used one for the first time yesterday. I had it texas rigged and was fishing it in some pads in the pond in my apartment complex when my wife called. I got a hit while I was on the phone and I missed the hookset. I had only been fishing it for a few minutes when that happened, and the only other thing I've caught fish on in that pond so far is senkos, so that was enough to convince me that they could work in the right situation.
  22. Academy offers camo rods in their H20 express brand. I've never used one so I can't comment on the quality, other than to say they looked nice in the store when I saw them.
  23. One of the major selling points often used on this forum for encouraging people to save up for a higher quality reel than they say they are willing or able to spend is that if you properly maintain it, it'll last you forever. It sounds like you already have that high quality reel that lasts forever. Sure, it might not have some of the modern conveniences found on newer reels, but there's nothing wrong with that. Embrace it for what it is and keep fishing with it.
  24. I was encouraged by what I saw today. He made some good decisions and his stats would have been even better if not for some mistakes by his teammates like fumbles, penalties, and dropped passed that killed some drives. IMO the coaches also severely mismanaged the running backs. CJ Spiller struggled all day and it seemed like Fred Jackson gained 5 yards every time he got the ball, but they kept trying to feature CJ. In short, the offense had its share of issues but EJ was a bright spot. Not bad for a rookie in his first start.
