  1. I was once stuck behind someone who stopped before the plates in the road that trigger the light. Held up traffic for at least 5 minutes before they finally decided to inch up a bit, and the light changed within 10 seconds. :
  2. I have a team daiwa advantage 150H, which is basically the same as the black widow II but without the fancy paint job, and one less bearing. It is a solid reel for the money. I haven't used the asaro so I can't make a comparison, but i can recommend the daiwa.
  3. I'm surprised that so many people are mentioning the storm swimbaits. The 3 and 4 inch swim shads in the pearl and shad colors are some of my best producers. I will admit that I bought a pack of the 5 inchers in perch that I haven't caught anything on so far, but I remain optimistic that they will produce some bigguns in the right situation. My dumbest tackle purchase was probably when I was 12 or so, and first started getting into bass fishing somewhat seriously. I would read articles in bassmaster and other magazines and get convinced that i needed a separate combo for every lure in my box. Being 12, i didn't have a lot of money, but I spent my birthday money on 4 combos from kmart for about $20 each. I actually still use and like the ultralight i got back then, and my girlfriend, who is new to fishing, uses the zebco 33 i bought (when the magazines talked about baitcasting, i thought it meant the same as spincasting, it was a couple years later that i realized the difference). But other than those two things, all the other stuff got upgraded within a year or two when I had a little more money to work with and realized quality>quantity. These relics of my fishing past now collect dust in the corner of my bedroom.
  4. what about when the modulus rating is given in tons? how does that compare to a rating given in millions?
  5. I was seven years old. It was at my grandparents house on Great Sacandaga Lake. I was fishing with my dad, my dad's cousin-in-law, and his son. We were fishing out of my great uncle's aluminum 16' deep v with 4 benches and an old 30hp merc. It was crowded, but I didn't care because it was the first time I was allowed out in the boat to go fishing. I had a zebco 600 spincast combo with a live helgrammite rigged under a bobber. The first fish I caught was a rock bass. I didn't even see my float go under because i was getting bored. Luckily everyone else was paying attention. The next trip out I caught my first smallmouth, and I have been fishing ever since. I enjoy all types of fishing for all species, but fishing for smallies on that lake out of that old boat is still my favorite.
  6. http://stardate.org/nightsky/moon/index.php?month=3&year=2009&css=moon.css&Submit=Go I found this site by doing a google search on "moon phase calendar"
  7. It is not fair because every other way to qualify is open to everybody regardless of gender, but the WBT is only open to women. Men can't qualify through the WBT, but women can qualify through the opens, federation and elites. My friend thinks that maybe what you are getting at is the injustice in the idea of the seperation of the genders in the same sport. Maybe what you're really mad about is the fact that KBM and other women anglers have to qualify through a womans event instead of being able to show their skill in one inclusive qualifying event. I'm not mad about anything, I was just stating facts. Women have all of the same avenues of qualification open to them as the men do, but men cannot qualify through the WBT, because it is a womens tour. My personal opinion is that it will be good for the sport in the long run by encouraging participation among women. I hope to see the day where women compete in the elites, opens, and federation tournaments and qualify for the classic in comparable numbers to men, but for the time being reserving a spot for a woman is unfair. That said, I don't see a better alternative for getting women interested in the sport, I just hope that it is a temporary step toward an ultimate goal of equal participation of men and women at all levels of bass fishing.

  9. Has anyone used these lipless cranks? I picked up a couple out of the Gander Mtn. clearance bin a couple years ago, but haven't fished with them much, as I keep reaching for my rattlin rapalas and other lipless cranks I have already established confidence in instead. I was just wondering if anyone else has used them and how well they produced.
  10. I've found a lot of things I can't seem to find anywhere else at small, out of the way tackle shops. You will have to get a little off the beaten path to find these places, but they will often have things I haven't seen anywhere else in over 5 years, and the owner is usually friendly and helpful.
  11. What is the furry thing in the top right corner of your box?
  12. Meaningless. For $50,000 everyone on this Forum would fish any reel they were paid to promote, regardless of good or bad. Just about every reel looks and feels good right out of the box. That too is meaningless. 8-) I disagree. I would have a very hard time promoting a product I did not believe in, no matter how much I was offered, and I'm sure I'm not the only one on here who feels the same way. That being said, I have never been in that situation so I can't say for sure how I would react, and I also believe that all of the major reel companies have good products, BPS included.
  13. I don't buy into the red is invisible underwater thing, but I do know some people who prefer brightly colored lines because above water they are more visible to the angler.
  14. My advice: Don't wait. I said the same thing. I wanted to start a club but I kept pushing it aside. Now I'm about to graduate and too busy to have any time left for a club. You may end up regretting it if you put it off. x2
  15. where is "this?" I don't see a link in your post.
  16. The first time I am able to go after ice out each spring
  17. I've fished out of a canoe a lot, and everyone else has covered pretty much everything. Wind makes things more difficult, especially when fishing alone, but I've been out in some pretty rough water, just make sure you have some weight up front. I use a 5 gallon bucket and fill it with water before I launch. Obviously you have to limit your gear compared to a larger boat. I always tie the handles of my tackle bag to the cross brace and make sure i zip everything up after changing lures just in case I tip so I don't lose everything, but so far that hasn't been an issue. I have also been meaning to get some rod floaters for the same reason, but haven't gotten around to it. I would also recommend getting a flatback model in case you ever want to put a trolling motor or small outboard on it, just remember if you do that you will need to get it registered with the DMV just like any other boat with a motor.
  18. My brother has this line in 10# on a spinning combo, and I haven't heard him complain about it ever. I don't use his rod often but every once in a while we will trade and it seems to be good line from my limited experience. I also really like Triple Fish Camo escent line, I have it in 12# on one of my baitcasters. I'm not sure if the camo escent and the silicone are different lines or not though, other than one being camo.
  19. you could also try to cut a hole in the side of a reel grip like the ones posted in the link, slip that hole over one end, and stretch it over the other end, so you end up with the rosewood part covered and a hole in the reel grip where the rosewood part and the other part come together.
  20. You're thinking about this all wrong. the truck tire vs. civic tire example doesn't apply here, because the handle size does not change the gear size. a larger main gear will turn a pinion gear of the same size more times per turn of the main gear, which would be the equivalent of your tire analogy. Increasing the handle length will not have any effect on the size of the gears in relation to each other. What it will do is make it take longer to turn the handle one revolution because of the extra distance that needs to be covered vs. a shorter handle, so if you are reeling at your normal pace, you are actually turning less RPM's and reeling slower than you would with a shorter handle. A longer handle will give you more power though because of the added torque.
  21. My girlfriend informed me that my valentines day present was supposed to be a 7" MH st croix mojo. Unfortunately it is on backorder, but even so it should be here before ice out!
  22. i bought a pack and never used them, but after sitting in my box for three years i found they make good practice plugs for the backyard.
  23. I am from the Rochester area as well (Churchville for those who are familiar with it), but I spend most of the year except the summer at college in Geneseo.
  24. Just because I'm bored. Its about a 1/3 of the way down the page. http://www.state.me.us/ifw/laws_rules/fishing/openwater/index.htm That doesn't answer the OP's question, as selling and using are two different things. Here in NY it is illegal to sell lead weights under 1/2 oz. as well, but their use is not illegal.
  25. My first baitcasting reel, a Team Daiwa advantage 150H. normally retails for ~ $100, was marked down to 49.95, plus 50% off lowest marked price. So I got the reel for $25, plus i had a $20 gift card so I only spent $5 out of pocket.
