  1. Gloomis GLX-783-2C My weapon of choice for my Bank Fishing adventures.
  2. This what i do. First decide how much Braid or FC I will spool up (usually i use 50 yrds). Spool in the Braid/FC first then the backing. Fill it up till you reach your target fill level then cut. Remove all the line then reverse (Backing first then Braid/FC). I put a masking tape on the knot between the two lines then continue to spool. I always designate the line type, lbs rating, Diameter, brand of line on each reel so to eliminate the need to respool new backing. 50 yrds of 20lbs Sufix PB on the 1001XT 50 yrds of 30lbs Sufix PB on the CU201I
  3. I use this one http://www.daiichiseiko.com/news/kosoku_recycler/kosoku_recycler.html
  4. Is your line like a slinky, if it is its called line memory - Use more manageable / quality Mono/FC line or lower your line rating. Otherwise use braid. Is your line coming to life and wraps itself or "Twists" into a tangled mess ? This is line twist (more prominent on spinning reels) Use a good swivel, get a quality spinning reel with a well designed twist reduction system (Ball bearing line roller, spool design etc), learn the proper way to fight a fish. Otherwise use braid, its not immune to line twist but it is more resilient than mono and FC.
  5. Foot Patrol Angler here I too bring 1 - spinning and 1-casting combos. There are situations that casting gear is the right/better tool for the job. Flipping heavy cover, frogs, A-rigs etc. Take your time learning to use the casting gear and continue fishing with your spinning gear. If the need arises use it.
  6. My lightest is 20lbs Sufix PB (0.20mm i think) on my CQ51 and 1001xt for light or weightless pitching/flipping. 30lbs on the standard 200 sized reels.
  7. Whoa ! those are monsters. Another option is cutting the 3rd hook on normal treble hooks.
  8. Yup they work. Much less chances of injury to fish and fisherman. Usually I buy the next size up based on the original trebles to compensate for the weight balance of the lure. Also, try double hooks much easier to install on lures and usually does not need additional split rings.
  9. Ouch !!! I know how that feels. Got whacked on the arm by a buddy during a fishing trip. The welt took days to disappear.
  10. When i bank fish i always try to avoid using treble hook lures for 2 reasons, 1. Its always get snagged and 2. When trying to free it a 100 mph lure with 2 to 3 treble hooks flying back towards you. I always swap them for a single or double hook models to reduce the snagging and prevent further injury to people and fish.
  11. If can be saved by repairing, Repair it and keep it as a backup rod. If cannot be repaired, keep it as a parts donor for future rod repairs. I usually pickup old broken rods when somebody throws them away and strip the parts. (guides, hook keepers, seat parts, blanks etc).
  12. I use braid + FC leader most of the time. The Banks around I fish is usually lined with weeds or lotus. Braid helps a lot to cut those weeds when a fish is on. Aside from Bass there are also monster snakeheads where I fish and Braid is the key to yank them out along with about 5 lbs of weeds. The only time I use mono or FC is when I'm in open water.
  13. Suggest you get a new one and use the old one as practice reel for your DIY maintenance study. It will help you understand the inner workings of the reel and gain more confidence in opening up future reels. If you can get it back running you will have 2 reels on your arsenal and that is always good. I did the same thing on an old baitcaster that was acting up. I got a new one then practiced on the old one and got her back running smoothly again (after the nth try hahaha).
  14. red bellied piranha Kidding Aside. Looks very close to a green sunfish.
  15. I use a plastic zipped envelop (use for documents). I just keep the soft plastics in their bags and store them along with others inside the envelop.
  16. Go JDM they have a few good selections of 6'6" Medium with moderate action either in 1pc or 2pcs.
  17. That is a spoon ?...Is more like a shovel Kidding aside. That is one big spoon. Looks like you need a combo similar for an a-rig or swimbait to cast that thing.
  18. I make my own Beetle spins using stainless wire, ball bearing swivels, Owner Jig heads and various blades. I also tie flash on them for added appeal. They are the most productive lures I use and bass go gaga over them.
  19. or the new 2014 curado just released this last Feb.
  20. Since your going to your first ever big fishing adventure and expecting to battle with monster fish I suggest to change it so you will have the "confidence thing" that you have brand new line but... Don't throw away the old lines you can still use them for your normal fishing or other future reels (or use them as backup during the trip). Test the new lines you will use during the trip for any defects or the dreaded bad batch of spool issue. Also check all your terminal gear Hooks, lures, split rings, swivels etc. Its your first major fishing trip so make the most of it. Contact the guide or charter on what gears you need to prepare so you be well equipped for the trip.
  21. For most of my terminal tackle (hooks, swivels, weights) i try to avoid using expensive ones (unless I don't have a choice or for tournament use). Those the the things that we always lose to snags, break-offs, toothy critters and the usual birds nest cast offs. For fun, everyday fishing just use the best quality ones that are priced just right or from clearance sales.
  22. There are a few 160-ish curado I's on ebay. Got mine with a good price.
  23. I use a regular nike Back pack with a few separate compartments. In the main compartment are: - a rain coat -1 tacklebox (Cranks, Beetle spins, jigs frogs) -1 Spinnerbait, buzzbait folder (similar to a CD/DVD case) -2 Backup reels (one BC and one spinning just in case of a breakdown) -1 small tackle box for a few terminal tackle (hooks, weights, swivels, beads etc) -a plastic zippered folder for a few bags of go to softplastics (i use the laptop sleeve for them) In the second compartment: - tools (pliers, scissors, first aid kit, etc) I modify the pen holders to fit them with velcros and bigger pockets. - small spool of leader (i use small flyfishing tippet spools for a few yards of leader material) - extras that i need depending on the weather, or fishing conditions and fishing location (small bug spray, sunscreens etc) Side Bottle pockets for water and food. MP3/Phone pocket (mostly on the top of the bag where the straps meet) for MP3/iphones. Small pocket for the wileys and a small notebook with pen. A face towel with a clip for wiping the hands, gear of unwanted dirt or too much slime. Try to avoid using too big backpacks, using smaller backpacks will force, teach you to bring all the essentials and really make you study the water and the gears you will need.
  24. YES I mostly bank fish (similar to BassinLou). Gloomis GLX 783-2C Rod with a 51 sized shimano reel (CQ51 or 1001xt) spooled with either 20 or 30lbs braid. It can handle both light weight softplastics and other lures (spinners, cranks. jigs etc.) I also carry a back-up 2-piece spinning rod with 4lbs mono or FC just in case the fishes are too finicky or easily spooked and might need a more stealthy approach.
  25. Anyone opened up their curado I's lately ? Like to inquire about Part # 4117 (Level Wind Bushing). Is this part upgradable with a bearing ? If yes, what bearing size do we need ? Hoping to get my Curado I in a week or two and now listing possible upgrade, pimps etc for this reel. Thanx
