  1. Bending the hooks a little bit does help, just don't get carried away. Also on them Spros shorten the skirt up some may help. I actually cut at least a inch or more off the Spro's. You don't have to spend a fortune on a frog rod, although it does help to have a rod made for frog fishing, but you can find a 7ft MH to heavy rod under 50 bucks to get you by, but I have to agree with most a med action rod is not going to land you many frog bass. As far as waiting goes, before setting the hook, I have had days where a quick hook set worked but others where waiting several seconds was the ticket. If the bass really wants the frog and you added some megastrike to help out, he will hold on longer then you can possibly stand it. I would start with a slow 3 count and go from there.
  2. For me top waters will work all day long from mid spring to late fall, you just have to put them in the right places. The shady side of any cover for example and hard to reach places such as a big overhanging tree. Cast them to your target and let them sit there until all the ripples are gone and then work them slow with pauses. There also great when the bass are away from shore busting shad to the surface or if you have some structure down deep, a lot of times bass will suspend above such and can be called up with a top water. For the river fisherman, eddies are prime targets for top waters, anything that breaks up the current is a good place to throw a top water. The down current side of Logs, big rocks and such. The key is to work them slow and to keep them in the strike zone as long as possible. However with that said, having a backup plan for those times when they just won't hit the surface is a good idea. No lure that I know of catches bass 100 percent of the time, so it's always good to have something else ready to go. Like others have said, early and late may be the best times for fishing on top, but they will also work anytime of day if your fishing in the right places. Hope that helps.
  3. I believe, well at least some of them are using a product called bass wax on there crankbaits. It comes in a container like chap stick. Bio Edge also has a chap stick type container. However Megastrike works great for me and stays on the crankbait for a very long time.
  4. I have several of the 08 models and a few 09 models. Have not had one problem with any of them. Great reels IMO.
  5. Very nice catch. Congrats!
  6. Hum, I would have to go with the Spro Bronzeye Popper Frog.
  7. I have to admit that after using Super Braid for years, Sonic was giving me fits on and off. but now that I have gotten use to this line, I am really starting to like it. Still will not say that it is better then Super was, but it's growing on me.
  8. 381? I have a couple of the EX301P models. Bought them new many years ago and there still kicking bass today without any issues. I still use these for cranks even though I have at least 8 Energy's an 6 or 7 Tour PT's. Just can't beat that 4.4:1 for deep cranks. Dang Quantum hatters know nothing of what they speak, but that's okay, more for me.
  9. I am one of the old timers, well I am only 43 but, been fishing with G.Loomis rods for as long as I can remember, early 80's, and I actually prefer the IMX over the GLX. However the last GLX I bought was back when they first came out and a slight whisper would snap the blank in half. I know they have fixed that issue since then, although I still don't think there as strong as IMX rods, but at them prices I have just stuck with IMX or GL3 rods and could not be happier. With that said, there's probably no way on earth that I am going to be able to stay away from the New Loomis GLX frog rods. Well unless of course there as bad as the old model frog rod or if they put them goofy recoil guides on them. I prefer SIC when it comes to braid fishing and nothing goes better with braid then Mr. Froggy.
  10. From what I hear they also have a upgraded Certified Pro in the works. Now that Shimano is taking a strong foot hold over at Loomis. Lamiglas may just be my new rod of choice. There certified pro rods are very good rods.
  11. Works great on Mono and Flouro. Have not used it much on Braid, have not seen the need to. One other good thing about it with Flouro especially, but mono or braid to, is if you use it on your knot as your tying it, you will get a good solid knot.
  12. Don't have an Avid but the G-Loomis 845 is one heck of a good crankbait rod.
  13. I vote IMX also. However if Gary Loomis is really back in the biz with another company, well if anyone can make a better rod it be him, but until that time IMX get's my vote.
  14. Vicious Ultimate!
  15. Well since you don't fish anymore, just send me over the MegaStrike your not using and I will take care of it. LOL
  16. I use both MegaStrike and Edge Hot Sauce Gel. I never really believed scents did much more other then taste. However I have always believed it was possible for a scent to do more then just that, but have not seen it until now for this year MegaStrike has proven to me that's there's more to it then that. It has turned followers into strikers. If the bass are following your lure but not taking it, trust me, add a little Strike and hold onto your rod. I do however still keep the Edge Hot Sauce Gel with me also, simply because my two biggest bass have come while using it, however I have no proof they hit because of the sauce, but I got a feeling my new personal best is just around the corner and that she will have MegaStrike tattooed on her butt, simply because I have seen with my own eyes, not because someone said or some pro promotes it, what this stuff can do. It's no magic potion, you still have to be fishing in the right place at the right time with the right presentation, but if you do that and add the Strike to your lure, well I have seen it turn lookers into hookers, so to speak. In fact I have seen them not really want the frog I was throwing, yet once I added the Strike, it was more then they could take, for they just hammered the frog they where not interested in seconds before without the strike added. The stuff works, period! And for me to say that about any scent, well I am pretty sure hell is freezing over at this very moment. LOL
  17. Holy Smoke! Godzilla is for real! What a catch! BTW I guess this means Florida strain Bass can make it in cold waters. Florida, Load up the tankers and get moving those bass to IL will you!! HEHE
  18. Pitching this thing is killer but I have also been having real good luck swimming them a ft or two under the surface. I rig them up Texas style and work it at a steady medium pace. When I come up to some cover I let drop down right next to it or into it. This has allowed me to cover a lot of water and then slow down when need be. The action of the legs on this bait is killer. In the 20 some years I have been bass fishing I have never seen anything like it. I have had many just hammer it while it was swimming and many just clobber it on the fall. By far one of the best soft plastic bait I have ever used.
  19. Ditto! They did have a issue when it first came out, but they have long fixed it and Vicious is all I use now when it comes to Flouro. There Ultimate Co-Poly is also some real good line.
  20. well designed by spro LOL, it looks basically the same as the bronzeye. :-? pretty much i have some of these only big difference is a check valve type drain on the mad maxx and it has a keel type head Plus tungsten rattles.

  22. I have used a few different braids and they all seem to dig in at some point, however I have never had Stren Super or Sonic break on me. PP on the other hand has broken on me several times, including on the cast, one of which sent my 20 dollar BBZ to the bottom of the sea, so I don't use it anymore. I know it's a favorite of a lot of folks, but I personally have zero confidence in it. Suffix will also dig in at times, but seems like a good line. Never had it break on me, but at the same time I have not used it much to give it a 100%. Spiderwire has broken on me also, but unlike the PP of which was 50lb test, the Spiderwire I tried was only 20 lbs test. not really and excuse, but it happened none the less. Bottom line is no line is perfect, but some are better then others. Change brand and see if that helps.
  23. Have only caught one on the BBZ so far. Have had a couple in clear water just hit it with there nose on the side of the bait, but they did not take it. I am thinking during the Fall Shad bite it will be better.
  24. Oh Come On!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Make it stop!!!! My wife is going to kill me! I think these companies out there know I am a sucker for a frog and therefor keep making new models for they know I am going to buy them. I might as well just hand over my check book to the tackle shop. I am hoping one of them will let me sleep on the back room floor because if this keeps up I know my wife is going to kick me out the door. LOL They look good and with rattles to boot.
  25. Taking one lure with me and learning everything I can with it is how I started out bass fishing 20 some years ago. It was the advice of a friend of my step dad's of whom was a pretty successful local tournament fisherman at the time. Yes it was very frustrating watching others catch fish while I was learning that one bait at a time, but it has definitely paid off in the long run. I used that same advice to learn bait casting gear, using nothing but for days on end. Same advice I used to fish different cover, spending days on end working nothing but wood cover, then days on end working nothing but the weeds and so forth. The key is not weather or not your catching fish, it's the learning of how, when, where and why's. Sure it's a slow process and pretty dang frustrating to say the least, but like anything else, if you put in the time, hard work and pay attention to details, sooner or later it will pay off. The best part is, once you learn how to use very well a few lures, it becomes easier to learn more and more.
