Congratulations. On June 18th it will be 55 years for my wife and me. The best catch of my life.

You own the boat. You may/can be held responsible for injuries/deaths and losses due to someone else's actions. I don't think I could get a good night's sleep being responsible for someone else's actions. A few years ago, a local U.S. congressman rented a sailboat and abandoned it rather than returning it according to the terms of the rental contract. He just tied it to a dock and walked away. It was a good sized sailboat, not just a "puddle jumper". It became a nightmare for the owner of the boat. He got a bill from the boat yard where it was abandoned for mooring or dock rental space. The marina would not turn it over to the owner until the bill was paid. I addition to the licensing mentioned by an earlier poster, you may need to have a licensed operator on the boat. That will vary according to state regs.

There is an old expression about getting a rent a car. "Drive it like you stole it." That is said as a joke, but if there wasn't a nugget of truth in it, it wouldn't be funny. The first person you need to talk to is your insurance man.

Lacquer and gel coat are two different things.

Never heard of white metalflake. Do you mean silver? But, here's an application guide from Metalflake. Hope it helps. Notice they are using clear acrylic, not gel coat. Gel coat is fine when it is sprayed into a mold since orange peel is not a problem. Applying gel coat as a final coat will result in an industrial grade grapefruit peel. If I left a boat in the water for extended periods, in addition to a cover, I'd also put an automatic bilge pump in the lowest, accessible spot where water can accumulate. Cheap insurance, should the cover fail, for whatever reason.

Two words. Dielectric grease.

I have a lawn edger with a Briggs & Stratton engine. I had never added any type of fuel treatment until...………... In the spring, my edger would not start, no matter what I did. I changed the spark plug, and still nothing. I finally dumped all the old fuel out of the machine and topped it off with fresh fuel. It started right up. From that point on I added Stabil to the fuel for the yard power tools. The edger has started up every time in the spring, using the fuel that was left in the tank from the prior year. Any fuel that goes in the boat, the lawn mowers, the chain saw, the grass trimmer, the combo lawn mower/snow blower, and the generator get fuel that is treated with Stabil Marine. Never had a problem. Never changed a spark plug in any of the equipment. It works for me.

Your best bet to fill the scratch is to use a clear gel coat. You didn't say that the scratch went through the white, so a clear gel coat is your best bet. Fingernail polish, while okay for touch up is not as durable as gel coat. Build the repair a little higher than the surrounding surface. Once it has cured use a 1200 wet or dry sand paper to remove the excess (higher) material. Then use a slow buffer with a mild rubbing compound to restore the gloss that sanding removed. Once done, finish with a good wax.

There's a trick to that. Most canoes have the rear seat close to the stern, causing the bow to run very high. When fishing solo in the canoe swap ends and make the stern your bow. The canoe will balance much better. The "bow seat" is much closer to the center of the boat, so using it as the stern seat will keep the canoe on a more even keel.

Odd indeed. It occurs to me that the original poster has nothing but a passing knowledge/familiarity with boats. Getting into one of those rigs or getting it on the road behind a tow vehicle is begging for trouble. My thought is that if the op wants a boat that's comfortable and roomy enough to take the kiddies fishing from time to time, then a party barge would serve quite well. It wouldn't require such a stout tow vehicle, it won't draw much water and a few dings or dents won't be traumatizing.

One suggestion. Be sure that you have someone familiar with type of throttle you have when negotiating tricky waters.

And there is your simplest, most cost efficient way of holding your position.

Then I channel the dogbone in me and go beyond throwing everything in the kitchen sink at them. If nothing produces fish, I'll try the kitchen sink. Dogbone misunderestimates his mo jo. The reason I caught more fish the other day was that I stuck with one bait that was working for me that day, a wacky rig. Occasionally I'd try a Ned rig, but after a few casts it was back to the wacky. While I was catching fish, Doggy was trying a variety of baits. There is nothing wrong with that, and on some days that will work. And when it does that one bait will last all day unless you hang it on the bottom, unlike going through a few packs of plastics. A true test of mo jo would have been if we were both using the same bait. Last year I was fishing with JE1946 in the same area. I was casting the wacky rig and John was casting a long ten inch swimbait rigged weedless. After he caught three or four fish to my single, I "borrowed" one of John's baits, and voila, I began catching fish at a much faster rate.

Could be wrong, but I've seen some of the Major League Fishing boats with Bass Cat decals/stickers on them. Notice on the console and at the stern. The boarding ladder on the stern. near the power pole is not a Nitro product. I have owned a Z-7 and currently own a Z-8. There is a huge difference in the ride and stability between the two. I haven't priced them lately, but imagine the new equivalent of the Z-8 is considerably more expensive. I don't think you can get any Nitro with a two stroke engine, unless it's a left over.

It occurs to me that if you take it out of the compartment and set it on top, it's no longer flush with the level of the deck.

Keep in mind most gel coats used in boating are meant to have the laminate applied when the gel coat gets tacky. They are formulated to cure slowly when exposed to air. When applied as you are going to do there is a "wax" that is mixed with the gel. When applied, the wax rises to the surface preventing it from being exposed to the air. Without the wax it could take days for the gel coat to get past the tacky stage. During construction you want the gel coat to remain tacky. The components then have a chemical bond, not just an adhesive bond. The downside to the wax is that should you want to put on additional coats, you'll need to remove that layer of wax. Should you decide you want to apply a couple of coats, forego the wax in the first coat.

Get a gel coat with an ultra violet inhibitor. It's usually known as marine clear. Your everyday clear gel coat does not have uv protection.

My experience with S Watuppa is that it's not worth a mile to a mile and a quarter drive to fish that pond. I've had a few good days, but not enough to keep me goinjg back there with any regularity. Every time we drive by it on our way to Fall River, or other points west my wife will check to see if anyone is on the pond. It's a rare day to see any boat on the pond. There has to be some reason for that. The pond used to be crowded with boaters of all ilk on the pond. But no more. One good thing. It's definitely not over fished.

Our roads, boat ramps, and highways are cluttered with litter. Plastic bottles, containers, etc. are seen along our roadways despite our best efforts to keep them collected. Yesterday it occurred to me that losing scratch tickets rival all the other trash along our highways and byways. So, we have personal trash littering our country, but precious little has been said or done regarding governmental, losing scratch tickets. I have a simple, common sense solution. Why not make losing scratch tickets out of material that would make them usable as toilet paper. Looks like a win/win to me.

Pay attention to the trailer's wheel bearings and other components that salt water can damage. When it comes to electrical connections dielectric grease is your friend. I don't use my boat in salt water but I liberally apply the grease to all plug in connectors. That includes the running lights as well as the trailer's connections, and the plug for the trailer/vehicle connector.

Natural gas all the way. When I was a kid, back in the 40s, I can remember a commercial on billboards by the oil companies. Gas had a slogan. Go modern, go gas. The oil companies took advantage of the wording and on billboards they had, "Go modern. Go gas. Go boom" The billboards didn't last long. The gas company sued the oil companies and a judge ordered the oil companies to remove those ads. Here are the advantages to gas. If you don't have it, you'll need an electric range and an electric clothes dryer. Gas will save many dollars in the short or the long run. And you may need an electric hot water heater as well, though you can incorporate hot water into the heating system. Gas furnaces do not need an annual servicing to keep it clean and efficient. No need to have a storage facility on your property like you do for oil.
