  1. Both lines get buried into the spool dependong on how much pressure was applied. If you're now starting off with a BC I suggest mono as its alot easier to take out (untangle) when you have a birds nest or the line buries.
  2. I've used the same popper on both spinning and baitcast and I've found I get better sound and action out of it with my baitcaster. Cast, let it sit for about 20 seconds.. (be patient) then leave a bit of slack on the line and give it a quick jerk then pause for a few seconds then repeat. Patience and slow retrieves have worked great for me with poppers
  3. I agree. I'm trying to learn without the brake so when I get good I'll have nothing to worry about.
  4. I've tried mono and braid. Im still learning how to use a baitcaster so hopefully my answer helps you out. Braid: Great line, a bit easier to cast as it doesn't want to lift off the spool as easily, but when you do get a backlast be very careful as its hard to take out, and if you pull to hard on it, you'll get stuck even wrose from it digging down to far. Mono: I've used alot of different once, but I've found trylene Smooth Casting to be the best, 12 pound test. Great line, easy to cast and cheap. Cheap is a must right now as you may have to change lines a few times when first learning to use a bait caster. Try the trylene you'll like it.
  5. Hey, I was in the same boat as you about 3 days ago. Check out my previous thread created, (bait caster braking question). I followed all the advice in there and now I'm casting alot better, not as far as my spinning reel yet, but that will come with time. I've also found with a baitcaster I can cast far alot more easy, with my spinning i had to whip it, with my bait caster I just lob it. My advice, start with the brakes on, then cast a few times, then lower the brake, then cast again you should notice a difference in the distance. Good luck
  6. Hey everyone, just wanted to say thanks to every who replied to my thread (baitcaster braking question). Unfortunately that one went astray so I just created this one to say thanks, I took everyones advice and put it all together and within' 2 days I'm much better now. I'm casting out spinners and tubes 30-40 feet easily, now with no brakes at all. I still get backlashes but I'm training my thumb to know when to slow down the spool, and my casting technique has changed also. Once again thanks everyone for your great advice and help!
  7. ^ Great to know thanks, I think I may even have a defective unit, as my drag doesn't hold tight anymore, on the tightest setting I can still pull out drag. Also I'm seeing the lubrication you're talking about
  8. I do have it set right, lure falls extremely slowly. Even tried putting it a bit tigther so taht the lure doesn't fall unless i wiggle the rod. Then even tried a bit looser, same result
  9. Tried different lines and different weights.. Even tried braided. The thing is I can't figure out when its turning into a birds nest as soon as the lure starts flying though the air, not even when its slowing down, even just about 10 feet away from the rod tip the birds nest start. I tried again today and exact same results
  10. Quantum Tour PT Yup, adjusted the tension knob so that the lure is slightly falling, even tried putting it a bit tighter. Even tried every setting on the braking system. tried basically everything. While casting tried slightly keeping my thumb on the line, and that still doesn't help. Line spool in mid air! NO FUN
  11. Dear Mr. Baitcaster, You win, I give up. Its been a straight week night and day praticing, I've even stood outside infront of my house on the road at night time praticing casting. I've read every article I could find, watched every video I could find, tried every setting prossible and still out of 60 casts I get 60 birds nest. From a 10 feet cast to a 40 feet cast I get birds nest. The problem is not putting my thumb down intime to stop the line, becasue I end up getting a birds nest while the lure is flying through the air. No I'm not whipping the reel to cast i'm doing soft and smooth lobs and still the same thing happens. A baitcaster is not for me, its not gone into storage until further notice. Maybe for the rest of the year who knows.
  12. Went out in the front of my house tonight to pratice a little. Put a light drop shot weight onto the end of my line about 1/4 ounce then began doing short casts. I think out of 20 casts I had 18 birds nest =(. Set all my brakes and tension knobs okay as per the tutorial. Trying to convince myself to keep trying instead of breaking it lol
  13. I use braid on my spinner, but when finesse fishing, I will add on a floro leader.
  14. ^read that plus alot of other posts on this forum. I just have to keep practicing. I know all the basics
  15. Welcome As stated a 6'6 or 7' medium action spinning rod, is good to start off with. A few crankbaits, different colors, some soft plastics, I like the pink worms, they've worked well for me, and top water pop-r's. Nothing like seeing a fish jump up at a top water. Also if you can get a zara spook(puppy) those are really good to. Good luck
