  1. Ok Micro, can you swap spools like you can gears? In other words can I get the ext regular and put a pro spool in?
  2. Micro I knew you would know, you are the round reel guru!!! lol, After reading this I'm going to order the regular EXT in the 5:3 and put the handle of the EXT Pro on the regular EXT for crank baits, and use the regular handle on the Pro on the power rod. Makes it a lot easier, thanks fellas.
  3. Called Abu Garcia today and asked about changing gears in one of the EXT's I have, (starting a good collection btw they are discontinued so if you want one get it now). Anyway they sell the gears to change the ratio from 6:5 to 5:3, which is more comfortable for crankin. Is this changeover something an inept mechanically declined person can do? Or should I send the reel in and have them do it? Or just buy the regular 5600EXT which already has the 5:3, but three less bearings? I am assuming the bearing count is two for the handle and and extra for the antireverse, but have not confirmation of that yet. Thoughts?
  4. The Extreme reels come in so many variations that it is confusing to people. If you are looking for a general purpose reel and you like the Extremes (just ordered the finesse model yesterday) that you can do most of your fishing with get an etx10hfb, it is a general duty reel that will allow for the most versatility and has a flipping switch to boost. The 10 series are the general size bc, the 20's are higher capacity and the 05's are finesse. Good Luck. FWIW I would go ahead and get the extreme and pair it up with the KVD signature series rod, they are on sale now too, I don't think that during the Classic (last weekend in Feb-2nd weekend in March) that you will be able to pick up a Extreme combo for less than 130 bucks, the above described combo will cost 110 without shipping. Good Luck
  5. Another reason I went with the bc setup is the rod, it is much stiffer than my medium fast spinning rod. I felt that I was losing to many fish from poor hooksets, hopefully the stiffer rod will cure that. Why is it that spinning tackle rated fast are so flexible?
  6. They are only 12995 new, 2 years old I would offer at least 2grand less than what he is asking. here is the link to the tracker website with the boat http://www.trackerboats.com/boat/?boat=2998 You can also look up the value of the boat here http://www.nadaguides.com/default.aspx?LI=1-24-38-5697-0-0-0&l=1&w=24&p=38&f=5698&m=1674&d=1600246752&y=2007&ml=T&gc=MR&gtc=MR BTW the average retail is 7000 good luck
  7. How about when fishing a pork trailer, should I use my megastrike then? I put megastrike on everything, my cranks, spinners, jigs, everything but the boat. But I purchased some paca chunks and they have anise and pork fat in the plastic, should I also apply the megastrike to those? Thanks
  8. I had already purchased two 1/2 ounce sizes that I plan to use in the lake. I think I'll stick with the bullet weights for the river, those little crevices in the rocks are hard on line and rigs anyway. I would hate to lose a 3 dollar weight.
  9. I wanted to update my post on my experience with Strike King, after recieving Chris' email last week I figured that he would send me the skirt that I first asked for. However I recieved today 3 spinner baits in the size and color that was defective, a hat, and the new catalogue. Very quick and good customer service, I'm happy that this post was started as it has changed my attitude about SK's customer service and their product.
  10. Do these things work? I think they are a little pricey at 3.25 a piece, but if they really don't get hung up it would be worth it. Anybody use them? I fish a rock bottom snag infested river often and a lot of standing flooded timber, always looking for some way to loose less rigs.
  11. I was finally able to get up with the local pro, he is a great guy and never tries to push any product. I was picking his brain for information and he was pretty willing to share what he knows. He grew up using baitcasters and says that he can't get the hang of spinning reels. Anyway long story short he has two of the BPS Ext 05's on $300 G-Loomis rods, for his purposes the set up is great, nobody is more suprised than he is about liking the BPS reel. BTW he classifies himself as a finesse fisherman, last year he had some trouble with his combo's and he picked up the reels in a hurry at a local BPS affiliate. Most of his combos are Shimano G-Loomis combos, and he stated that the little 05 series were decent reels and casted light weights really well, 35 yds with a 1/8 ounce finesse jig. After conversing with him I really had the bug, so tonight I ordered the 05 series extreme and combined it with the KVD signature ML/F rod. I can't wait to get my hands on the combo and do some practicing, I also ordered some 8lb test hybrid to spool with. Thanks for the suggestions and sharing your knowledge.
  12. KVD suggests that all your rods be of the same manufacturer. Right now I have three Quantum rods and 2 BPS rods. If I'm crankin it's a BPS rod, anything else is Quantum. Good luck and btw that is a great looking fish on your avatar.
  13. My crankin rods are unidirectional graphite, they are responsive, sensitive and have the right amount of action. I hear a lot about sensitivity in regards to crankin, but it isn't the same as jiggin, wormin, etc. After a while you begin to pick up what your bait is doing, slight pressure that increases and you are getting near an obstacle, hard ticks hitting hard bottom, instant slight pressure grass, instant hard pressure that takes off with your lure, a fish, lol. seriously as far as crankin goes, I would take the less expensive of the two and save the money to put toward your jig, worm or finesse rod, these applications are where sensitivity really comes into play. Good luck Nick. BTW I didn't answer at first due to not having first hand knowledge of the rods you mentioned. FWIW I noticed you are looking at bps stores, they just put the KVD Signature Crankin rod on sale for 59.99, that is what I would buy.
  14. Hope you enjoy the new reel
  15. Thanks so much, I have checked and rechecked the ohm on the charge coil resistance I know it is good. I will recheck everything tomorrow as long as the weather is still good, Thanks again.
  16. Wow thanks so much Way2slow. I have a friend who is a automotive mechanic and has all the correct meters and stuff. Reading the manual is like reading greek for me, I did call a repair shop today and after my friend has a crack at I will take it there unless we can fix it. FWIW I don't have spark on any cylinder, and two power packs.
  17. Just called the parts store and was told that Johnson stators just don't go bad. When I described what was going on he was at a loss, but still adamant that it wasn't the stator.
  18. BPS has a good sale going on right now, I can get the ProLite for 69 or the Extreme for 49, from the descriptions the reels are similar to the point of being the same with the exception the the Prolite has duraaluminim gears and the Ext has brass. Does any one have first hand experience with these reels that can give some advice as to how good of a reel they are?
  19. alright this is my current "light" a m/f rod rated for 1/4-3/4 weights with an accurist PT reel. So if I go with a lighter rod rated for 1/8 weights, will I still need a reel. BTW I'm looking at the prolite and then the extreme 05, which from the descriptions look basically like the same reel.
  20. No I used Marine 90weight stuff, I call it tranny fluid because of the color.
  21. The motor is a two cycle, so no engine oil to check for water. I will pull the covers and check the head tomorrow. As far as the fluids, I forgot to drain the gear case, so the tranny fluid was stored in the lower unit. As far as the rest drained, etc.
  22. I have two problems with my engine currently, one is no spark the other is no water. I have isolated the spark issue to a bad stator, it is putting out 120volts on one side and 75 on the other, supposed to be 150. The coils will not kick in until the voltage is up near 150 volts. The water issue I think is due to the water supply line being broken somewhere in the lower unit. The water goes through the pump out and half way up the lower unit out the correct outlets, but it leaks around the gasket between the gear box and the upper part of the lower unit. Is it possible for the water line to bust, it was leaking before winter set in and I'm getting around to getting it fixed. Or is it just the seal being bad? I will drain the fluid tomorrow and see what color the fluid in the gear box is, that will tell me if there is water in the gear box as well. Any suggestions would be great. Does anyone think this could be a busted head?
  23. x2 on the EXT Pro, I got one recently and think it is an awesome reel. I can cast down to 3/8 ounce easily and 1/4 with effort, I usually go to the spinning reel for anyting under 3/8 anyway. As far as palming the reel, the ext pro is easily palmed. Good luck
  24. It is what I'm doing now and the more I think about it, it is probably what I'll end up staying with., BTW thanks for the tip on the spool settings on my EXT, I think that reel is awesome. In fact bought another one yesterday.
  25. I have been experimenting with casting my set ups with differing amounts of weight. I have found that when I get down to 5/16 ounce of weight or so the baitcasters just don't cut it anymore. I have looked around and I know there are finesse type of baitcast reels out there, Shimano 50mg, BPS Prolite, Extreme 05, and the Wally Marshall Crappie special. Is there any reason to build a total set up around one of these reels to use lures that hardly ever get out of my tacklebox anyway? I cast senkos on baitcasters, and most weightless plastics, with in reason. I can get my Accurist to cast within 10 feet of what my spinning reel will cast a 3/16 ounce bait. I am just wondering how many fellow ***atics have a dedicated light bait bc set up? And what reel do you use?
