  1. Every time a large fish is kept there is the inevitable discussion on it should have been released, I agree. However, we never stop to think about why it wasn't released. I would lay 50 to one odds that the young man in the picture didn't even know that an accurate fiberglass replica could be made. I am continually amazed how many sportsmen are unaware that quality replicas are available. I was talking with my doctor the other day and she was relating how her son is now consumed with fishing, and that he was distraught because their freezer broke and he lost a fish that was waiting to get mounted. I told her to just get a replica made, she had no idea, that wasn't too suprising as nobody outside the child fished, but when I tell my uncle that he should have released his 10lber (LM) and got a replica he had no idea they were even available. I have had other people think that the replica wouldn't look like their fish or that it would look "fake". After a quick web search and pictures they quickly change their minds. I honestly believe the reason fishermen keep trophies to mount do so because they are unaware of the alternative available with a quality replica, even to the point of custom painting the fish to match pictures that you provide. I think we as sportsmen can and should do a better job at educating the part time recreational fisherman about replica mounts. Tight lines
  2. The very and I mean very best way is to walk in the dealership, say in a loud voice "Who hasn't sold their quota yet?", the poor sob who is in danger of loosing his job is the guy you want. Then as you go through the process and the guy who comes in the office to make you mad, tell him that you know that he is the "heater" and that it isn't going to work and you want to talk to the person who makes the final decision, once you are in front of that person is the time you will finally get the best deal. If you do not know what a heater is or have never had experience with one, you haven't got the best deal.
  3. Most people get a kick out of the last picture, but strictly speaking they could be the biological parents of that child. It happens sometimes, for those who have never heard of GK Butterfield, congressman from NC, born to African American parents but looks white. http://butterfield.house.gov/aboutgk.asp there was a child born last year that was half white and half black, the line of demarcation was right at the waist, just weird genetics that show up from time to time.
  4. the only channel that you could possibly catch anything on would be RFD TV. The horse show is a two day event that I went to watch in person. This link contains some of the most amazing horsemanship I've ever seen. Stacy Westfall riding bridleless and bareback 2006 this video show the venue, there are three rings in the arena and all training takes place there in front of the gallery. The horses used are three year old geldings that have not been handled, and are basically buck wild. This year Tommy Garland had to lasso his horse to be able to touch it, by the end of three hours of training he was not only riding the horse but standing in the saddle and cracking a whip off of its back.
  5. I use both depending on the situation. Jigs, cranks, spinners (down to 1/8 oz inline spinners), topwater on a bc. All other spinning tackle.
  6. Did anyone else make this show?? It was awesome, three trainers John Lyons, Tommy Garland, and Richard Winters had three hours, to take a wild horse and break it. No force is tolerated, after three hours the contestants have to be able to ride the horse, turn in circles, back, ride an obstacle course, over tarps, drag logs, etc. Richard Winters didn't even use a bit, Tommy Garland was standing in the saddle and cracking a whip, John Lyons horse looked as tame as a 20 year old trail horse, he tried to spook his horse by shaking a rain coat at its face, no spook. Anyone who messes with horses can appreciate the feats these top notch trainers pulled off in just three hours. FWIW Richard Winters won the competition, but as a spectator I couldn't have picked anyone over the rest. It was awesome.
  7. I don't know wy but it is attitudes like this that make me want to light up. People must understand that I have the right to or not to smoke irregardless of what they think. I do not get much slack over smoking even in public. that said, The tobacco lawsuit was ridiculous, the lawyers got rich the people got nothing. The next lawsuit of this nature will be directed towards the fast food industry, ever wondered why they all started selling salads, etc after the tobacco lawsuit? As a former smoker and a social smoker now smoking is a choice, period. Those of us who choose to smoke should be able to do so, without being singled out for taxes or snide comments about how we are killing ourselves. Most of the people in my family smoke, and noone has ever died from or even had lung cancer. There isn't one case of cancer in my family of any type. The only people that I know who have died from lung cancer two cases were mesothelioma (asbestos cancer) and a couple who did not smoke but had lung cancer (caused by radon in the ground). It is my thinking that you either have a genetic predisposition to cancer or you don't. How can science explain families like mine in which the majority of people smoke, but in spite of that, hypertension, heart disease, lung disease and cancer are non existent. My family isn't the only one either. I don't know how many are aware, but I started rolling my own cigs a few years ago and roll your own tobacco doesn't even carry a surgeon's general warning. Bottom line my take on tobacco use and cancer is simple, natural tobacco doesn't cause cancer, the tobacco that has been chemically treated and "improved" may. It wasn't that long ago and cigarettes were prescribed to patients for "nerves". It is politically correct to attack smokers, after they tax all of us to the point we quit, those who eat fast food will have to pick up the tab.
  8. things that I find absolutely facinating are "Out of Place Artifacts", examples Mayan star charts that were more accurate than our own at the time of discovery, gold chains that are found inside coal (the coal formed around the gold), evidence of ancient sustained nuclear reaction (reactors), etc. The world is full of mysteries.
  9. Very sorry for your loss.
  10. On another note, not knowing the model of the Rossi nor your age I would hesitant to say the the value will double, but it is hard to imagine that the value will ever be much. I don't know what kind of 12 ga you are looking for or for what purpose. Pump 12 ga shotguns can be hand easily for around 200 bucks some new are in that price range. If you are looking for an auto Stoeger is now owned by Beretta so is Benelli and others. However Stoeger is licensed to use the Benelli inertia system and can be hand for less than 500. Depends on what you are looking for and what your price range is, but I would probably keep the .22 just because they are so much fun to plink with and introduce youngsters to target practice with. Good luck.
  11. Absolutely false. I've sold numerous guns all over the country even to citizens of NY State. As long as you ship your gun from an ffl to an ffl so that the gun can be legally registered into the new state it is totally legal. You can sell guns locally to whoever you want without any restrictions, a face to face transaction is legal in many states even across state lines. Gun ownership is a guaranteed right in this country. After the military I did a short stint in Law Enforcement and as a result I will not sell a gun to someone who is unwilling unable to meet certain parameters that I've set. For example I would never want to sell a gun to a convicted felon, and take appropriate steps to avoid that, I typically sell guns and have a ffl holder handle the transaction and pay him a fee for his time.
  12. I've come up with my game plan for tomorrow. The lake I fish has a good gravel/rip/rap bank on the sunny north side. Will be heading there tomorrow with the hopes that some crawfish will be emerging and trying the jigs, if that doesn't work I'll pull off to the shelf and try jerkbaits, raptraps, and spinnerbaits. In short I'm starting shallow and working it deeper til I find the fish.
  13. Wanting to use the Crankin Stick??? Throw your buzz on it, I use mine for buzz baiting a lot. I"m going fishing this weekend too, and still coming up with a game plan myself, good luck.
  14. In order to effectivenly answer the question if bed fishing is additive to the mortality rate of the bass, you would need a long term study on similar fisheries, a control group where no fishing was allowed and then compare the results. The same thing that is done when hunting is considered, many places close the late season saying that it may be additive to the mortality rate of the specie, however at the conclusion of a 7 year study the late season had no additive affect on recruitment of young birds or overall population. I live in a state that has no fishing seasons, a fishing season on a fish is a foreign concept to me. That said how could taking a guarded male off of a bed create an additive effect on the population of the fish population. The same bass that guards the eggs eats the fry, speaking of bass which is what this discussion is about. If you want to help the bass population curb the bluegill population, then if you do that you remove a necessary food from the chain that the bass later depend on. The reasoning that catching a or several bass during the spawn will have a negative impact on the fishery is short sighted and doesn't take into account of the mortality rate of the fishery to begin with. Example: grouse, rabbits and many prey animals suffer a 70% mortaliiy rate annually hunted or not. What is the base line for bass, how many eggs actually hatch, of those that hatch how many survive more than 6 months, a year, 2 years etc. Here is an article examining these questions, basically when the hatch was good bass fry represented 68% of adult and juvenille bass diet (cannibalism). The number of adult males may result in more eggs being hatched but will also result in more fry being eaten. This part of the life cycle is still being researched and the opinions vary, however at the present time from what I can gather it seems that catching a bass of a bed and releasing it doesn't hurt the fishery, neither will not catching a fish of the bed. It isn't the number of eggs that hatch that produces an increase in population of bass rather the successful recruitment of the fry once they hatch. Forgot to put the link in for the article http://www.yale.edu/post_lab/pdfs/post%20et%20al%201998%20(CJFAS).pdf
  15. They also have last years Tour PT for 139. I purchased a Accurist PT last year, quick shipment everything went smooth would purchase again.
  16. The Greenbrier, I also fish the New some but not a lot. Last time I floated the river my back went out about half way down (that was an excurciating few hours waiting to get to the pullout), so now I spend most of my time on the lakes. Moomaw, Claytor, SML et.
  17. That's no dink! thanks Paul, I caught her out of the local river, it is a narrow river only about 30 yards wide where I caught her.
  18. It wasn't that long ago that the egg laden females were prized in this area for the roe. Fishermen would take the roe and fry them for breakfast along side the fillets from the female. Made a decent breakfast, the old timers loved it, I never ate it and now that I know better they are released along with everything else. BTW most biologist agree that catching and releasing the bass off of a bed does no harm to the fishery.
  19. Man that sux, I will definitely be checking the spare, the others have already been checked.
  20. 19.5 a dink by comparison to what has been posted so far, here she is laying against my boat oar. She was released btw
  21. I'm not a big guy by any stretch, 6'2" around 210, and the Fritts reel was just fine in my hand. I will say that the round reel that I use now I find more comfortable. The reason people think the Fritts reel is large (I believe) is that it doesn't have a recessed foot by design. It is designed to sit higher in the reel seat, something about higher centrifugal force on the spool, line and less resistance agains the rod's eyes. If you have small hands you may want to handle one first, but do it on a rod, as it sits higher than anyother lp reel that I've handled.
  22. I'm not sure if I dumped my tackle boxes in the lake that I would loose three hundred bucks!!! Most I've lost in a day would be around 15 bucks, I lost two deep divers and several jigs.
  23. I ordered mine on the first of Febuary and still haven't got anything. I know when I joined other organizations that it can take up to six weeks. I am giving till the mid of the month before I start calling.
  24. I had two David Fritts reels and was real happy with their performance. For the money I believe it is the best deal out there for a dedicated crank reel. If not for my current infatuation with round reels I would still have both, but I have switched most of my lps to round, the round reel that I like is the Abu Garcia EXT Pro, which is only available in 6:5:1, I ordered a 4:7 gear set and changed out on my deep crank bait rod. I prefer the lower gear ratio on deep divers as they are much easier to work at a slower speed, good luck
  25. When comparing the ultra soft to the original you have to keep in mind that the ultra soft has a higher mono content than the original, that is how it is made softer. The original is more abrasion resistant and a bit denser than the ultra. Good luck, btw the diameter of these lines is comparable or smaller than mono or floro, they are not thicker. I like it better than the suffix seige that I replaced with Hybrid.
