  1. My ownership experience is limited to Mercury and Evinrude. I have no complaints about either, ppl keep telling me that my current Optimax is bullet proof. The last guy to tell me that had a brand new rude hanging off the back of his Ranger. If I had to repower tomorrow, I would have either a Evinrude or Mercury probably a Merc just because I wouldn't want to replace the controls. I will say this about the Optimax, mine is a 225 (the 3.0 liter) with a Tempest ss prop, the fuel efficiency is simply astounding. Much better than I anticipated then again I'm not a speed freak, I cruise at about 4000 rpms, speed is about 46mph (gps speed) at that rpm I'm burning right at 9gph which gives me a cruise range of roughly 250 miles (huge tank 56 gallon) FWIW these numbers are much better than my first boat that had a Johnson 140 carb motor, only had a 30 gallon tank had about 2 hours worth of gas. I can't tell u how many times I ran out, the gauge didn't work, lol.
  2. Saw this video on youtube, one of the best tutorials on side imaging I've seen. The guy even make 3d models for you to see. Tips 'n Tricks 19: Humminbird Understanding the …:
  3. Its the quality of the lens, the better the quality the more difficult to see certain digital images., especially mono chrome displays. When I'm buying sunglasses after putting them on I look at the POS card reader, if I can see it plainly them the lens is crap and won't block the glare of water. So what you're experiencing is a good thing.
  4. Are you wanting a two or four stroke?
  5. You have received solid advice, if it is bass then something isn't exactly right. Could be color, size, cadence etc. Just start experimenting with your offering, first try a different retrieve, add scent, etc. Good news is you're on the right track.
  6. Lmk how it goes please, shoot me a pm or post here. Thanks
  7. No Yoda would say "senko, bring the senko you must. Catch fish you will." On a side note Slone, AJay and Dwight all live in the Great Lakes area hopefully they'll chime in.
  8. If I could only have 3 lures to fish for smallmouths for the rest of my life, easy choice. 1. Rebel Pop R 2. Bitsy bug jig with ragetail chunk. 3. 4 inch grub 1/8 ballhead jig. Color smoke/black fleck. There are three go to lures that you can spend 20 bucks on and have enough to last all year and will work year round, even the Pop R. You can add stuff like flukes, drop shot, etc just to give u more variety and increase your skill set. With the grub don't be afraid to experiment, use a 6 size hook, add a split shot about a foot above. Cast and work it back like a mini Carolina rig, can be killer when the fish get finicky.
  9. I'll do a quick search to find the article, but bass do not eat tad poles. Can't remember why tho. Edit: from a post Paul Roberts made long ago Largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) learn to avoid feeding on toad (Bufo) tadpoles Kipp C. Krusea and Bradford M. Stonea aDepartment of Zoology, Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, Illinois 61920, USA Received 14 July 1983; revised 30 November 1983. MS. number: a4130. Available online 3 June 2006. Abstract Largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), when starved for 1 day, almost totally abstain from eating toad (Bufo americanus and Bufo woodhousei) tadpoles. However, there is a positive relationship between bass hunger levels and the acceptability of Bufo larvae as food items. With experience, there is a decrease in the number of toad tadpoles engulfed (taken into the mouth), and that actually consumed by the bass, while the number of larvae expelled (spat out) increases. Bass strongly prefer Hyla crucifer tadpoles to B. americanus larvae, and learn to distinguish between the two species. These results agree with the hypothesis that the schooling behaviour found in B. americanus tadpoles functions, at least in part, as a deterrent to predation. So short answer no, unless u can differentiate bull frog tadpoles from toad tadpoles. The bass can
  10. What I did was get the copy of registration from the DNR & notarized bill of sale. SC was happy with that. Georgia also doesn't title cars more than 10 years old. Awhile back I found an old 79 F150 that I wanted to restore, no title. I called SC DMV to see how to proceed, I was told I had to track down the last owner that actually titled the truck and get that person to acquire the title and sign it over to me. Although the title wasn't required by Georgia law, whoever holds the title is the owner regardless of registration, that's Georgia law. Oh yeah, if that person wanted the truck back I would have to give it to them! Needless to say I didn't purchase the truck.
  11. With the larger predators in the water I wouldn't automatically discount the silt area. That area, unless completely stagnant, should have allot of microbial life which gets the food web going. I would think there would be a larger food supply going on there. I've pulled some good sized fish out of places that I don't know how they even kept their back under water it was so shallow. edit: After looking at the lake on Google Earth the upper end of the lake should definitely be fished, there is a clear creek channel running throughout, unless the pictures on Google Earth are very old, it appears your food web for that lake starts up there and in a couple of the creeks. The island has a nice slope going off to the north meeting a slope from the bank that area will hold fish, easily to move up shallow and feed and the deep water is right there for escape. Good Luck
  12. See u have good tastes!
  13. Yes sir it was a compliment lol
  14. Boats your are becoming quite philosophical, maybe evolving into the Yoda of bass fishing; Clunn is the Buddah. My thought is if you're not tired after a day of fishing you're not doing it right
  15. There ya go brother, I really like baggers, and fully dressed bikes (Goldwings and Visions don't count) Enjoy! R u going to put a quarter shield on or leave the full size?
  16. Not necessarily, GA for example does not title boats, outboard or trailers. SC titles the boat and outboard. You have to determine what the selling state requires as proof of ownership make sure the owner provides you the original documents. Then u have to determine what LA requires and submit both to get the boat motor and trailer transferred to u. Different states require different documentation and it can get tricky. Good luck
  17. I've heard Hank Parker state more than once if you want to be a pro fisherman there are two things you can't have 1 a job 2 a family. Once you make it as a pro then that's your job and then you have the means to support a family. Making it is the hardest part, kinda hard to eat without a job, impossible to fish enough with one. Personally I wouldn't want to be a touring pro, constantly on the road, constantly worried about money because let's face it very few pros actuality make enough money to pay the bills. You can't depend on winnings to pay the bills its endorsements and sponsors. You can't get endorsements and sponsors without winning, viscous circle.
  18. As already stated bass hate lizards, I don't believe they are a primary food source as much as they are primary nest raiders. Spawning bass seem hardwired to attack a lizard. Get it close to where they're bedding and they will nail it.
  19. Ok fellas I want to know what specie of black bass you find easiest to catch and why. I listed only the species that are readily available to most geographic regions. I have fished for all four species though admittedly I've never targeted spots and catch them while fishing the lakes here in SC. From my experience the smallmouth is by far the easiest. They are imo the most aggressive of the bunch and aren't difficult to pattern, I do find them a little more difficult when they are confined in a lake but not by much, I must confess though that I grew up fishing for smallmouth bass, and so I have much more experience for them. I can dissect a river almost by nature, it doesn't take much thought at all. The next would be the northern strain, I was in my teens before I even fished for largemouth bass as they are not native to the river I grew up fishing. I did not even start seriously targeting largemouth bass until my adulthood, and never fished a lake until an adult.. The only largemouth available to me was in farm ponds and small impoundments, when I started targeting largemouth in larger lakes I didn't have much problem catching them, though I still have allot to learn about lakes. I tend to break them down into small sections and treat a large lake like several small bodies of water that connect. Don't know if that makes much sense or not, what I mean is I'll treat a bay or a cove like a pond, instead of being overwhelmed by trying to learn an entire body of water that covers hundreds to thousands of acres. I'll focus on small sections and tie them together over several years, there is definitely a learning curve transitioning from river fishing to lake fishing, as I'm sure there is for those finding themselves transitioning from lakes to rivers. IMO the Florida strain just seem to be more moody or passive, something. They are either turned on or not and I find it much more difficult trying to coax them into hitting my offerings. So what is your opinion?
  20. Did u see the little half inch pvc pipe sticking up? Those are the unofficial lanes, God have mercy on ya if you get an inch out. That place its just plain nasty.
  21. Just bought a 20+ footer with an Optimax 225, 250 hours when purchased 8 years old looks new, cost 21k with a 5 year motor warranty. Found it on boat trader there are loads of barely used boats on the market. FWIW sold new north of 45k bought from the dealer who sold it new.
  22. Walked into a local mom and pop place today, had rods at cost as well as allot of crankbaits. I showed impressive restraint ended up with two Spro BB1Z 12 bucks each. Going back after payday, it might get ugly.
  23. Even KVD has had a rough couple of years, he didn't qualify for the classic at Hartwell this year. I get skunked especially at Murray. My goal this year is to learn off shore fishing for the suspended bass there. I have often said fishing there is more like offshore salt water fishing
  24. Went out Wednesday 4/20 looking for bedding fish, found none. It was a very windy day and I didn't feel like fishing the rough main lake. Checked out the creeks and Bays in the sinking creek area, like I've already stated no bedding fish. Talked to two different groups at the ramps both pre fishing for tourneys this weekend. Bass are suspending off of points waiting for the herring to swim by. Weighted flukes and scrounger heads in twenty feet was the pattern mid week. Will probably stay that way until fall. Still find a few fish way up creeks, but the main population are on the summer pattern now.
