  1. That's funny right there
  2. I had a similar thing happen not long ago 2 weeks ago Clark's Hill. They were busting the top everywhere, totally ignoring my offering, finally saw a dead bait fish on the surface. I immediately knew the problem the super fluke was too big. Switched to a small fluke and bam. I started catching them on the small fluke, they were so tuned in on the bait fish that I had to match the size.
  3. The guy i fish with quite a bit has one spinning reel that is bps brand, no issues. If it works use it.
  4. Good idea! I'm so new to electronics that I'm not aware of mounting options. Right now the helix is on the deck, stock mount. What do u think about locales for the units? Scrap the Lowrance altogether? Put 899 @ console and raise the helix on the bow?
  5. Here in SC on the herring lakes; year round topwater.
  6. So is it sitting in the living room? One day when the wife was gone, I cleaned mine up real good, wheeled it right in the living room for the winter!
  7. Getting ready to install a HB 899 Si and want to get some input from ppl with more experience. I now have two Si units one Helix the other 899, here is my conundrum, which for the bow and which on console?. I already have an older Lowrance 322c on console, has gps, so I'm thinking of just adding the Helix to the console and use it for sonar. So I'd have the Lowrance showing a fullscreen gps and the Helix showing Sonar. Then the 899 for the bow, both Si units have the HD puck and I'm thinking of getting a high speed 2d puck for console unit. My thinking is when I'm at the helm the units are within 2-3 feet so I have a good view up close. I'm 6' 2" and currently have trouble seeing the details on the Helix at the bow when in Si mode, screen is about 8-10 feet from eyes. I'm thinking the 899 st the bow will cure that problem. What are your thoughts?
  8. X2, my boat has a horn, never use it, not loud enough. Air horn in a can
  9. Congrats, nothing like breaking the chain to the bank. Go forth and fish off shore
  10. Guess what day it is.........HUMP DAY On another note I hope you don't fish while mourning, I would think you would catch more in the morning!
  11. First welcome to the forums, there is a wealth of knowledge and knowledgeable fishermen here. Soak it all in. Also notice at the top of the pages here all the links to this website's videos and articles, and finally check out the thread called The best of BassResource located at the top of this section's page. Here is the link to it http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/60793-best-of-bassresourcecom/ Second post spawn bass, look for points, flats, humps that access deep water, if there is a channel intersection there even better. This type of structure allows the bass to move up shallow to feed yet escape to deeper water when they sense danger or just rest between feedings. With the stained water try a scrounger head, crankbait, bladed jig like a chatterbait, etc. Something that's going to provide a vibration for the bass to key in on. If it's very stained try working shallow, and I mean SHALLOW, like cast your line on the bank and work the bait off and into the water. You'll be surprised how shallow a bass will go, I know I've wondered how they even keep their backs under water. Third don't bother with a Lowrance, get another Humminbird, join the dark side the images are better, lol
  12. Congrats, just remember when she is a teenager and some young man shows up to take her out on a date, that is the perfect time to be cleaning your guns. Just smile at him and say, "you know I have no problem going back to prison", and cycle the action. Works like a charm my little girl is 24 and still single,
  13. Went to the classic this year since it was close by, VanDam’s boat this year is a new Z21, all HB electronics, 360 imaging transducer, hydro wave, can't remember if it had power poles or not. Wrapped in blue vinyl that was made up of thousands of pictures of KVD family stuff not professional pictures it was pretty cool. And the new Nitro Z21 was a beast
  14. Check Gander mtn, they had their remaining stock listed at $159. It's my understanding that the Chronarch E series is discontinued. On another note, I just picked up a NIB Quantum Smoke for 105 very nice reel. Also there are many Quantum Energies available for sub $100 NIB. Fleabay
  15. I've had luck with Zoom black with red fleck trick worms where there is an abundance of leeches.
  16. If you haven't noticed MLF puts the pros in identical Z7's.
  17. With the national divorce rate hovering around 70%, when the number of divorces considered as a total. Breaks down as 50% for first, 63% second 77% for third. I think a cynical approach is more than healthy. We're a "microwave society" most live for instant gratification, very few possess the ability to stick with anything very long. The generation before mine (I'm 46) taught us by their actions that people are replaceable. Its only going to get worse not better. The traditional nuclear family is an endangered species, if u have one be thankful and keep your comments to yourself; you're definitely in the minority.
  18. I hate braid but its on my frog and punching rig, because as Franco already stated ain't nothing better in weeds
  19. Thanks slone, in the video I posted the topics discussed were already covered in the manual for my unit, but I thought some other ppl looking at SI images could use it. I definitely am not an expert and need all the help I can get, so I will check out the other ppl you recommend.
  20. I believe you post proves it does, could only see it head on, newer version all angles. The old monochrome displays are the absolute worse when it comes to viewing through polarized lenses, the screen will be black. The privacy covers on computers that look black are nothing more than a giant polarized sunglass lens aligned with the screen.
  21. My learning curve was much the same as yours. The video and dvt have given great advice. One tip the really helped me in the beginning, tighten the spool tension knob to the point the bait DOES NOT fall, but readily releases with the tiniest shake, it will probably stop on its own before hitting the floor. Nothing wrong with the rod, a whippier rod is going to exacerbate your problem, bedside its going to really load up and shoot the weight out. You're already having birdsnest, do u really want to speed up that spool at this point? Get some casting weights, you want about 3/4 of ounce max, you don't want the rod really loading yet. Now set the brakes on max and practice once u get the hang of the basics you'll be amazed how fast you'll progress. FWIW the rod I learned on was a 7 foot MH rod lure rating 1/4 to 1 1/2 ounce, trust me the rod isn't the problem.
  22. I must respectfully disagree completely with this. One thing for sure your lure will never reach its maximum depth on that set up. You're losing power and allot of it both by the higher gear ratio and by reeling so slowly. I would say most of the loss comes from reeling so slow, you're also losing contact with the bait and missing fish, because the power given by the highspeed reel is strained the gears are really grinding. With crankbaits ipt is important tho not as important as power. To get a deep diver down you have to overcome three things minimally, the lure's buoyancy, water resistance on the bill, and drag on the line, I'm not even going to get into diving angle, what that reel is doing to the vibration of the lure, etc. Low ipt and power are what gets that crankbait down for u while allowing you to remain in contact with the lure. Ppl who think they are as effective with a high speed setup compared to someone with the proper tools for the job are just fooling themselves. I know because I was one of them. Even power fishing great KVD won't use higher than a 5.3/1 for all lipped crankbaits including squarebills (http://www.bassresource.com/fishing/crankbait-speed-kvd.html) . You will not find one person who is proficient with deep cranking using a high speed reel. In this instance speed kills, and loss of smooth power decimates. The idea that a high speed reel can keep up with a lunging bass is ludicrous to the point of absurdity. Bass have burst speed in excess of 12mph, that's 17.6 feet a second! Don't think anyone can reel that fast. Their cruising speed around 5mph that's 7 feet/second, so no reel on the market can keep up. We all have these ideas about fishing and reasons why we do certain things, but its better that your reasons be based on science instead of feeling.
  23. Leeches, look like they were attached to the gills or in the process of being swallowed, just got on my laptop so I could see the picture better. Bass do eat leeches, don't know why but they gobble them up. From an article called luscious leeches "Unfortunately for leeches, as if this miserable existence weren't enough already. In the world of fishing, with few participants is a leech in worse company. At the right time of year on the right body of water, there is likely no better live-bait additive....." I know Berkley makes them in their gulp line, and they are real popular with walleye fishermen, and smallmouth fishermen on river systems. Some striper fishermen have told me that there is no better live bait than a big leech, but I think that is due to the saltwater in their DNA where they feed heavily on eels.
  24. I don't know if y'all remember or not but when the 4.7/1 ratio was first marketed it was considered and many labeled as High Speed. You can still read articles that are obvious reprints recommending high speed reels for deep cranking! David Fritts is on record stating that 21 ipt is the best for deep cranking, I know his old signature reels from BPS were 4.7 for deep cranks and 5.3 for the rest, they were 21 ipt and 23 ipt.
  25. Let out some line, put a weight on the end, ipt is calculated full reel. Let the weight hang even with the butt of the rod and give one revolution on handle measure from rod butt to weight viola now u know ipt.
