Well J.T., I have to disagree with you on that. I had a couple of Humminbirds and wasn't impressed (very limited options/menu choices; poor detail; kept freezing up or turning off randomly...). I felt handcuffed using them. I now have 2 Lowrance units on my Ranger and love them (X-15mt and X-97).
Granted, they are far more technical and complex, so there's a learning curve on them for sure. But really, to get the most out of your depthfinder, you really need to take it off all the auto settings and dive into all the menus and settings.
I guess it's a matter of personal preference. For me, a Humminbird is a great choice if you like to turn on your unit and leave it - especially if your main use is just to know how deep it is. But if you like to tweak it to maximize the detail, enjoy deep structure fishing, or are willing to delve into the nitty-gritty of getting everything out of your unit, Lowrance rocks!
Now, color screen vs. B&W? Gotta say, I really like the color screens, they offer even more subtle detail you can't see in B&W. But I'll wait another year or two until prices come down a little more. They've already come down quite a bit.
