  2. When rooted weeds are fully developed many nutrients become available for filamentous algae to make slop bays sloppy. Filamentous algae lies on the surface like an "angel hair" Christmas tree decoration. It mats, glops together with the rooted vegetation, and forms a floating canopy of clingy gunk. They're worth fishing however. Often the heaviest, thickest tangles of shallow cover host the biggest largemouths during summer. Few anglers accept the challenge of tackling them, beyond making token casts to the outer edges of them. When bass are under dense mats of vegetation in the shallows, rig a plastic frog or lizard Texas-style with no weight and throw it into the thickest cover you can find, slowly swimming it toward the edge. You can use topwater baits such as these all day long because the bass feel comfortable and safe under the dense cover. A lot of times you'll catch fish during the heat of the day. A weedless spoon or buzzbait also will work when the cover is not quite so thick. Keep in mind, though, that a fish exploding through the grass often misses a fast-moving lure - and a spoon or buzzbait must be quickly retrieved to remain unfouled. The beauty of a weedless frog or lizard is that it can be fished slowly, giving bass a better show. Because a bass must blast through and inhale your lure, there will always be a few missed strikes. However, seeing that bass explode excites even the most experienced bass angler. If a fish misses it, don't stop. Keep it moving and the bass will come back and get it. Keep your cool when bass bulge the weeds to intercept the frog. Momentarily, the fish will explode through the vegetation. After the strike, to ensure solid contact, wait a full second before setting the hook. The Snag Proof Tournament Frog gained its fame on The Delta as the lure to use on the algae mats that emerge during the hot summer months.
  3. And if you're wondering, yes, we even have an article on copper sulfate: http://bassresource.com/fish_biology/algae_copper.html This explains in detail what negative effects can happen to a lake when using copper compounds. Now tell me, what other bass fishing site, or bass magazine for that matter, has THAT kind of info for you?
  4. Still alive?? LOL! Over 2,100 new members and nearly 40,000 posts in the last 6 months alone, and you're asking what? We're just getting started! ;D

  7. Yes - Smokercraft. Don't ever buy a Smokercraft. Horribly made bass boats - popped over 28 rivets in a single year on a one-year-old boat, then they wouldn't honor their warranty. In fact, the boats were built so bad, I don't think they even make bass boats any more. Oh, and did I mention the hull literally split in two places? Ya, about 2 feet long each along the strakes. They used to post their warranty on their website, but now they don't. And their FAQ basically says, "Contact a dealer" for every question. Pretty clear indication of how much they back their products. Ranger, on the other hand, welcomes direct contact with their customers and proudly displays their warranty on their website. Night and day difference, if you ask me. Check the websites of the boats you're interested in. What they don't say, tells you a lot.
  8. I'd delighted you've returned. Welcome back!
  9. Careful on those props, they will void the warranty. MinnKota's warranty (http://www.minnkotamotors.com/support/warranty_info.asp) says, "These limited warranties do not apply to motors used commercially, nor do they cover normal wear and tear, blemishes that do not affect the operation of the motor, or damage caused by accidents, abuse, alteration, modification, , misuse or improper care or maintenance. " MinnKota defines these aftermarket props as a "modification" or "alteration". And that altering your propeller will void your warranty.
  10. Mac - watch your tone and accusations - and I MEAN IT! I have no problems banning people who cannot treat people in a courteous and polite manner. Either you start showing some respect to others, or you're gone. Don't even bother arguing or debating with me about this. It will only grant you the instant boot. No Exceptions!

  12. Here's some great articles about color selection: http://bassresource.com/beginner/color_fishing.html http://bassresource.com/beginner/Choosing_Colors_selection.html Enjoy! ;D
  13. Sunlight doesn't hurt their eyes. I've seen plenty of underwater footage of bass roaming about in clear water under sunny skies. In fact, biologists scoff at the notion. However, these bass usually aren't feeding. Bass seek darkness because it helps conceal them so they can ambush prey when they're in a feeding mode. Ergo, flipping & pitching, skipping under docks, etc. prevail under sunny skies - because the bass that are primed to ambush your lures are positioned in areas where these techniques reach them. Don't take my word for it, listen to what the pros say over and over again. They like sunny days because it positions the bass close to cover, making them easy to find and target.
  14. The ones that take about a week are best. My favorite is Sikaflex 292. The stuff is incredible. http://www.sikaindustry.com/ind/ipd-ma-products
  15. Remember, there are 2 types of silcone sealants - a rubberlike sealant used around windows and doors, and another for use in an extremely wet environment. The latter's packaging states that it is for use above and below the waterline. It's a polyurethane silicone sealer that is much better than the kind you find in most hardware stores. It's more expensive, but is going to service you better. Look for it in marinas or boat speciality catalogs.
  16. I think these articles should be of help! http://bassresource.com/fish_biology/tree_structure.html http://bassresource.com/fish_biology/bass_structure.html http://bassresource.com/fish_biology/creating_fish_cover.html Enjoy!
  17. What an interesting and timely subject. An article just posted on the site yesterday touches upon this subject: http://www.bassresource.com/fish_biology/smart_bass.html Enjoy!

  19. What an interesting idea. Tournament or not, a get-together of sorts would be fun. I'm flattered you think I can run an event like this. A web site is one thing, running a large-scale tournament is entirely different. That said, I'm not against it, and I do have experience organizing events. However, I would need somebody with deep experience running large-scale tournaments to pull something like this off. I'm willing to play an integral role, of course. Any volunteers? I presume something like this simply doesn't happen over night, so we're probably looking at 2006 to get everything squared away. However, a more casual get-together may be more feasible in the near future. Who knows? After a couple of annual events, it could end up being the "Sturgis" of bass fishing! ;D
  20. Okay....it goes like this... First..A "Boy" bass meets a "Girl" bass at say...a Spring Bass Dance where the two dance and snuggle and after a long discussion with Her Parents and with their permission they are allowed to see each other again......but that would take far to long to discuss in real time as this message board would be just that...board! so.......To speed things up.....they fall in love....he asks her to go to the spawning grounds...she says yes but only if her mother can come along....he says...GRRRRR....they start off...the mother-in-law bass gets caught by RoadWarrior and taken home for a fish fry and they live happily everafter...oh...they spawned in the spring when the water temp was like 60+ degrees and YADA YADA YADA....
  21. Thanks guys, you're too kind. I'm glad you like the site - it's been a labor of love, to say the least. But the forums - it's all you. You folks are what makes these forums so great. All I do is keep them organized and keep out the riff raff. I can't tell you how pleased I am to see so many people helping each other out, passing along tips and information - I'm simply amazed. You're what makes this all worthwhile for me -- I've learned some new tricks from you too!

  23. FishBewareOfBrad. I used to be in your shoes too. I found a great gal, who was understanding of my "obsession". Eventually, she became resentful of the time I spent away from her, and tried to get me to cut back. I tried taking her out on the water a few times, but she was only mildy interested. Eventually, we broke up. That was 15 years ago. Ever since then, when a relationship began to get serious, I rattled off the same speech: "I fish.... A LOT. No, I mean it, A LOT. Like every weekend a lot. It's what I do. It's who I am. It's not that I don't want to spend time with you, or that it's a reflection upon you. It's just something I need to do. You're not obligated to like it, or try it. If you do try it and like it, great. If not, that's ok too. In fact, you can even hate it. But... You can never tell me to cut back or stop doing it. That won't work for me, and I won't do it." For the most part, that cleared the air and took care of the problem. Then I was blessed with a woman who not only tried it, she become addicted like me. When she urged me to buy a brand new Ranger with all the bells and whistles, I knew I had to marry her. Now we fish together every weekend. ;D It's all about determining what's important to you, and not compromising until you find your match.
  24. I think this thread answers your questions: http://bassresource.com/cgi-bin/bass_fish/YaBB.pl?board=boating_ID;action=display;num=1115251778
