  1. Sirsnookalot--sorry to hear you don't care for finnan haddie, smoked haddock. A staple in the fishing communities of Scotland, whence comes the name I'm sure. My family lines are Scottish fishermen so I was served quite a bit of finnan haddie as a lad. Get a hankering for it often but it's not available any place I've been. We used to be able to buy it in our local supermarket in San Diego, maybe Safeway or Piggly Wiggly but that was in my youth, maybe 50-60 years ago. As far as good tasting fish I'd have to go with salt water fish. It beats anything from freshwater that I've ever had. Unless it's salmon and is that fresh or salt?
  2. WRB I moved from SD back to the Raleigh area and recently ran out of my Otay specials I was using back in SD. Had'em for years. I just got some robo worms to replace them that are pretty similar. Haven't been able to catch the trophy yet as I'm fishing local ponds. But the fish here like them as well as SD fish do.
  3. Hey for a motor you could use a motor out of a junker sewing machine-comes with a pulley and a foot control for adjusting the speed. It doesn't sound like you would need anything substantial.
  4. What part of Korea are you in ? Do you fish lakes and rivers or lakes alone? I was there in 64 up close to the dmz- Yong ju gol, Paju-ri, Munsan ni. Anyway we weren't too far from the Imjin and close enough to Seoul to make a day trip for fishing but I never managed to get around to fishing. I was making about 85 a month and most of that was going home for family allowance so there wasn't much left over for fishing gear. Did manage to find enough to put away a few OB's though. Back in the day---1st Cav. Geez, I smoked too and a carton of cigarettes was about 2 bucks and on dollar nite at the EM club at the end of the month I was so broke I had to borrow a couple bucks to enjoy myself. Looking back, I am glad I went there although at the time I was there you wouldn't catch me saying something like that. Dave
  5. I didn't want you to think that we were casting at the birds we just managed to have a collision course when casting and caught them in midflight. I avoid the birds too. I've gotten seagulls before too when saltwater fishing. They hang around the partyboats looking for a meal and if you happen to be livebait fishing with anchovies or sardines it's pretty common for them to hit the bait in flight. Has anyone had a bird dive on a topwater?
  6. Another newbie here and thinking about my first post. We're all familiar with getting a birdnest but how many of us have gotten the bird---no no not that one, if you drive long enough everyone gets that one, I mean a bird in flight. My son and I like to fish a small lake in San Diego where no boats are allowed. Both of us in the last year or so while casting have managed to catch a bird in flight. Mine was a pretty good sized egret and his the lowly mudhen. Both provided some excitement for the day. I'll have to find the pictures. My son got mine on video. I've often wondered why we never catch a bird under water as there are plenty of birds feeding below the surface. Why will a lure resembling a wounded shad catch a bass but not a bird feeding on shad. Dave
