  1. Hey Guys, Thanks for the responses, I figured having not enough tension on the reel was probably the culprit, and I figured not putting so much line on it might help too. I didn't put a mono backer on it, but I asked one of the employees at the tackle store I went to (to buy new line to replace the stuff I destroyed...sigh) and he said the same thing, either a mono backer or a piece of cloth tape. Though that raises another question:Do I tie the braid TO the mono, or just use the mono as a buffer between the reel and the line? It's a bass pro nitro reel, made to take braid, but I figure if nothing else mono will allow the braid to catch better initially and thus spool a little better. Once again, thanks for the help guys!
  2. Hey guys, I just got a new baitcaster made for supporting braided line, and I spooled some up last night only to have it catch a knot UNDER most of the braid and I ended up having to cut ALL of it off because it was so bad. Because of this I was just wondering if theres a different way to spool braid that prevents that, I didn't have the line tension up for about the first 20 yards or so, and I thought that might have something to do with it, and I also think I put too much on and that contributed, but I'm just looking for some tips.
  3. Hi all, Just checking in from Monroe, LA. I was just wondering if anyone is having any luck right now around north louisiana in general. I'm asking because the temperatures are hovering somewhere around 100, with the heat index almost hitting 110 almost daily. Heck, it's 95 degrees and it's midnight right now..absolutely ridiculous. The past several times I've been out I've been completely skunked, not even a look. I accept that part of it is being a novice to this fine sport, but I can't help thinking this re-friggin-diculous heat is also part to blame. I hope someone says heat isn't affecting the bite, because it's only gonna get hotter in august... :'(
  4. You're right, those did help! Sorry for not using the search function, will remember to do so from now on, thanks!
  5. Howdy all I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with carrot stix rods, because I've seen them at cabelas and other places for relatively on the cheap, and everything I've read seems to point to them being quality rods, but I just figured I would ask some people a little more in the know than I am! So what do you think about Carrot Stix rods?
  6. Wow, you pretty much started me off on what I need to look for right away, thanks! Something tells me you might work on outboards or small engines in general..I was thinking that once I had the kinks of actually getting the remote steering and throttle connected I could buy the Ez-glide stick steer, which is the remote tiller in a way, and maybe a hot foot if I feel like pretending I'm a race car (or boat) driver ;D. So where might I be able to find the steering bar that I could attach to the motor? I'm gonna have to look at that engine to see if it has a mounting spot for remote throttle control, though in most situations for me things are never that easy. If not, I wonder if it's possible to attach something to the existing throttle system that runs to the remote throttle..her dads an electrician, he might be able to figure some way to splice it all together...this is getting me all tingly thinking about it!
  7. Maybe not in the purely practical sense, but I have a hard time seeing smaller objects from the back of a boat and I think maybe if I could steer from up front from a seat it would be a little easier for me. Plus, my girlfriends loves to fish also so she'll be going along alot too and could pull the rip cord for me, she's a tough little lady. That and paired with the fact that she likes to fish for bream and doesn't like making long casts in the first place, being up front with easier access to the bassy spots isn't nearly as important to her. Plus I think it'd be a fun little project to jump into. Heck, I built an air intake for my truck just for the heck of it, why not this?
  8. Hi Guys, I just purchased an old 1965 ouachita 12ft jon, and it came with a 7.5 Mercury tiller . The motor doesn't run currently, but my girlfriends dad and I are soon to get down and dirty into getting it going again. I was wondering if while we're doing it, is there a way to convert the tiller steer and throttle to a stick steer with a remote throttle at the front bench of the boat, so that I can steer from the front instead of having to move around every time I stop or go? Thanks for your help, love this forum!
  9. Hi Guys, I'm new here, just got into fishing heavily a few months ago and I'm loving every minute of it thus far..well every minute of it that I'm not picking backlashes, but thats getting less and less. Anyways, I'm a 21 year old student living and attending college in Monroe Louisiana. I just acquired a 12ft jon boat so I'll be able to get into some water by myself soon, and I was just wondering if anyone had any information on the waters around here, more specifically Bayou Desiard because thats no further than 2 minutes from my house and if I could get on the fish there, that would just make my day. Thanks for all the help guys, this forum has taught me tons just by lurking and reading articles!
