  1. whatever college you are looking at, check out the schools website and look under Clubs/Organizations/ Club Sports/ or Student Activities... if they have a fishing team it will probably be listed... if not see if they maybe have a hunting or fishin club... and if that is the case then email the president of the club and tell he/she that you're interested in joining and then just go to the meetings and if the school you are looking at does not have a team, then try starting one! and i know there are ways you can go about starting a club.. it only takes you and a few other friends to start a club! Yep thats pretty much the way to go about it. I just joined the Virginia Tech bass fishing team this year (I'm a junior). I wish I had done it earlier. Some clubs are better established and set up better than others, its just something you have to check out. I'll tell you what though, if you can place high there are some fine looking cash prizes/prizes in the FLW collegiate series. Not too shabby for doin a little fishin on the side of school I'm with you on the FLW series, I've only done one season of the tournaments, but it was an amazing time and very well organized by FLW and National Guard.
  2. Honestly the best water in the panhandle area is the Potomac. You can wade out in the middle and just fish the small pools and rapids. Don't know about the rest of the state though, been to Greenbrier, and I'm not sure if there are smallies in there, but I do know there are largies in it.
  3. I live in VA, but go to school at Shepherd U. in West Virginia. The teams I know of that are competing in the College Fishing FLW Northern Region right now are CNU, VT, Radford, and Longwood.
  4. For sure NoVa topwater is on. I've been throwing a buzzbait successfully for about 2 weeks now. Went to a pond today and caught about 15, biggest being about 4 lbs. Here's a pic of him. Cavitron buzzbait.
  5. I know these ponds. First of all, the pond near the hotel definitely holds fish. I've been fishing there since i worked at the waterpark there in 05. Pop-R's are big there, and senkos work well too. Now, the pond behind that government building, that's another story. Seems like it's extremely illegal to fish there. If I fish there, it's only on weekends. Holds huge fish. During the spawn I saw at least 10 5 lbers, and it's DEEP. If you're into drop shotting, you should try it there. To even get into the complex, you have to walk through poison ivy and find the spot in the barbed wire fence that's cut. I have work on Saturday night, but if you're willing to go Sunday, I can do that around 5.
  6. Nice job Oregon! I saw that Fresno State bagged an 11 lber, what's crazy is that they caught it all on tape, but the video messes up. Looks like it was a productive tournament.
  7. If any of yall need a fishing partner just let me know, I can pay for launch fees and help out with gas, I'm down whenever.
  8. Is that illegal at L. Fairfax? It's legal to take out trout in season, but honestly, I don't know if it's illegal to take out bass. I personally am a catch and release angler.
  9. Looks around 4-5 I guess? I'm really bad at guessing weights on fish, I always get my heart broken when I break out the scale myself.
  10. Just to add on this topic, one place I fish around the NoVa area alot is Lake Fairfax, and I'm sick of seeing people (mostly hispanic) take out 5 pounders and put on stringers. That is unacceptable. Don't get me wrong, I don't just stand idly by and do nothing, but I wish there was a way for people to sign up and be able to check licenses and contact authorities.
  11. I'm not a HUGE fan of Berkley, but I do like the Chigger Craws alot.
  12. Anyone ever fished Ulster Lake in New York? My family is going up there for my aunt's wedding and we're staying at a house that's on this lake. Wanted to know if it held any good bass.
  13. If it's 23" then yea, but just by the picture alone, I would say it's about 18" or 19" which makes me think it's about 3-4 lbs.
  14. I'm pretty sure trout fishing has ended at Lake Fairfax... I work there in the summer and was in the back room yesterday and saw all the trout signage so I can only guess it's ended.
  15. Not to stray off topic, but if you guys get a chance, Lake Fairfax should be really good this week. A couple of late spawners are sitll sitting on beds and I caught a 5 bass limit there on Friday just sight fishing from the bank, all averaging about 3 lbs. Still a fun time to just sight fish nevertheless.
  16. One of the things I like about the TT weights compared to lead weights is the TT has a wider eyelet. I break off a little toothpick inside the hole and the weight stays in place, doesn't slide up and down on your line.
  17. Quoting Charlie Moore- "It's not worth fishing unless there's a 'Keep Out' sign." Hehe... I fish a couple of ponds around the area, and some lakes in Maryland. Also the Potomac from time to time. Depending on how far you're willing to travel I could tell you about some ponds in Chantilly and some good ones in Herndon and Sterling.
  18. The other day I went to a local pond around the area where my school's at, and caught about 7 or 8 bedding bass on a dropshot worm wacky rigged. Just depends on what's working. The next day I went again, this time with my buddy and he caught the only one on a Red-Eye shad dropped right over the bed.
  19. I'm curious, where in Virginia are these lakes?
  20. Where in Virginia? I'd try senkos, shakey head, creature baits with a 1/4 oz bullet weight(baby brush hogs, sweet beaver, paca craws), and depending on the wind, spinnerbaits. If you're in VA, bass are cruisin around looking for beds (or at least they are where I'm at), I would look for drop offs from rocks, or steep banks and toss that creature bait right at the bank and drag it slowly across the bottom. That's what was working for me the other day. In clear water, try to use lighter colored lures. Green pumpkin, watermelon seed, etc.
  21. If it's windy outside, and sunny, go ahead and throw it.
  22. Trying to do some local pond hoppin around NoVa today, near the chantilly/reston area. Anyone want to tag along?
  23. My buddy and I took out the jon boat for a couple of hours today on a lake in Maryland and had an awesome opening day. Caught em on spinnerbaits, and creatures... about 11 keepers in total, but 2 giants. Both weighed in at about 5 lbs and came on the creature.
  24. I've just started to use Spro frogs, but I'm still a big fan of buzz frogs. Stanley Ribbits and Seismic Toads are my favorite. I want to try out those Zoom horny toads though.
  25. I just hook it right through the middle of the senko. Black/Blue fleck is my favorite color.
