  1. I've fished both and own two Dobyns Champions and have owned two Dobyns Savvy rods. I personally prefer the Dobyns rods but that only due to the fact that I can't stand the way the Duckett rods look, they're just ugly to me. Comparing the Duckett to the Savvy, same price range, the Duckett easily wins with its balance, weight, and sensitivity but they are a bit slower in action. The Ducketts are lighter than the Champions but the Champions balance well with alot of reels. If the Micro Magic rods looked like the Duckett Ghost rods or had a different color blank and color scheme, I could easily fish them and not want another rod...seeing Terry Scroggins boat flip a 10lber on one doesn't hurt either.
  2. That's awesome. I've picked up several for around 120-130. Sometimes you just luck out.
  3. I have a 300 that I use for musky fishing and really like. I started with an old pro qualifier round reel that was very similar to the Cardiff. They seem to be great reels for the price.
  4. I bought one of the original tech spec rods a few years ago and used it pretty heavily as a bank rod for the last 2-3 years. For the price they are pretty good rods but I started having problems the end of last year and has since been replaced. The reel seat has become worn and the reel is now loose on it, its very hard to keep the reel secure, even with it locked down as tight as possible it still is loose.
  5. I prefer centrifugal braking over magnetic. Shimano's VBS is where it's at for me, I prefer it over any other braking system, followed closely by the Daiwa Magforce-Z and V for magnetic systems. I've fished several dual braking systems and the just don't cut it for me, you shouldn't have to combine two sub-par systems to make a reel work correctly.
  6. Where I fish clear is a few feet and for cranks and top water I'm not too concerned with visibility. Im not going to throw suspending jerkbaits with it bit if its an issue a leader is always a viable solution.
  7. My shallow crank and topwater combo, a Sol on a 6'10"MH Carrot Stix Gold with 12lb Trilene Sensation in blaze orange. It's probably the lightest and most balanced combo I own next to my Zillion/Alphas combo.
  8. I would say the Pinnacle Perfecta rods are a good choice for a few $ over $150. I have a 7'2"M which is $144 on Tackle warehouse and really like it for the reasons you listed and drop-shots.
  9. You and me both. Too bad they're ugly. is it just me or do they look unfinished in that picture.
  10. Lucky Craft Fat CB BDS-1 in Golden Craw Lucky Craft RC 1.5
  11. I use two tubes and about 3 colors; Cabin Creek Critter Gitter in Summer Moss and BPS Tender Tube in Melon Pepper and Watermelon Red
  12. I don't know if this has been mentioned, if so, my mistake. I got a flyer from Dicks this weekend that said they will have a deal this week that if you buy a W&M Tessera rod you can get a W&M Victory reel for free. I'm not a big fan of these rods but it seems like a good deal for the whole combo for $90-$100. Don't know if this is just local but since there's been alot of talk about getting new gear on a budget recently, this would be a good time to do so. Couldn't hurt to check
  13. The only real time I've had success with them is ripping them out of grass. Cast it out, let it sink, slowly reel until you hit grass, rip it up, reel, rip......
  14. I go to Guntersville a few times a year with a buddy who started going there on guided trips. His favorite guide was Spinnerbait Kid, like Kent said. He went with several different guides but he said that Alex was his favorite. If I ever go down there on my own I would try to get a trip with him.
  15. I use a Quantum Smoke 7'4"H and like it pretty well for football jigs. There's a few good looking rods in the Flea Market that would be good for football jigs. There's a Dobyns Saavy 735 that would be a good choice for $125.
  16. Definately a junk fisherman, I like a good assortment of rods ready for the day. Plus, I'm usually the back of the boat so I tend to switch baits and presentations often until dialed in.
  17. I used to shy away from deeper water but Edwin Evers made a great point on one of the episodes of The Bass Pros. He said if you have trouble with confidence at fishing deep, just turn around and look at your motor, 20' isn't that far away. I had never thought about it like that but it made real sense. That one statement helped me and few bodies gain confidence in deep water and make it not so scary. A few years ago we would have never fished deeper than 10'-12' but last year we went to KY lake and caught em in 30' on football jigs. That didn't really answer any of your questions and i know you said you have a kayak but I thought is was a good representation of just how deep 20' isn't. As for the 15' rocky point I would throw a football jig or a crankbait
  18. I have fished a spook quiet a bit and its definately not too big. I also replace the hooks and add spit rings to the ones that don't have them, however, I think the super spook does. When I first started fishing I would throw a spook all day long, don't do that much anymore but I've caught 8" bass and bluegill on a standard Zara spook
  19. My shallowing cranking rod, a 6'10"MH-F Carrot Stix Gold, is used for squarebills, shallow and medium divers, jerkbaits, topwater, small paddle tail swimbaits, and sometimes buzzbaits.
  20. I wish I could get the Outdoor Channel on my cable. I used to love worlds greatest, Zona is nuts. Him and Skeet Reese on Clear Lake for WGFS is one of my all time favorite shows. "Honey, there's someone eatin the grass off our dock. It's that Steve Reese and Mark Zelner!"
  21. For me it's copoly. I use Yo-zuri hybrid, Pline CX, CXX, and floroclear, 8# spinning and 12-20# casting.
  22. Like most everyone said, it's practicing in the grass. I've never had a real problem with line twist, not that it doesn't happen, but it's not something I'm concerned about it. I never use a swivel on casting gear for stick baits, only Carolina rigs. Even with spinning gear, which I use quiet a bit, I don't let it affect me. I personally think the key is having the line tight in the spool, with spinning gear anyway.
  23. 7'M-F/5.8 or 6.1 reel - topwater, cranks, jerkbaits, tubes 7'MH-F/6.4 reel - plastics, lipless cranks, spinnerbaits, smaller jigs 7'H-F/7.1 reel - plastics, jigs, Carolina rig, line through swimbaits
  24. I use both JJs and megastrike. I tend to use JJs more but that's the chartruese to add color to the bait but I do use clear as well. They are different scents, megastrike has a shad type smell, they have also offered crawfish at dicks, where as JJs is garlic so there's something to be gained with both. I too have used megastrike more when I need a little lube for heavy grass and cover.
