  1. Fishin is pretty good there...it has a lil of everything..it has brush piles, lily pads, laydowns, and wildlife has sunk a pile of xmas trees lastyear in both lakes. There is alot of standing brush, saplings from where bottom of lake started to grow bf they refilled it again. The lake probably does not have much deep water structure but you can fish the creek beds deep. I think it would be best to hold off till late march early april or wont be no vegetation to fish and fishin should pick up by then. Its about 30-40min ride depending what part of Richmond.
  2. also i forgot to say that larger boats like bass boats should also be fine putting in there the ramps seem wide enough for most boats....with boats and bank fisherman included maybe it will be a big turn out!
  3. yes they have 2 concrete boat ramps withs docks...1 at each lake! they also have a fishing peir/dock on both lakes with some room to walk around the banks and along the dams. fishindrew, the dams gave way on the lakes like 4-5yrs ago and they have been rebuilt since and are both full of water and fish now!! I figured the guys with boats fishin alone can team up with a non boater and that would get few other guys off the bank. Also i have 2 canoes i could let couple people borrow if needed. The lakes are Electric only!! Trollin motors only! Should be tons of fun!! 8-)
  4. There are a bunch of guide services on the james just have to search around. James River Fishing Guides Guide Service Appalachian Bronzeback Guide (704) 467-5993 www.appbronzebackadv.com Canoe the New Guide Service (540) 921-7438 www.icanoethenew.com Albemarle Angler (434) 977-6882 www.albemarleangler.com Hatchmatcher Guide Service (434) 286-3366 www.hatchmatcherguideservice.com Hunter's Outdoor Family Adventures (434) 247-9608 www.vaguidedhunts.com James River Runners (434) 286-2338 www.jamesriver.com/jrr1.htm Razorback Guide Service (434) 923-9305 www.razorbackguideservice.com Big Cat Guide Service (804) 690-3875 www.catchbigfish.net Red Eye Outfitters (434) 315-1253 www.redeyeoutfitters.com Appalachian Bronzeback (704) 467-5993 www.appbronzebackadv.com Fishing with Fly (540) 819-8293 www.freewebs.com/fishingwithfly New River Fishing (540) 674-4930 www.newriverfishing.com Also this can be done with out a guide and save $$...just get map of river and park one vehicle at the take out ramp so when you get back you will have a ride back up to the launch ramp to get tow vehicle while someone stays with the boats. We do it every year few times a year...We would float about halfway down our float and setup camp on island....then wake up next morning early and have fun all day floating down...some great topwater action early in the morning!! If you go to state website they have all the ramps and float info on there under james river section. Anything above watkins landing is great for smallmouth! good luck! 8-)
  5. Powhatan Lakes would be cool place to do it...have the option to fish either lake! It should serve well to small boaters and bank fisherman. 8-)

  10. i fish the upper james river alot and like you said just down size a lil for most part. Some baits that work for me are flukes, senkos, t-rig gary yamamoto twin tail hula grub, jigs, tubes, jerk baits, small cranks, spinner baits, top water etc list goes on! Normally ill look for where creeks flow into river, behind large rocks where current breaks or along or behind islands...my fav is find a rocky section of river thats deeper and drop shot! I also have good amount of success fishing behind sets of rapids, Cast up into the rapids and let current bring your bait back down into the pool below and keep contact with bait and hold on bc smallies will crush it coming down rapids! Also i would start out with alot of weedless type stuff till you learn the river some bc with current you get snagged its hard to turn around and go back up river to get unsnagged you will use alot off trollin motor battery tryin to fight current or by time you start motor it would already be too late. I know my section of river enough to know where i feel safe throwing cranks on certain sections and not in others. You will enjoy smallie fishing in VA im sure just keep it simple! 8-)
