  1. How do you fish the tubes for crappie? I bought some small squirmin' squirts (red head, green skirt) and some 1/8 and 1/16 oz. squirt head jigheads, but haven't had a chance to try them out yet. Do you cast into cover and then do a steady retrieve? Or do you fish them more like you would a worm with a sink/hop/retrieve/repeat pattern? I think I also saw some guys suspending them under a slip bobber once also. I was just curious to know what the best technique was for using these small tubes around cover for crappie and bluegill.
  2. x2! I hate cutting and re-tying every time I want to change baits. I told my wife the other day that I needed more rods so I didn't have to re-tie as often when I wanted to fish different baits. I told her my goal is to eventually own a different rod/reel combo for every lure in my tacklebox. Then I can dispose of my tackle box and never have to re-tie another knot! Of course, she wasn't as impressed with the idea as I was. :
  3. I fish a lake that has some deep areas that I think would be good for a c-rig. I've never fished a c-rig so I've done my homework and read all of the wonderful advice on these forums. But based on what I've read, it seems the recommended rod for a c-rig is a long rod (at least 7') with a MH action. Problem is I don't have a rod that fits that description. Is it worth trying the c-rig on a 6'6" M rod? Or should I just wait until the wife will let me buy a new rod before I try fishing a c-rig?
  4. Fished the Rage Tail shad and toad for the first time a couple of weeks ago. It was actually the first time I had ever fished topwater baits ever, and I had a great experience with the Rage Tail products. On the second cast of the morning, I landed the largest bass of the weekend giving me bragging rights over my sted-dad and my brother-in-law. Yesterday I picked up a pack of the Rage Tail craws, and can't wait to try them out this Memorial Day weekend. I'm sold on the Rage Tails.
  5. Nice crapola. What did you catch him on? Live minnow? Jig? Beeltspin? Please divulge.
  6. I haven't lived in Mobile since I graduated from high school in '89 so I haven't fished Big Creek Lake in a long time. I fished a couple of father-son tournaments on the lake when I was a kid, but haven't fished it since. As I recall, it was a good fishing lake back in the day, but I think it is a little more pressured today than it used to be.

    Welcome, welcome, welcome!! ;D
  8. Can you be a little more specific about where you were when you saw the lake? I may be able to help you out since I am from the area. If you were in southwest Alabama, then it was probably Big Creek Lake which is the municiple water supply for the city of Mobile. It is actually located west of the city in the Semmes community. If you were driving through the southeastern corner of the state on your way to Florida, then it could have been Lake Eufaula.

  12. I'm with you! Great angler and educator.....horrible judge of hats! Roll Tide!! Where 'bouts in MS are you? We have a place on Lake Eddins. Heading there this weekend.
  13. Not from there, but have a couple of good friends that live there. I hear its a very nice place. Welcome to the forums. In my short time here, I have found this site to be very informative and the people here are friendly and helpful.
  14. Hi, all. TrailerHook here. I'm new to the forums...just joined yesterday. I just jumped right in and started asking questions without posting an intro. Then I came across the discussion thread about whether or not forum newbies should intro themselves. So I decided that I should probably do that so everyone knows who I am. So here goes.... Male, late 30's, married, no kids (yet :). Live along the beautiful beaches of NW Florida. Been around fishing my whole life (stepdad was an avid tournament angler) but still consider myself a novice because I just didn't have time for fishing as a kid and young adult between school activities and career. But recently we just bought a place on Lake Eddins, MS so I'm trying to get back into fishing on a more serious level so I can better enjoy my weekends on the lake. I've got a lot of years of learnin' to catch up on, but I'm up to the task. Hope you guys and gals can help me out. Looking forward to learning from everyone! Thanks for letting me be a part of your group!
  15. This is a basic question and has probably already been asked somewhere on these forums before. But I'm new here so I hope you will cut me a little slack. I am in my late 30's and have been fishing off and on my whole life, but have never had a desire to get serious about it until just recently. I have always used only baitcast reels to fish with and I have several of them rigged with various lures. But for Christmas last year, someone gave me a nice spinning rod/reel combo as a gift. I've never really fished with a spinning set-up before. So can someone enlighten me as to the pros and cons of spinning tackle? When should I use it versus the baitcasters. Right now I've got it spooled up with 10# mono and have a texas-rigged worm tied to it because I saw someone on TV fishing a worm on a spinning reel. But what other techniques and circumstances dictate the use of a spinning reel versus a baitcaster? Thanks in advance for your insight, and I look forward to learning much from these forums in the future.
