Its not the bait size that bothers me. An 18" bass can eat a 12" bass no problem. I just think that theres got to be a better and more efficient way to get to that depth.
You wanna try something that for sure works, ive proven it to myself in fly fishing. After you catch a fish, take all that slime on your hand and smear it on your bait.
I started throwing that berkley gulp shad back when they classified the chartruse pepper/white as a saltwater bait. I just knew it would work in fresh water and I TORE them up. They now classify it as freshwater and its still as good.
I remove at least one shield on every bearing in my reels and both on my spool bearings. All they do is hold in crap. You can soak a bearing, remove the shield and soak it again and still get stuff out.
Youre going to want to remove the bearings, remove the shields as well and soak them in lighter fluid or acetone, changing it out after soaking until the fluid is clear. Then spin them on something that can hold the inside still like a pencil and make sure theyre not grinding, free spinning. Let them dry then oil them(one drop per bearing).
I had everything I needed already as I have about $5000 in fly tying materials easy.
Basics to do it like I do it
Vice
Bobbin
Kevlar Thread
Jig Heads
Skirt Material
I throw other stuff in the mix too like feathers, flashabou,ostrich herl... whatever looks neat. Then determine if the extra materials were worth it. Things like the herl are very fragile so they will get beat up fast.
Thanks, hes a maniac. He was just over 12 months when that pic was taken. Hoping to get him to reel one in this summer. This is going to be his first christmas where he knows whats going on.
I do it like this
Mar->Oct = Bass Fishing
Oct->Dec = Whitetails
Dec->Mar = FlyRod Trout
I live on two of the top trout streams in PA. One is C&R, the other when not full of trout is full of smallmouths and I have two bass lakes within 20 mins of my house. One is less than five miles.
Its not that I dont bass fish in fall/late winter I just dont do it A LOT.
My first bass boat, 1979 Terry, I redid this entire boat including transom and decks, then sold it. It got a lot of wows on the water for being 14'
I went about 4 years without a boat, I was into motorcycles
Now I have a 1992 17' Tracker, no full on shots, but my boy loves it
My reel is orange, are you saying the diagram for the exceler is the same as the capricorn? I just had both apart this week. Because the internal bearing size and retainers between the two are totally different. On the side plate bearing one is held by a clip and one is held by a star and none of the bearings are the same size nor is the spool design.
I have the ability to continue to prep for my fall(scouting) which consists of heavy travel to bowhunt whitetails all while fishing tournaments, working full time and raising a son.
