Down here in west central bama we have several great places to chase spots within a hour or 2. Holt lake on the warrior river is the one I fish the most, it has a very good population of spots. The biggest I've got sofor is 5 but I know that there's some much bigger. Since I havent yet fished for smallies I think you'll find they have a lot in common, both like currunt, both like cooler water and both are deeper than a LM. Plus they both fight a lot harder:)
I normally fish small worms, jigs, and CB. They tend to school, so find 1 find more. Deep wood is hard to beat if it's close to current.

This spot came off a CB early on lake mitchell on Feb 5th in current, once the current was cut off the bite stoped.
Also, night with black spinner single blade SB yo-yoing will get your arm jerked off
