  1. On the whole I'd have to disagree. Yes today's bc reels will allow one to present small offerings (the Pixy, 50mg, Sol, Alphas, etc.). But not eveyone has the budget to get one of these beauties. So no, spinning tackle and spinning tackle only is not exclusively better suited for light stuff. I agree with you there very much so. But unless a person has the loot to purchase a finesse casting reel, I'll usually recommend a spinning outfit; especially if the person is more of a novice to fishing tackle. JMHO.
  2. When people are using these super light weights on their stout bc gear, chances are they're pitching or light flippin'; close-range stuff. Unless the individual has the proper tackle, like a finesse casting reel, trying to cast those little buggers can cause a ton of problems. A four inch hand-pour on a light jig is not always a cakewalk to cast on a heavier rod. God forbid it's windy. Again, if it's close-range stuff, no prob. If the person is fishing a heavier plastic like a senko, creature, etc, then again, no prob. A lot people's heavier plastics/jigs reels ( Zillions, Chronarchs, Curado 200's, etc.) are not always the best choice when fishing light shakey jigs, and even lighter plastics. As I said, I even prefer to fish these combos on bc gear: a rod with a lower rating and a reel that can handle casting lighter weights. Most of my fishing is casting, not pitching/flipping. For a person looking for an all purpose light plastics rig, a spinning rod or properly matched bc is the way to go. JMHO. That's all I was suggesting. 8-)
  3. This past spring, the Smallie Beaver has seen a lot of time on the water from me as a trailer for 1/4oz All-Terrain Tackle jigs. I noticed you mentioned lilly pads. Rig one of the Sweet beavers you have weightless or with a small bullet weight, burn it on top by the pads, and let it fall into the pockets.
  4. You shouldn't have any trouble casting a 3/8oz jig on your baitcasting gear. The 1/4oz jig might give you trouble if you are using a heavier set-up. With the proper rig, 1/4oz should be no problem. I cast light jigworms all the time on a casting outfit, and have a blast doing so. My rig consists of a Loomis BCR852 GLX, and Daiwa TD-Z 103ML, and 8# Yozuri Soft. The 852 has a rating from 1/8 - 3/8oz; darn near perfect for shaky heads. Most people are using spinning gear because they are throwing light jigs, and many times they are paired with a finesse plastic.
  5. I've only fished the Fluke on a jighead for walleye. The Super Fluke gets the nod for my bass duties.
  6. I had mono in middle school. I remember being very sensitive to light, even in the house. If I was in a room that did not have a dimmer switch, I had to wear sunglasses. I don't remember much else about it except for the fatigue, though I can't recall how long it took to get tired. I just remember it sucked. Our youth group at church had a lock-in a bit before that at the Y. A bunch of us were sharing sodas. I got it from someone there.
  7. There's another alternative that I used just today while shore fishing. My lure ended up in a tree and I didn't have anything that I could wrap the line around. I tightened the drag and walked backwards and pulled with the rod and line in the same line so the rod wouldn't break. I got my lure back, along with the tree branch. I've caught many a tree branch that way as well. ;D It's amazing what a MH seven footer and fifty # braid can do. When first wrote that, I just used the word rod to generalize the equipment. I've done some damage to cheaper tackle before, even with the backwards walking.
  8. When fishing in snaggy areas I always tie a leader to my Power Pro. In case your lure gets hung-up, and you have to resort to the pull-and-pray method, the leader will snap much much easier than the superline. If you get snagged with a superline tied directly to your bait, the only ways to get unsnagged is: pull so hard you bend the hook, cut the line, or go swimming. Cutting the line sucks because you'll lose a lot of line, and braid ain't cheap. If you have to pull crazy hard to bend the hook, you risk breaking your rod. And unless it's summer, who wants to go swimming? I learned the value of a leader over the years casting leadheads for walleye. Those darn little jigs get stuck in everything. And it always happens on a long cast, always.
  9. When I first started fishing topwater baits on a regular basis, I was missing a lot of fish. My problem, like many people, was premature hooksets. To combat this, after I made my cast and put the bait where I wanted it, I would turn my head and talk to my buddy as I worked the bait back to the boat. This way, I would feel the fish before I set the hook, as I couldn't actually see it strike the lure. Doing this exercise really increased my hookups.
  10. I know where he needs to go and for what players. I won't mention their names but their initials are CHRIS DUNCAN and JASON ISRINGHAUSEN Good luck with that trade. If the Cards really wanted him, they'd have to part a few guys like Shane Robinson, Jesse Todd, or Noel Salas, etc. The thing is, is that really worth the Cards parting with a bunch of talent for a few months of CC? A ton of people are mentioning the chubbies, but who do they have to offer that Cleveland wants? I will personally be ticked if the Crew makes a run at him. Not saying he won't help another team, but selling the farm in Milwaukee just doesn't make sense for Sabathia. Not this season. That one guy won't push us over the hump, and if they part with either Gamel, LaPorta, or Escobar, I'll be livid.
  11. So where is CC going, and for what (players)?
  12. Prayers for you and yours.
  13. Unless your casting in tight quraters, or beating the banks, it's almost always better to crank with a longer rod, especially if you need to winch a fish out of the cover you were talking about. So, I'd go with the 7 footer. JMO As far as a reel is concerned, if you are going to be fishing lipless cranks the most over the lifetime of this setup, get a reel with a higher gear-ratio, or IPT (inches per turn). If you are going to mostly use this combo for deeper cranking, go with a reel with a lower gear-ratio. If you can swing it, it's always worth it to upgrade to the best tackle you can afford.
  14. That sucks. Sorry to hear. The worst possession a tackle-nut can lose is their tackle. I hope you're able to recover some and/or insurance takescare of you. Bummer 'bought the window. The city of Eugene is a beautiful place, but the meth is definitley a problem. I was there a few years back, and in the middle of the day, I saw a meth-head having an argument with a bicycle. No kidding. He was shaking his fist, point his finger, and everything. It was at the quick-stop a few blocks down from the fairgrounds. That area is meth/smack central.
  15. Funniest thing I've heard all week.
  16. Sounds like the wife took advantage of your incoherent state and got a new iron out of it. She throws a few baits your way, and all is good. ;D
  17. There goes the Cubs' $135 million dollar man.....down goes Frazier, down goes Frazier.
  18. Another vote for the BPS Crankin' rod. My second place vote goes to the 7', M powered BPS Extreme XPS spinning rod. I have this teamed with a Stradic 2500, and use it for casting jerks, cranks, and minnow baits to walleye (Ripsticks, Deep Little Rippers, Ripshads, Rogues, X-Raps, Grappler Shads, etc.).
  19. Buzzbaits!!!
  20. They will have a Zillion rod like that. TDZL631MFB Medium power Fast taper 6'3" 8-17 lb test and 1/8-5/8 oz lure weight. That's the best news I have heard all day. Looks like you just spent my money Robert. ;D It's a good thing the Calcutta DC doesn't come in a 101, or the pics you posted would have spent A LOT more of my dough.
  21. I'll admit that I like the look of the reel, and I love my TDZ100HLA, and it's a special edition, but the IPT on this SE is 32", that's only .4" more than the current high-speed. Since when does less than half of an inch warrent the name 'Hyper Speed?' I must say that the prospect of the eleven CRBB over the four CRBB and two SS bearings in the current Zillion is very nice. I'm assuming some of those badboys found their way into the handle? I hope so. I'll be ticked if we have to buy a whole new handle if we want to do a bearing upgrade, like on the current domestic models. The news of the Zillion rods is freakin' awesome. I just hope they have a short, 5'10"-6'3", medium powered rod for topwater.
  22. I wish I woulda sold my Clemens rookie about two years ago. :'( ;D As far as autographed balls go, I have a cherry Mantle and a cherry Mays. Both with COA. I bought them on QVC when I was a kid for chump change, something like $40-60.
  23. I've never done a kayak trip before. I've done plenty of canoe trips back-in-the-day. Those are some of my fondest memories as a youth. As I got older, they were replaced by drunken tube trips down slow moving rivers. I think I dumped more beer on my head than I drank.
  24. How are you liking that Shiryu? Did you crank with glass before this purchase?
