  1. For me, I always place the fish back in the water if possible, but I'm just a softie haha. I think the only time I would feel for the fish is if they are handled out of the water for a while to get the hook out, then I would think that a careful release would be warranted. If you can pop the hook out quick and you throw (maybe more like "drop" or "lob") the fish back then there probably won't be any adverse effects. I'm not sure how often a bass jumps or from how high outside being reeled in by an angler, but I can't really think of very many situations where they withstand that sort of impact. On the other hand, bass seem to be pretty sturdy fish and I don't think the overall impact of the practice will affect a fishery too much, if at all.
  2. I like the Navionics WebApp for topo purposes. I think there is also a feature you can turn on and it (if my understanding is correct) uses data collected from units that have been out on the water to give more recent depth numbers. I think that's the function and how it works but I'm not entirely sure. Either way it's pretty awesome.
  3. My favorite is a topwater frog because of the strikes you get while fishing it. Nothing gets my heart racing more than seeing a big fish just absolutely demolish your hapless frog that's scooting around on pads and algae. Not to mention the hook set really lets you give them the business haha.
  4. And the mystery remains: What does the fox say?
  5. The lyrics of the song were intended to be translated into Spanish for humor. You know, because it's Taco Bell and the food is the epitome of authentic Mexican cuisine haha.
  6. I like the idea of calling up manufacturers to see what their most popular styles and colors are in terms of sales, that may be one of the closest indicators of what's "best." One other thing I wanted to note was that, since it is a persuasive essay, don't forget to explain why your control pond is ideal to be a control pond in order to determine the best soft plastic. The best persuasive essays consider and shut down counterarguments and considering this topic, I think one big one to address will have to be the the external validity of the experiment that you're conducting on your own since you are restricted to one body of water, in a particular region, with its own combination of life in it, ... etc etc. Unless your teacher for the course is also an avid angler with a good understanding of the sport, you shouldn't have too much of a problem with this area. I also took AP English in high school and wrote an article on catch and release that ended up in the local paper. Writing about something you really enjoy and care about makes writing more enjoyable for both you and the reader because your passion will show through your work! Good luck and have fun with it!
  7. Hence the second sentence
  8. I had no idea there were bats that could get that big. I wonder why it was killed? I guess it was fear but it goes to show that a little knowledge goes a long way, I'm glad I learned about this. Thanks for sharing!
  9. Since the crankbait has a lip and likely a different body profile, it probably has a different action. More wobbly as opposed to a lipless crank's "wiggle." That difference in action could be what it takes to get fish to strike.
  10. Ah okay, thanks. I hope this doesn't happen to me, it would be a sickening feeling to have to release a fish that has no chance. But at the same time it's probably necessary to prevent people from getting around the minimum length regulation.
  11. This just made me wonder, if it's not legal size but is clearly not going to make it, would it be against regulations to keep it or does that create a situation that is an exception to the rules?
  12. Indeed, this website has a wealth of information, even on the Bass itself so definitely go through the articles! Also do a thorough search on the internet, you'll have to wade through some tackle talk, but you'll also be able to find good information on the fish's nature and behavior. You can try using it's regular name or even scientific name for more biological information on a search engine. Another thing you can do is pop into your local bookstore and look for some books on the species. Once you get into the fishing section you should be able to find a couple on the Bass.
  13. I've been looking into them too, I think the main difference is the quality of video and stills. From what I saw the lowest option of the cameras records 1080p video at 30fps and the silver at 60fps, and then the black has 4k (not widespread yet). I think the basic one will work fine for uploading to Youtube. If you want smoother video then go for the silver, but I'm not really sure myself what the difference will be. You may want to do a comparison of 1080p video at each frame rate to see if you find a difference and whether it is significant enough to warrant the silver or even black edition. Here's a video showing the 2 frame rates side by side, I'm sure there are more to help solidify your choice.
  14. I don't think that kind of injury will hinder the fish too much, the stress of being caught and out of the water, in my opinion, is more of a risk to the fish so be sure to learn and practice proper catch and release techniques! I'm not a fish biologist by any means, but I would imagine that a tear in the area you're referring to (if I'm thinking of the right area) would regenerate and close up after some time. How long, I'm not sure, but hopefully someone who does know can come along and answer that for sure.
  15. I'm in the Philly area for school (brought my gear this time) and I'm not really familiar with places to fish. If any of you guys want a partner out there, hit me up, I need to find some places to fish for when springtime rolls around.
