No, the probabilities just shift if the fish are feeding. The best presentation will always maximize the probability of catching a fish.

Suppose you know with 100% certainty that fish are located in a certain area. With the perfect presentation, let's say on a particular cast you have a 40% chance of inducing a strike. With a suboptimal presentation you may have a 20% chance of inducing a strike. With a poor presentation, you may only have a 5% chance of inducing a strike. The numbers are obviously made up, but you can see that a better presentation will improve your "luck."

I moved from Western PA to NEPA about 5 years ago. The stuff that worked for smallmouth on the Allegheny doesn't seem to work here. I haven't had much success on the Delaware, so I've been fishing the lakes mainly instead. Anyone have any advice? I'm fishing from the bank BTW.

Thanks a lot for the encouragement guys. I've been fishing for 20 years and this is the first time I've tried to release a fish and she just floated. I feel especially bad about it because the gut hooking is probably because of my own lack of focus. My wife and son came down to the lake with me, and I was watching them run around while I was fishing. I read up on the "through the gills technique," so I hope this won't happen again. Thanks, John

I was fishing a Tiki Stick and gut hooked a 5-6 lb fish, which is huge for a 130 acre community lake in NEPA. I feel awful now. The only good part is that there was another guy there who took the fish to eat.

Hi, First of all, I'm still trying to get used to using light line and smaller lures on spinning gear. Last night I was fishing a three inch Sluggo, with a size 1 Gamakatsu offset shank worm hook. I rigged it "Texposed" - like a Texas rig, but with the point exposed. In under a half hour, I felt a bump 5 times, but I set the hook and nothing was there. I finally caught a fish after the sixth bite. I decided to wait a bit before settng the hook, but I ended up hooking him in the roof of the mouth rather than the jaw, which leads me to believe that I should have set thehook sooner. Does anybody have any ideas on how I could be missing so many fish?
