Can't say without seeing it, but that doesn't sound like it's the rod. With a sharp hook and good technique, you can get the barb through with a wet noodle. What jig heads and line are you using? And either BC or spinning will work equally well, it's a matter of preference, I personally like BC for everything but the smallest lightest lures.

I can't think of any plastic that won't catch bass, I have a few favorites, but several competing products would work just a s well I'm sure. I like to have something with me that I can cut or bite down into a different presentation if required. I find getting the hook and weight matched up well is more important than the actual bait.

I rig pre spawn large swimbaits with them, as well as liveline and use them as lure hooks for salt water.

No, but I have given up (never took it up actually) on fishing anywhere from anything where the fishing sucks.
