I've caught a few around here, biggest around 9 lbs. Goldfish are great bait, but illegal in a lot of places. There is this gold and silver one where I pickerel fish in the winter that's over 30 lbs, I see him every so often, but he's very shy.

If you are going to be bouncing them around get something to pad the inside, pool noodles work great, but I've used socks and t-shirts, and that works too.

We are conflating two things here. Whether LMB are "line shy", as are some fish, and does line diameter affect a particular lure's action, and if so, does that affect it's effectiveness negatively. -LMB are not line shy. - Yes, some lures will work best with a particular or narrow range of line diameter, and most times, this is what is desirable, but sometimes, particularly when little or no action is desired, going against the grain is the ticket.

No, but I don't find the reverse true either, specific to the individual lure whether jointed or not, how deep it runs, size/profile, and action is what I find determines what works or not in rivers (and most other places).
