  1. We used to catch them as kids by making fykes and weirs with flat slate rocks, you herd them in there and they are trapped.
  2. Yup, 12 lb big game or 14 lb silver thread.
  3. I get 16, but I might be missing one or 2, and Canada eh!..
  4. Amen. We commercial fish and tournament saltwater fish. The guys that think its about tackle or lures or presentations just contribute to the Kitty...
  5. It really depends on the size/weight of the lure, and the corresponding rod. A swimbait/A-rig rod is more similar to a musky or inshore saltwater rod, and in most cases won't balance well with a 200 size reel particularly the newer lighter ones. As far as line capacity, I don't think its an issue, for bass fishing 1 1/2 to 2 times your longest downwind cast is really all you need. The only real way to tell what works for you, is to try it and see.
  6. What you want is a pinch on sinker (look in the salt water section), essentially a rubber core without the rubber core, and 2 ears on either end, or solder...
  7. I liked them better when they were made in Central America, but they are still a good finesse jig, I fish the 5/16 as a brush jig, and the 3/16 as a swim jig.
  8. I supplemented the drag on a tarpon with my thumb once, never again.
  9. The "tournament" edition is the one that shows up at a discount during their sales, get the regular Pro Qualifier, better reel.
  10. When I went to school, 5 was 1/3 of 15... And if you do a little P90X, you should be able to crank that bad boy a little tighter, Oh, and except for heavy cover close contact heavy tackle combat fishing, 5 lbs is plenty...
  11. Ah, NO! You can catch fish after fish with a minnow or shiner when artificials do nothing. That being said, There are different skills required for each. Since you will be fishing from the bank, and a limited number of places, to boot, the most important thing to do is locate fish. There are places that will not hold fish, places that sometimes will hold fish, and places that will nearly always hold fish. Once you locate these places, the structure, cover and conditions will dictate what lure(s) are best suited. I would thing a spinnerbait, crankbait, and some soft plastics are a good place to start, but again, it depends on the particulars. Fishing from shore isn't much different than fishing from a boat. I do a lot of both, and don't really do many different things.
  12. Where do I begin? I recall not too long ago Suffolk and Nassau counties had decent schools...
  13. I on the other hand AM bashing, disrespecting, and offending anyone who thinks keeping a fish out of the water for anything other that a couple of minutes is reasonable. There are several variables involved, but not many fish will survive long term when kept out that long.
  14. "Loose lips..." GO NAVY, BEAT ARMY!
  15. You realize that all this is happening between your ears right? There is no conflict between improving both what you are good at, and what you are not good at (as you perceive it).
  16. This ^. On water I'm familiar with, I will bring one 3600 (not nearly filled) and a few packs of plastics. On recon missions to unfamiliar places, I'll stuff it a bit more, or sometimes go to 2 boxes. Anything more just slows me down.
  17. Anything and everything. No plastic is safe...
  18. They catch a lot of fish. I wire the skirts on. The 1/2 oz have to be used with chunks, you can't thread a trailer on it.
  19. Because its more difficult to travel with or ship rods (and they cost less)...
  20. Middletown Composites is where you want to send your resume...
  21. If I'm tying a hook or swivel, a palomar, if I'm tying a large lure, a uni. I just dragged a tree (yes a tree, not a branch) across the lake with 65 PP and a uni (good hooks on that frog)...
  22. Awesome. You should work for a Government contractor..
  23. I wish someone could invent and electronic device that would interpret sonar echos into visual images on a color screen, but I guess that's asking too much. Now a virtual electronic library where all sorts of misinformation abounded, well that would be catastrophic...
