  1. As long as there are Ricos and overhangs, I'll keep my 6' to 6'6" rods. Check the manufacturer's literature. They are being made, but longer is trendy right now, so retailers will devote more floor space (and the Interweb equivalent) to them. I'm 5'8" so other than flipping, I hardly ever use a rod longer than 7' for bass. I do own a 13' surf rod though.
  2. why are most baitcasting reels L. handed? For the same reason everyone has 2 unicorns in their garage...
  3. There is no one good answer. Imagine someone asked for a dedicated LMB outfit. M/L spinning with 6 lb test to 65 lb braid on a flipping stick or something for an A-rig or frog would all be legitimate, if misleading answers. Now add the fact that stripers will range from LMB sized fish to cows over 50 lbs, and it makes tackle selection that much more varied. That being said, depending on how, where and when one chases them, can narrow rod/reel selection considerably. A flipping stick (older IM6 or IM7) with a 5500-6500 or a Calcutta will work in open water for casting or jiggging lures quite well. As someone mentioned above, a more substantial conventional outfit for chunking or live baiting, and a light offshore trolling outfit for inshore trolling will work well. Musky tackle, as well as dedicated salt water stuff goes without saying. Match the outfit to the size/weight of the lure, and step up if fishing around rocks, wrecks, piling or other structure that will require horsing fish in to keep them from cutting you off on sharp objects.
  4. No favorite, I throw about 6 different ones. Depends on what the fish want. the differences I find important are loudness, fall rate, attitude, and size. Also some are better for burning, others for ripping, and others for yoyoing. Be the vibe.
  5. What Do You Want To Try Next Season Twin Brazilian blonde beach volleyball players...
  6. water temp, line diameter, and wind will affect a JBs performance, so yes I fine tune quite a bit. Sometimes a slight sink or slight float is preferable to perfect suspending (assuming there is such a thing).
  7. The hook needs to be sharp, the weight needs to be right, the wire needs to hold up, but really,... It's all about the blade, about the blade, no trouble... I change the blades out on most spinnerbaits depending on what I'm doing . When it's right, it's like they have to bite it. I would be happy to fish nothing but spinnerbaits, and wake baits, and jerk bats, and frogs, and, never mind .
  8. You know they live to almost 30, right. My guess is they are swimming in, not being put there, but anything is possible.
  9. Condom, and feminine wash is what came to mind, but I'm in sporting goods retailing, so I may be bit biased...
  10. Fish get conditioned to sounds and vibrations, as well as other factors. If there is consistent noise from boat traffic, bridges, etc, the fish will ignore it. Drop it on fish used to being undisturbed in a remote body of water, and they will move or shut down. I've got a local spot where military jets and Helos zip around at low altitudes, even disturbing the water surface, and the bite isn't affected. I also fish a spot where I have to sneak up on these things, so put me on the depends column.
  11. Snoopy baitcasters, Holiday popcorn, soft goods (that's clothing) etc, makes the money, lucky craft, Jackal and Loomis is what we call in the industry "window dressing". repeat after me: "The enthusiast is not your customer"...
  12. Read up on flutter spoons and tie a lipless where it says to use a spoon...
  13. It sounds like you are having issues with the shape/size of the reel seat. There are a number of mods that can be made ranging from wrapping with tennis/athletic tape to dremeling the trigger to a custom handle. The size/shape of the reel also come into play depending on how you grip the rod. Lastly taping fingers works wonders for some. I throw jerkbaits on both spinning and BCs, a good way to give one hand/arm a rest when fishing a lot. KISS, identify the problem and solve it (and then come up with a technique name for it)...
  14. The 1000 size reel will be fine for braid or mono up to 8 lb test. Its not about wether it can handle big fish, it can. I've landed 20-30 lb stripers with one. Its about the spool diameter as it relates to the line diameter. I like to cast jerkbaits on 10 to 12 lb mono, and a tiny spool won't like that.
  15. I'm in the mad at Timmy Horton camp on this one. I hardly fish any baits without mods, sometimes its a little thing, and sometimes its FrankenBait time.
  16. That old Mann's spinnerbait has been recalled. Send all of yours to me, and I'll make sure they are disposed of properly...
  17. ^THIS. I'll just add knot strength to the equation. I started surf fishing at night from the surf with a 20+ wind in your face, and learned how to detect bucktail bites with mono, so this LMB thing is easy. I will say that flouro does transmit more information, but that's cause its stiffer. I like Catt, am not willing to give up the dependability of a good salt water mono, and catch lots of fish. But to each his own.

  19. X2. I fish other lures with the stopper a few inches ahead, fish don't seem to mind, and if I fish a red one I read fish are attracted to red, or is it they can't see it...
  20. No, you are right, technique specific exists only between the ears of LMB anglers (and rod catalogs of course)...
  21. As long as the biggest hacks keep buying the "best" equipment, its all good... Cha Ching.
  22. Yes, use a red filter.
  23. Thinner line will have more stretch all else being equal.
