  1. What? No one here ever bought a Carrot Stik? I remember seeing them at a show when they first came out, and the guy at the booth was all like "it won't break because of our proprietary cellular structure and progressive action which distributes..." snap! Wish I had video of that.
  2. Try the Hopkins shorty, now I gotta kill ya...
  3. My secret weapon lures are, what's the word? Ah, yes, secret... Oh, and MY SF86 is properly filled out...
  4. You can use heavier mono and keep the rod tip hi to keep the bait from diving, also you can bend the line tie down, and finally you can bend the lip down some. I just got a couple of discontinued Mannn's wakers in bluegill, just like what you describe.
  5. Yes, I've read that in several places, but it makes no sense. The physics don't add up.
  6. x2. I commercial and tournament fish for $, I mostly fun fish with one rod and a handful of lures, can't mix the 2.
  7. Everything. Love this time of year.
  8. This ^. A casual angler probably doesn't have the skill or patience to properly fish a finesse soft plastic (neither do I when I think about it). What I do is usually target open(ish) water fish with small spinnerbaits, squarebills, jerkbaits or a t-rigged power worm. The trick is to find some fish. Usually, a couple will do for said angler.
  9. There are several reasons. Sure there is the technical, objective difference of the added costs of more advanced materials, closer tolerances, etc. But the marketing realities are really the reason. The car analogy isn't a bad one. You create your flagship product to both appeal and sell to those who must have the "best" as well as to create a demand for product down the line. Stella sells Sustains, Sustains sell Stradics, Stradics sell the products down the line. An $800 reel makes a $400 reel seem like a bargain.
  10. shhhhh... I'm sure there is some JDM plopper jet spy thingy that's much better...
  11. I don't chase trout much, but I have seen 3 lb small mouth in the stomachs of lakers.
  12. Sorry to hear of your grandfather's passing. The reel is indeed an automatic fly reel. You should be able to narrow the manufacturing date from the markings, looks like 60s-70s, could be a bit older. The snell hook pack was (and is) very popular in NY and NJ. They are snapper (baby bluefish) hooks. Kids (and adults) would fish spearing or killiefish on a bobber with a light rod or bamboo pole, mostly from docks and bulkheads, kind of the saltwater sunfish equivalent. The boxed hooks may have been purchased for the same purpose, that size was also used for winter flounder back then. Brings back memories.
  13. As long as the content isn't expressly misrepresented, I don't have an issue with creative editing. You don't think Marlon Perkins actually outran a rhino? (someone explain it to the young guys). I used to watch one of Larry Dahlberg's shows just for the horrible reel drag and fish splash dubs, much like an old karate movie.
  14. It's HUGE! Believe me!
  15. "My little fish is bigger than your little fish" LMAO.
  16. I love to have a section of water to myself, but everyone else has a right to fish it. I'll often choose where I'll fish based on that, which is why rainy overcast Wednesdays is one of my favorite times. Big fish seem to forget that they are supposed to be smarter on hump day...
  17. I don't have a specific make/model recommendation for you (and others in the same boat) but will concur with walking or cross training shoes (sneakers) as usually being the most "comfortable" for fishing (essentially standing around for a long period of time) In a previous life I was an athletic footware buyer. As shoes have become more and more specialized, some make for poor choices for certain endevors, in extreme cases they can cause extreme discomfort or even injury. That being said, what works for one person may not for another for various reasons. Also one's age and physical conditioning (or rather lack of) can be a big factor. For those who sandals work for, that's a very good option, but most won't offer much support or cushioning. What should be avoided by most is a shoe that raises the heel above the fore foot, or binds or pinches anywhere. In short (too late) It's a personal decision with quite a bit of preference involved, Oh, and after a year long deployment to Africa, my favorite "fishing shoes" are a well broken in pair of combat boots, or Reef smoothie sandals, so go figure.
  18. No, after the armageddon, we wouldn't have to worry about InterWeb® experts, so we'd rebuild with 14 lb Ande Tournament green, cause then there'd be enough for everyone, and we'd make everyone start in the salt before chasing green landlocked little fish, and peace and harmony would reign ever after.
  19. Yeah, I always have a couple in the box. Can fish it a bunch of ways, but it seems every time I rip it out of grass something jumps on it.
  20. I threw it for a couple of hours, did not care for it.
  21. This ^. I like a different square bill in late winter/early spring, than I do in warmer water, and again something different in the fall. In addition to the action, bouyancy and size often determine what I'm throwing.
  22. You can troll Alabama rigs? Who knew!
