  1. I'm gonna try that. Do I put JJ Magic or honey mustard on it?
  2. Yeah, but that is everywhere in all mediums, from the early "soap" operas to NASCAR, and everything in between. The $ has to come from somewhere.
  3. There are so many variables, its hard to say. The actual taper of the line in combination with the rod taper/action, fly size/air resistance and angler technique will all influence the outcome. In general terms, usually its a better idea to step up 1 line size than to go down one, but there is only one way to find out. On a positive note, it sounds like an opportunity to go get yourself some WF 6 line AND an 8'6" 5 wt rod...
  4. let me know if you need crabs...
  5. I "borrow" my wife's Compre 5'9"/stradic 2000 a lot. I gave it to her for Xmas quite a while ago. Good stick, but.....
  6. No, They are providing a medium and exposure for no or low cost, how much is that worth?
  7. I find that the rods I use for JBs when I'm not tournament fishing work well when I'm tournament fishing JBs, but maybe it's just me.
  8. Rod length=(Yak length+ Yak beam)/2.2
  9. Scotty trolling release clip. What are you doing?
  10. When I'm bank fishing, I'm moving around a lot, I usually only bring 1 or 2 rods. Less IS more.
  11. Faster rotation in relation to what? The only difference is that the knob you are holding travels a slightly larger diameter with a longer handle. So you have more torque (less effort required) per turn all else being equal.
  12. More legit than the 30 year old "unboxing" his monthly tackle delivery with a box of tissues and a bottle of lotion in the background...
  13. In addition to rigging, baiting, setting lines, and gaffing (I let the fighting of 200-400 lb fish to younger guys) My job is to read the tournament rules and extract any advantage in the text. "limited to" says to me that's all that is allowed, but it is vague. We also got a guy who can say "I was born in Mars 300 years ago and came to this planet via time travel machine" and the polygraph needles barely move. It's about putting the right team together.
  14. It's a medium where anyone with a camera and too much time can just upload content, so yeah, statistically most will have little or no clue and an agenda, financial, emotional, or otherwise. Nothing wrong with that of course, it's entertaining (sometimes) to those who know better. Unfortunately it's the true novice who will either absorb and apply bad information, and/or have their head spinning.
  15. That better not be a blackfish jig, There is only one reason, (the reel one)...
  16. If you're not cheating, you're not trying.
  17. Yes, but if you are deep cranking large lures for long periods, it might be a tad fast. I have a couple of 4.7:1 and 5.3:1 reels that I use for cranking, slow rolling, and when I really want to slow myself down.
  18. First, NEVER take striped bass (rockfish actually) fishing advise from anyone from MD. Second, striper tackle is going to vary widely depending on where and how you are fishing for them. You might be fishing in 3 feet of water for ones only slightly larger than LMBs, or you can be fishing for 30, 40 or even 50 lb fish in a 2 knot current. You mention fishing for them in fresh water and possibly using the same tackle for musky. A 4000 size spinning reel with a 7' MH rod will do the trick. You can also do something similar with baitcasting and maybe 40-50 lb braid. Give us some specifics and we can narrow it if you'd like.
  19. I have settled in a window from 6" to 2 feet as being the most important. Anything less than that I go with brighter, louder, larger lure. Anything more I go for more natural, match the forage baits. In the window I'll experiment a tad more. Than being said, I have caught fish in gin clear water with a chart. crank and some in 0 vis with a weightless t-rigged watermelon trick worm (on the fall no less). So always let the fish decide.
  20. Use a big hook, I like the octopus type, but anything with a big gap will work. Hook the sunny in the mouth and out a nostril if you want it to stay shallow, hook it just behind the dorsal fin if you want it to go deeper. When he sees a predator, he will try to get away, we call that "getting nervous". You will feel a thump followed by a run, or just a thump, and it will just sit there. If its a big fish he'll have it almost right away, a smaller one will turn it and swallow it. Rell down, and hit it hard.
  21. I once drove 1/2 hour to a local lake, opened the hatch as usual, and no rods! Shook my head and laughed out loud.
  22. I think that as long as the playing field is level, the rules won't have much effect on the outcome, with the possible exception of potential coincidental advantage that lines up the conditions, bait and angler strength to an individual. We are fairly successful salt water tournament anglers, and while most are biggest fish wins, sometimes its biggest 3, slot, keep alive, or some other criteria. That is where knowledge, experience, confidence, and execution all come into play. Showing up in a fully wrapped 33 foot Center Console with triple outboards and matching gold reels does not contribute to catching fish (it will get you there in a hurry though)
  23. x2. I throw it on 65, but I don't throw frogs in light cover.
  24. I have one of DSG's older 7' MH house brand rods (Quest I think) Its hands down my favorite frog rod (It's that time!) great larger spinnerbait, chatter, lipless and buzzbait rod. It also does ok with pitching and jigs, although I have others that I prefer for that. I get crazy looks when I take it to live line striped bass and cut the frog off and tie a live bait hook. Good stick.
