  1. I fish frogs where there are pickerel and snakeheads, straight braid causes a lot of lost frogs, I find a trace ( a foot or two) of 20-40 lb Big Game or Ande prevents all but the occasional (like one every 2 years or so) bite off. Wire causes the nose to dip and the frog to act unnatural. To the OP, Sounds like the bass wasn't hooked, he was just holding the perch. In those cases, keeping even pressure and not breaking the surface is the way to go, even then its 50-50. The loose drag thing, don't do that.
  2. If you have the lighter methods, you won't do better than that for trout and finesse. The Ardito is a great travel rod for bass and inshore work.
  3. I'm in the color doesn't matter camp, but will be the first to admit that when it matters, it matters a lot. Clear (like really clear) water, and when fish are keyed on a particular forage (or worse the combination of the two) is when I get particular about color, if there are no clouds or wind (like last week in the Saint Lawrence), then it makes it even more so, but as a general rule, I'm either throwing bright, dull, or forage, with no specific one color in mind.
  4. Had a great time, and the area is stunning. Wife loved it, so mission accomplished. Fishing was not great, but I figured a few things out. Caught smalllies, pike and LMBs. Now I need technique names for drop shotting night crawlers and using live gobies as swim jig trailers... I have to commercial fish hard for the next few weeks, then I'm off to El Salto and Mazatlan.
  5. [Response deleted due to fear of another Mod time out] How do I change my board name to Stepford wife angler?...
  6. Thanks guys. Good insights. It's a couple vacation/fishing trip, and the wife is strictly no fish no pay, so I'm feeling the pressure...
  7. Heading up to Thousand Islands in mid September and looking for a little advise on the fishing, as well as recommendations on guides and places to rent a boat. Thanks in advance for any help. Oh, is putine any good? I might take a day trip into Canada, ey?
  8. Are you asking about brand/model? Or specific individual lures that are "better" than supposedly identical ones? But in either case, yes, and yes.
  9. I know it doesn't seem to make sense, but they are spawning (or at least think they are). I see this regularly in ponds and small lakes in this general area. I have a theory, but who knows.
  10. They all catch fish, and most catch fishermen. The trick is to find a couple that work for you. You can become nurse Rachett's favorite patient if you read through all the nonsense on the InterWeb®. If you are fishing in the Carolinas, I'd go with a couple of H2Os if you like Kias, and a few Jackall Askas if Lexus is more your speed (KVD 1.5s are like pickups). For deeper work, Fat Free Shads have been good to me in Moultrie and Gaston.
  11. Did he also say you can't go swimming?
  12. I'm about 80% also. Some days you get most, and others they are just nosing it though and you miss a bunch, that's just part of frogging. I don't really like fishing frogs, but sometimes it's the best or only choice. I seldom fish it in open or water or light cover, too many other better bait choices.
  13. I'll wait for the plopper/bat combo...
  14. I'm thinking they brought back samples from ICast and a bat flew into the server....
  15. Either will work fine. 50 will cast a bit further and cut pads and tules better, but I fish a couple of spots with big fish and crazy thick mats, and usually I have to set the hook, get the fish coming until its completely buried in it, and then just point the rod and walk backwards. I've broken 50 doing this so I go with the 65. I once had to remove probably 30 lbs of grass to find out if I still had a fish, I did, and it was a good one.
  16. Add a click or two to the brakes and smooth out the cast a tad and you should be fine. What is probably happening is the lure is decelerating mid cast, as a heavier buzzbait or spinnerbait with large blades often do. Doesn't sound like its digging in, but you could walk off the line and reel it back in to be sure. Another thing that sometimes affects casting with braid is it drying out after fishing in "goopie" water, and not using for a while.
  17. No shot. The Olympic organizers are all about the $$$, and there is just not enough of it (or global appeal) in bass fishing.
  18. My first impression of the bat was "who the F&(% would buy that?!" But then it dawned on me that 36% of the population has lost their minds... One one thousand, two one thousand...
  19. We do quite a few of these. Unless it is a requirement, go with spinning gear instead of BCs. The uni and palomar are 2 of the easiest knots to tie, so that's a good way to go. Keep it short and sweet, specially for the younger ones. If they aren't actually fishing remove (or clip the points) from trebles.
  20. DEPENDS ON THE TIME OF YEAR AND WHERE i'M FISHING, BUT THESE: SUPER SPOT SUGAR SHAD RES ORIGINAL TRAP
  21. Oh yeah, in open water anything from a Hopkins, Crock, Kastmaster, Cleo, Dardevle or something similar. You can either slow roll them with a subtle speed up/slow down, (the trick here is to pull it as fast as possible while wobbling, NOT spinning, not as easy as it sounds, one reason they aren't more popular) or jig them vertically, what ya'll call "flutter", the trick here is to lift it smartly, and then follow the spoon down on the slightest of slack, varying the size of the lift depending on what they want. We fish for a lot of salt water fish this way, so its second nature.
  22. The bat! The bat is famous!.... Or that hollow body that can double as a rubber duckie in the tub. Ya'll kill me...
  23. If you shop around you can get a Black Max and Veritas for a little over $100. There are other options which offer good value and adequate performance. I know its easy to get the idea (not on this site of course ) that it would be nearly impossible to catch bass with anything other than an $800 oufit, but that's just not the case.
  24. If you are going to troll between spots, just put out what you have tied on. If you are really going to troll. a crank, JB, or plastic paddle or curly tail on a jighead or swim jig will get bit. It really depends how much stuff (mostly grass and such) there is to hang you up which determines what would be best, or a spoonplug....
  25. Use the dropshot rod. Use a long leader, and resist the urge to move the bait too much. Better yet spool with something other than braid. YMMV (but it won't)
