I think when fishing artificial lures, often fish don't strike at them because they perceive them to be food. Sure there ar some exceptions with certain baits and presentations, but more times than not they are responding to instinctual reflexes. Much like a cat chasing a toy or laser pointer, they can't help themselves. Of course there are times when the cat just wants to curl up and be left alone, and will show no interest.
I think you're on to something, just add some Donna Summer, and maybe chicken wings, and some bowling shoes, and screaming kids, and....hard for the money, so hard for it honey, so you'd better treat her right!...
On the boat. I'll have maybe a dozen rods, but try to keep the ones on deck to a minimum, usually 3-6. From shore it's 1 rod 99% of the time, and a max of 2, unless I'm hitting places where I won't be moving around, which is almost never.
The rod and line much more important than reel IMNSHO. Anything with a 6-7:1 (or any of the silly fast ones around) will work. A fairly crisp 7' MH fast rod and 15lb mono or 30-40 lb braid is a good place to start.
If you spool up at near the speed of light, you'll be able to fit an infinite length of any diameter line you'd like, just don't try it with flourocarbon...
Sounds a lot like you are suggesting real world experience. Try stuff and see what works and what doesn't? Stop with that silly talk...

They are fairly stable, but will roll if you jerk them too hard or pull them too fast. I mod them by shortening the wire about 1/4-3/8" and going single blade. You can also wrap some solder on the hook shank, if you want to run it faster or deeper.
I use the little ties that come in bread loafs and other things. one on either side hold the strands well and are reusable. Just take 3 or four wraps, remove band, and then finish wrapping and a couple of half hitches.
