  1. Friday or Saturday depending on what time the storm is supposed to roll through, but that's a good week in my book, I'll take any of those days.
  2. Oh good, I'm not the only one who balls up peanut butter on a small treble, bologna works for cats...
  3. There is no wrong way to fish a JB. While I like some JBs for certain situations, I think all (most) will catch fish if given the right action and cadence. I like to "learn" a JB by watching it in a pool or clear water so I can get a picture of what my input is doing and comparing it to known ones, besides that what the bait does at rest and how well it casts are the other important factors. Like most other things it comes down to confidence. The last thing I'll mention is that I find a bunch of folks have trouble buying into the "Just do this and the fish will be there, either on the next jerk or the pause" thing, once I get someone to accept this, its usually on to the next lesson.
  4. Yes a compass will work, or pull it up on line, up is North, down is South, left is West, right is East. Its also a good way to figure out what the wind is doing on an unfamiliar spot (winds are labeled per their direction of origin) Oh, and I don't know if it holds up further south, but here, one cold day may make them a bit lethargic (not always) but usually they don't move around much, I find that they tend to hug the bottom, and won't be as willing to chase a bait up. YMMV.
  5. I'm in the Navy, but I'm with the Corps on "no man left behind" I fish square bills on 15 lb (sometimes 20) Big Game and a palomar, and after a quick hook bend they go right back to the mission. Spinnerbait outfished squarebill and JB yesterday for the first time this year (in the snow).
  6. And a picture of Big Foot and the Lochness monster too please...
  7. 50º IS the magic number, but you have to sprinkle it with pixy dust and crushed unicorn horn powder while chanting "celcius shucks!" to activate it.
  8. Nope, not doing it. Check back with me in January.
  9. Of course it does monkey butt, don't be a bone head or I'll pound you until you are black and blue.
  10. No doubt, The characteristics of a line will have an effect on the lure, and it can be the difference between catching and not catching based on several factors, but that's a different (and important) discussion.
  11. In my experience LMB are not line shy in the least.
  12. Agreed. I always start with the shortest, softest, and slowest rod That works well for a particular application, and work my way up if need be. It seems most folks do the opposite.
  13. Another classic that has gone by the wayside. I like fishing one with a light sinker t-rigged. Either snake it though cover, specially standing grass and pads, or slowly drag it along the bottom. When I'm teaching someone to fish plastics, I break out some power worms and they rarely disappoint.
  14. So a few drops of liquid Dawn in the JJ magic?....
  15. frogs too sometimes.
  16. I've tried pretty much every buzzbait out there, including the one with the halo and the heavenly light beam shinning down on it that everyone loves here, and I keep going back to the Strike King. I make a few mods on them, and they catch fish and hold up well.
  17. a short leader makes sense if you don't want to wind it through the guides and you aren't changing lures much (or using a snap). I don't use fluoro, but will use a short mono leader when fishing treble lures with braid (which I don't do often) but sometimes I'm out with one rod. I hate the braid catching on the treble hooks, and I need protection from snakehead, pike and pickerel teeth. 20/40 is a good combination, normally I'm either matching diameters or LB tests, or something close to it depending on what I'm doing.
  18. I haven't noticed any issues with keeping fish buttoned on chatterbaits, I have noticed that a lot of pros do plead with bass to "stay on" or beg them to "not come off". I think it probably has more to do with the situation than the bait. I guess someone could ask them, and then we'll know.
  19. I'm sure advertising and marketing has a lot to do with it, as well as human nature. Coming from a commercial background, find the fish always comes before catch the fish or there's no $$$, I just apply the same approach to my bass fishing minus the coolers, totes, and ice.
  20. My 2 Abu 2 speed paper weights are by far the worst BC reels I've owned
  21. 3 baits? All you need is a Whopper Plopper! The question is one 90, one 110, and one 130? or one size in 3 colors?
  22. I think that if someone makes/sells a product for a particular price and some folks are willing to buy it at that price, then it's all good. Personally, I wouldn't buy or use one, but that's just cause there are similar things just as effective to be had from other segments of fishing. If a $100 (or more expensive) lure produced better and had no substitute, I might indulge.
  23. Same here. Except for the short period where the water froze, it's been consistently good fishing, and the cold spring extended it out for sure. Usually, the spawn sends the big ones into a funk, and then they go deeper. Some of the best advice I got from an old timer (speaking of the salt, but it applies to all fishing) is "every year is different, fish the fish, don't wish the fish"
