  1. If you want to cast light lures and unweighted plastics a longer distance, then as it appears you already know, it will require a lighter action rod. As far as the trajectory of the cast, you are in complete control of that. If you don't want the lure to go up high, then don't cast it up high.
  2. I fish a lot of old lures, I also fish a lot of new lures. I don't break down my tackle by age.
  3. You got me, that's what I meant, or maybe I was thinking of barramundi...
  4. Shhhhhhhhhhh... Best night time calm water lure period.
  5. A large bobber under a large shiner is money. I use poppers as bobbers with a small plastic or fly a foot or two behind. I also use a beefed up version of a crappie rig to drag and drop small baits sometimes.
  6. Heavy mono, mostly Ande and BG.
  7. A lot of folks think of catfish as scavengers or scent feeders. While most cats will not turn down a meal that shows up on the bottom, certain species, particularly blues and channels in our waters are nocturnal hunters, that will chase live bait. Some of the best cat fishermen I know use live bluegills and shad as bait. I once had a pet catfish that terrorized a bass about the same size in a tank. In and around the Potomac blue cats hit bass baits on a regular basis.
  8. Put me in this camp. In all the times I've been on the water, I've only seen bass cruising with fins out of the water a handful of times, and never in muddy water. Fish look very different in the water, and its easy to misidentify them, even in clear water and good light. Which is not to say that there aren't times when there is a good bite in a foot of water, I've certainly seen that plenty.
  9. I inserted some goof remarks about it in several threads right after the last ICAST..
  10. The crabs and lobsters up here too. I think its the effects of too much methane in the atmosphere...
  11. It works out that way in most cases, but not actually the case. A tax levied on a business, as you state is a cost of doing business. Sales tax is levied on the consumer, not the retailer. The retailer in most places is burdened with the requirement to collect and remit sales tax collected to the appropriate agency. We cut a check to the gov for $100-150K every quarter, and if it's late we are liable for interest and fees.
  12. It isn't uncommon in sporting goods for smaller accounts to be serviced mostly or exclusively by distributors, independent sales reps, or other middle men. In some cases and with some manufacturers and brands, it's the only way they do business. Large national or international accounts sometimes have dedicated in house or external agents. I don't wish sporting goods retailing on my worst enemy.
  13. Most sellers list the dimensions of blades. Also, it's ok to upsize or downsize a blade. Here in the mid atlantic and northeast, I end up downsizing most of the time, further south, I tend to upsize. YMMV (but it won't)
  14. No, the cost is offset by the steel tariffs on the split rings, hooks and rattles....
  15. All my jigheads are black or brown, unless I get a really good deal on another color. Fish don't care.
  16. I like a 1000-2000 for braid, 2000-3000 for mono, but how it balances with the rod(s) I use a spinning reel with is usually how I pair them up.
  17. Retailers don't "charge" sales tax, they collect it. While state and municipal laws vary, most retail sales are subject to sales tax. The fact that they haven't been collected or reported in the past does not change that. The free ride is coming to and end, as it had to eventually.
  18. SK 1.5 and h2o are two very good cranks, but they vary in profile and action. Based on where and when I'm fishing, I'll go with one over the other, hence I don't rank them one better than the other. I will say that for the money, the Academy baits ar among the best bang for the buck, and some of the most consistent out of the package lures period in terms of action/QA, they are hand painted, so they do vary in color/pattern somewhat, I find this a plus, some may not. There are maybe a dozen or so cranks that I have a lot of confidence in, but in truth, if you get around active fish, they ar going to bite a crank most of the time. Now for the guy that asked about frog vs crank on another thread, that's just silliness...
  19. Picture of the brake shoes please. There are two versions of that reel. The older ones use the same spools as some contemporary Pinnacles and OEM rebranded models. You can get one on EBay easy. just make sure it's a left handed spool...
  20. Haven't fished Central Park in a while, but I always found row boat lake better than the meer. The reservoir is loaded with fish, but don't even think about it unless you are into handcuffs. I would advise against lecturing folks too much in NYC, at best you'll be ignored or growled at. There are at least a dozen places in NYC with bass, and several more just outside the city limits. FURGITABOUTIT!
  21. The kite idea will work, or you can drag it behind a boat. A salt water conventional or fly reel will work too, unspool it from the side with the drag loose, not off the bail.
  22. I am a lucky guy, my wife's take on tackle is "Do I have enough watermelon candy and red shad trick worms?" I've been known to "borrow" them without permission, but that's a different conversation.
  23. Tonic and coconut water? Now we're talking, make mine a double.
